Pft, I don't even respect the bible that is the Bible.
Just the story? People act like this games the Holy Grail lol.
What I don't understand is why people that don't enjoy the story throw it in the face of everyone they see as if it is a badge of honor. I DO NOT CARE IF YOU DO NOT LIKE THE STORY. Person comes into a story focused game to bash what the game is based on. Seems like a brilliant plan. What type of response did you expect. If you don't like it keep it to yourself.
Although my response stands I just realized who the resident troll is that packaged this. Don't people have better things to do with their time?
That's the whole point of this troll thread.
As much as titanmen is trolling, you need to realize he has a point: People should NOT get worked up if someone else didnt like the story.
Problem lies that some people have some strange emotional attachment to the story, to the point that any criticism of the game is taken personally.
I thought Endwalker sucked because a big portion of it undid what I felt made the end of ShB so great.
Not many people have dogpiled me over it, and most who ask can see where my opinion comes from even if they don't agree.
I mostly see dogpiling when you're negative about the game.
I think people are more inclined to get upset at people wanting to minimize the effect the story has on the game itself over peoples opinions on the story.
2 of my best friends in game I've known since 2.2 have skipped the story in its entirety. It doesn't bother me beyond feeling like they are missing out, but I don't disparage their decisions. They had a kid at the time and didn't feel they could devote enough time to paying attention and then just never bothered after they didn't have a baby in their arms healing coil lol.
Alisaie may have thought of him as a little b*tch but his sacrifice was not in vain, for we of the Holy Church of Vator Galvus will always thank him for his glorious sacrifice so we may live. And in honour of his memory, we have painstakingly recreated a replica of his glorious cheeks from the bygone days of Stormblood and mounted it onto our church's wall, so everyone may bask in his cheeks former glory~
Even though I have a physical revulsion to people saying they don't like the story, I totally understand why. To be honest I have a hard time doing older story stuff because of how long it takes to get where it is, and I know there are many other valid reasons people don't enjoy it. At the end of the day it is a video game and everyone has their own reasons for enjoying it. They're playing the game, right? So what's it matter why they are playing it if they are having fun?
You're partially right... But some of the valid dogpiling i've seen in both forums and noobnetwork, have been about people talking shit about the story, saying it makes no sense, when they straight up skipped it and cant connect the dots/fill up the blanks.
I'll tell you why: Because their friends are playing it and it looks good but they dont want to do 200 hours of content before reaching their friends and play alongside them, so they either skip cutscenes or buy a story skip and still skip cs, just to catch up. After all, you can watch the MSQ in youtube and call it a day.
"You just don't understand it." is one of the most commonly used and lazy counterarguments for people finding valid reasons to dislike something that is largely popular in general.
However, it is genuinely silly how many content creators were attempting to ride the Shadowbringers and Endwalker hype and tried to make valid reviews/critiques of their stories in a void after skipping everything prior when that just...doesn't work.
9 out of 10 times it's because people are just being shitty about it.
There is a difference between saying that you didn't enjoy something and with insinuating or outright saying that the writers are idiots and that it's the most horrible thing that has ever been created.
A lot of the time people are just going out of their way to get really hung up on small things too and are critical to a point they aren't with anything else.
A lot of it just comes across like people wanting to hate it and is very personally directed against the devs.
I think quite a lot of people just don't understand what actual criticism and feedback is, it's not being a complete douchebag most of the time it's just extremely angry venting or it's just people wanting to be a contrarian and reaching.
There's legit criticism people can make about it, but just calling the writers stupid because you personally didn't like a character isn't that.
And quite often the same people only ever make negative posts about the game and never have anything good to say at all it's not really unfair to question their motives at that point.
But sure, apply the same level of '' criticism '' to a game like God of War and see the reaction you'll get.
It won't be any different if anything it'll probably be worse.
Just wanna point out perhaps the reason you get criticized is the way you phrase your comments about the story.
By saying the story is bad (or that it 'just isn't one of the good ones' as you put it here) you're insulting the taste and preferences people who disagree with you by implying they like bad things. Also by saying 'I skip every scene but still somehow know enough about what happens in those scenes to know they're bad' you kind of put yourself on rocky ground for actually discussing the quality of the story. It'd be like 'I went to a restaurant, ordered a meal and threw it in the garbage because I knew it was bad' or 'I watched a movie, but closed my eyes and plugged my ears for the entire thing. It sucked' - if you skip everything, you really objectively lack the knowledge to judge it's quality. That's not to say you should stop skipping - if you don't enjoy it, you should skip it. But you should then not pretend you know the actual quality of the story.
If you stick to 'I personally don't like the story, it just didn't really resonate with me' or something along those lines rather than 'FF games usually have good stories but not this one!', you might get less blowback on your comments.
That being said, I agree that nobody should be witch-hunted for their preferences... however, I do wish people would think about more about WHY they might be getting the responses to their comments that they are...
I sometimes feel there are habitual cutscene skippers since the beginning of their time in the game, living on a 'story is boring' angle that does not hold up today. As things got considerably good from the Doma-half of Stormblood and beyond, when Natsuko Ishikawa completely took over writing the main scenario from that point on to this day.
Well no, what I recall was your points being torn to shreds using source materials, and then you proceeded to throw a tantrum stating the above.
The posters you are criticising have been been going off of what the story has told them - and so they're calling out the lazy retcons, blatant contradictions and weird attempts at the justification of genocide despite the story and characters within it insisting that such acts were an unforgivable red line that could never be crossed.
I mentioned this in the past in a different thread. Some players become so involved in FFXIV that any criticism of the game is interpreted as a personal attack on themselves and they lash out at the criticizer as a defense mechanism to protect their egos. That's precisely what we're seeing right now in this thread, but with someone who inadvertently admitted to it.
Can we pause the thread for a few minutes? I need to go make more popcorn.
I like the story at least from heavensward to shadowbringers. I don't like that they've been clearly sacrificing other aspects of the game for it in recent years though. Endwalker may as well have been a visual novel and it was so boring because of it. First time an expansion has felt like this to me.
It's pretty natural to be defensive when someone insults you by saying you have bad taste or your preferences are bad in an objective manner. Nearly everyone - easily 99% of the human population - reacts negatively to that insinuation.
You've probably done it yourself, possibly without recognizing it.
It would be really good if people could learn to discuss things they dislike without acting like they're objectively bad. It'd remove a lot of the defensiveness.
Great example of a way to prevent people from attacking your feedback right here: "I don't like" "felt like this to me"
And some specifics about the reasons why they felt that way.
And none of it is based off of made up stuff. Just... this is how I felt, this is why I felt that way. Not 'it sucks and you're bad for feeling that way'.
The funny thing is... I've never really seen anyone in that certain megathread or any other thread say or imply that those who enjoyed the story as whole are dumb or bad -- at most, people getting spicy about certain characters. If there were, they are quite few in number. Is all of this happening on the meteion site or elsewhere?
I've seen a lot of "you misinterpreted" "you misunderstood" "you just don't understand" "you're just a hater" "you just don't like that your faves didn't 'win'" against those who didn't like the story, however. And I've never seen this before Endwalker. Did anyone say that during, say, Stormblood? I was too busy actually enjoying the game and raiding with my friends and felt no need to vehemently defend anything.
There is also no shortage of posters like the one I was responding to, who will fly right out of gate with hostility and tell you your opinions are invalid while creating arbitrary criteria and hoops you must jump through for "acceptable" ways to phrase your opinions (which, let's face it, they will smack down anyway)... because apparently you must respect them because reasons. Almost as if it's pass-agg mindgames that are designed to bait and provoke you!
Also, I'm only now noticing this is a Titanwomen thread. No wonder.
Nah, I'm not. I'm saying people do. People are ASSUMING I did. But I haven't been upset this entire time.
People are making a lot of assumptions about my emotional investment in a forum thread. I can't prove them wrong so I'm not gonna bother making a huge deal out of that part of their insinuations. However since you asked relatively politely, I'll happily respond to you regarding it. No, I'm not emotionally invested. I don't feel attacked. I don't feel hurt. I am simply responding to peoples' comments as they come. If you were to REALLY take assessment of my emotional state, the comment that most accurately shows it is the 'did I just get troll bingo?' - I'm having fun. I enjoy forum discussions, even when they become vitriolic. It's amusement. Distraction from other stresses.
But I will say that it is perfectly natural for people to react negatively to those types of insinuations. Most people do it. Different people react differently to those types of insinuations, so not everyone explodes in rage... but it happens a lot more often than you may like to think.
