Why does "The Island of my Dreams" look exactly like everyone elses?

I can't say I'm surprised. It was obvious that the prcie for everyone getting their own island is highly limited customization. Despite what some copium-huffers here say, Square isn't giving everyone 600 freely customizable slots for stuff. Some simply fail to admit that a feature limited to a predetermined number of players will always be more complex than the one available to absolutely everyone.

But it does seem a touch more limited than I expected. I remember dyes being mentioned? Which doesn't seem to be the case. And a couple more "hooks" for a small variety of random decorations within the hideaway would have helped.

Personally i would like to give the benifit of the doubt that more options will come down the road. They have already said that they plant to continue to add to the island content so lets see where it leads.

The dyes and a few other items evidently get added to the vendors after completing the rank 10 quest.

I know that one to, it was nothing groundbreaking but 10 times better than what we got. The buildings had meaning and could add something usefull for the main game. Also i liked the mission board a lot, i would say it was even a bit better than our retainers.

I think that was the point, though. The garrison was intended to be a central element to the plot (and I agree, I enjoyed the mission board back then). Island Sanctuary specifically isn't supposed to be plot-essential. It's entire purpose is to be side content like the Gold Saucer that you can do at your leisure while waiting for queues, chatting with your FC or LS, etc.. I wouldn't expect it to be of the same level of involvement as something that drives the entire plot.

The garrison's attachment to the plot is inconsequential for the purposes of this conversation. Even without it, the garrison had far more personality, you actually had cool decoration options, and there was more to actually do. Actual size notwithstanding, the garrison had more depth and character than the mammet factory we got stuck with.

It would be a good idea not to laud garrisons, as WOD's net effect was to wipe out more than 50% of the bloody playerbase in FOUR MONTHS.

Garrisons were fine, not as if there was anything else to do.

WOD was in every sense of the word an absolute disaster, a gigantic screwup, add to that Mr "Cube crawl" Afriasabi's war on flight that lost them ANOTHER one million players, and you have the textbook definition of abject failure.

Even with the current system they could have made more effort in some cosmetic customizations.

For the workshops, have different types you can select. One is the current mill, another would be a kitchen, a smithy, a furniture workshop, alchemist lab and so on.
Then for the granaries it could be a storehouse/barn, or a toolshed with mining or woodcutter tools.

For landmarks, have a personal house around the size of a single plan small house. Give us 3-4 versions of it with different layouts of furnitures and design.
For current landmarks, give us versions. Instead of a bathhouse that seems to draw more from SHB dwarf style, let me have one in a Sharlyan or Lominsan style.

This could make for more varied islands while still using the current system.

Garrisons also sucked at WoD launch. A lot of that garrison specific content didn't get added until 6.1 and it was hastily slapped in trying to control the subscription bleed. A few other things didn't get added until 6.2 (like the shipyard and the holiday decorations you thought to mention earlier).

Remove all the content related to player progression from garrisons and you end up with what's basically a miniature Island Sanctuary. Garrisons did have more building choices but that's because most of those buildings had specific purposes in player progression.

Mission table? Analogous to the Sanctuary workshop. Both had primarily economic purposes, though the mission table was also mandatory for player progression on the Legendary ring and provided raid gear.

Garrisons had just a small mine and tiny herb garden to gather from. Sanctuary has an entire island with the nodes spread out.

We get to let minions wander around various areas of the Sanctuary once we upgrade the cozy cabin for the first time (that was probably the first or second day for most of us). To have your companion pets wander around your garrison, you first had to level the garrison to Rank 3 (took months) and then you had to choose to build the Pet Menagerie and level it to Rank 2 (honestly can't remember at this point how long that took but I'm pretty sure it was at least 2 weeks).

We know more content will be getting added to Island Sanctuary over the course of this expansion. Seems like SE should be given the chance to add more content to Island Sanctuary over the next couple of patches before it gets compared to Garrisons that also had a couple of patches to flesh out what they had.

This definitely feels like more content that’s just going to be released then ignored and left to die, like chocobo companions, squadrons, diadem, FC airships/subs. It’ll probably last me about 2 months to slow farm cowries for all the minions etc. then my animals will be left to starve, my crops will die and the mammets will all rust.

I had a suspicion that since we could raise animals this would have some connection to beastmaster when it released which would probably have given it something to keep it alive for the foreseeable future. But the animal raising is so shallow and the big nail in that coffin was that to unlock island sanctuary you need to get to an endwalker area (something they wouldn’t require for job related content).

So people have a reason to be skeptical on how quickly Island Sanctuary will get updated.

6.3 needs to see some pretty significantly improvements and not simply a few extra landmarks and another Odder Fountain equivalent. Otherwise, we're looking at a repeat of Blue Mage imo.

Really hope that this was more of a test whether players will like it or not, because it seems like there really isn't anything to do once you get rank 10 and catch best animals. If you bought everything, you can't do much more with cowries other than exchange them for dyes/materia at terrible rate. So you just spend it on automatic pasture and cropland and visit island for 10 minutes once a week. Only active part of gameplay at that point is gathering over and over again, but there isn't even incentive to do that, because you need to gather 291/582 nodes for single IX/X materia, which are currently worth 10-15k at most. Unless they make more involved activities that have some replay value, this content will start to rot just like Doman Enclave.

Their idea of a "Sanctuary" is a factory. The WoL surely must see managing a large scale production and export of goods as vacation time!
Then again the team also considers going into (6.1 and 6.2 MSQ spoilers)
