How is new AST feeling?

AST has lost a lot of what made it fun. The original card system, where each card had a different effect, and pair that with the old time dilation - those were the best days of AST's life. Each subsequent expansion stripped something away, and now it feels simple and dumbed down. Most of its color drained has been away. It can still do the job well so I'll level it up (I'll level all healers to max no matter what), but I can easily see SGE becoming my new main.

I believe it's best to prioritize using the cards, whether on your team or yourself, with a secondary priority given to using redraw to try and get the best combination of seals possible.
It's a bit of a waste of time and resources to try and force a perfect Astrodyne every time, and you're better off trying to start a new Astrodyne anyway, rather than tossing out a card (and losing out on a 15 second 3/6% Damage increase for 30 seconds) or drawing new cards to get the perfect set (and pushing out using what you had for another 30+ seconds, without a guarantee that you'll get what you're missing).

Astrodyne doesn't buff your party. I'm not talking about regular cards, which are perfectly fine (although some will argue dps cards are bland, I'll stay neutral on that). Nor am I talking about RNG, which is fine if triggered often enough (for example, DNC has rng and works). I'm talking about Astrodyne, Redraw and the new Seal system.

Essentially, all Astrodyne does is restore MP and add roughly 80-180 potency worth of self-buff on a long 90 sec cooldown. It's not worth playing the seal-juggling mini-game for. Astrodyne, Redraw, Minor Arcana and Crown Play combined are 4 dps buttons that don't even contribute to 5% of your damage output. That's what I'm saying is a waste of hotbar space. Busy for the sake of busy with no real reward.

Always use it on cooldown regardless of what seals you have. Especially never use Undraw for 3 Seal. Remember the 3rd seal effect is only a 5% damage increase on you, the weakest dps in the entire group, while a regular card is 6% on a damage dealer. 3 seal is really that weak.

3 seal astrodyne is 50% more net potency gain than astrodyne, which means you can delay aatrodyne to fish for a small potency gain every 4 draws. you also can hold lords of crowns until dyne is up.

the order or seals also matters to know wether fishing for a 3rd seal is worth it as opposed to just using dyne asap. if your 2 seal pattern is XYX or XXY, trying to get a Z seal next draw is worth it, byt if the pattern is XYY then its not

its not about wasting cards, but about wether to overwrite seals and how astrodyne would line up with MA, star, or div if you do.

Yeah, that's the most optimal way to play AST right now, and it is really bad. No real way to manipulate the seals you get, no real reward when you get 3 seals. Why even bother...

Okay, I understand what you're saying, but I'm not sure whether this way of playing is fun/optimal, I'll need some time to adapt.

I don't even understand what they tried to achieve with Astrodyne.
To me it needs to be reworked, it doesn't feel rewarding or great to use right now.
It could even be erased it would be better.

I know Astrodyne only affects myself and the gains are minor at best but I am now wasting cards or potentially *gags* thinking of using Undraw so I can get the 3 seals. NEVER have I done that. I'm happy that Divination is no longer tied to the seals but people are selfish and mostly only think of themselves (myself included) so I would waste a card just for the potential of a missing seal.
I think if I had another redraw or a way to burn unwanted cards, turning into a minor arcana like ShB did, I would be happier.


Edit: Also the button bloat on AST now is too much. Most classes I can easily manage with 24 buttons. We lost 1 ability and gained 4 extra. I have run out of toolbar and hotkey space.

Fair enough. However, the cards have to be drawn and played to access Astrodyne so even the regular cards are very much part of its mechanic, which makes the steady DPS increases given to the party valid in the point I am trying to get across when it comes to Astrodyne's overall effectiveness.

If we want to look at just the effects of Astrodyne, I have addressed this many times now with how the seal configuration and rewards should work. But to reiterate the MP restore, that should just be an additional effect, and not have anything to do with the seals. The seals should be about how much of a damage increase is granted to the AST, which I think should work like slots with how things are currently set up. This would require the least amount of rework from the dev team.

They could go crazy with the seals where the different combinations of seals all do different things. Kind of like: 1,2,3 or 1,1,2 or 2,3,3 but that would be nuts. And the return of the old system is completely off the table. It just has to be a simple system, with simple mechanics, and simple rewards. I can't stress enough that two glaring issues with AST is its high APM, and button bloat. It does not need a sophisticated and deep mechanic on top of this, and measures need to be taken to reduce these issues as things are now.

At least I really don't like the new stars. Placing it where it needs to be when it pops was part of what made AST's kit fun for me and now that's gone. Can SE please stop lowering the skill ceiling for no good reason.

Because they really do need all the help they can get, sometimes.

Dunno why Undraw still exists. Remove it post haste.

Lord/Lady of Crowns and its "Play" button should be one button.

Draw, now having 2 charges and Play can stay separate, but if they can be a one button press, please make them a one button press.

Haven't gotten Exaltation yet (am only 85) but having read what it does it further makes me want SE to just commit to AST being a regen/time based healer and get rid of all shields and direct heals (so Benefic 1 + 2 and Helios) and just keep ED.

My opinion on that :

more effective than ShB but now it is no longer fun to play,too many buttons (i only have like 1 slot left on my 3 bars lmao),the star ruined,the card system is fucking awful and i didnt expect them to do worse than ShB's version on that
about the "too many buttons" : normally i wouldnt have as much issue with it but when a tons of your buttons actually need you to switch targets,it just became hell to keep up with everything,especially in endgame content...

I'm so danm angry because AST used to be my favorite job ever in stormblood,but then its ruined in ShB (still a bit of fun) and completely dead in EW

Having played a little bit more, I have a few thoughts:

-I love how fast pace it feels with all the oGCD weaving. I gravitate more toward jobs that have a lot of oGCD I can weave.

-It's a bit much but I do love how big Earthly Star is. >w>()

-While I'm not opposed to seals being used to buff the user, Astrodyne feels weak to me. Others have suggested that the MP-refresh and speed boost be baked into the skill automatically and the number of seals affecting your damage and healing potencies and I think that would be better. Someone else suggested being able to use Astrodyne on other partymembers and I think that is also interesting.

-Undraw is a waste of a slot. There is just no logical reason to ditch a card you could give to a DPS just to try to fish for seals to increase your own DPS.

-Like I said before, having Minor Arcana and Crown Play separate feels awkward.

Still best healer ingame. Has still million ogcd tools and star is as big as a Boss Arena. Divination having always 6 % is ok but what isn’t ok is making astrodyne with 1 redraw per card and no sleeve draw is massively rng, it’s just annoying when you get no 3 seals for ages and some runs only 3 seals. Atleast the old card system gave me something too think about now it’s just “bad rng and you can’t do jack against it”. Queen is 99.9 % absolute useless because I already have millions of ogcd heals and because it’s a 50 % possibility to be a aoe dmg card I can’t even plan around the ability. It just doesn’t feel good anymore to play.

Minor Arcana feels absolutely awful. SE please fix

It's sad that I've actually moved to WHM for healing for now (we have a Sage in our group already or I'd play that) and I'll just keep AST for harder Savage or Ultimate for heal efficiency. I don't like WHM that much, but it does the basics and AST just wasn't fun.

What will probably happen is WHM will end up more popular in the majority of content again and AST will be avoided, so they'll buff AST even further while assuming WHM is fine because it's played. It's disheartening.

Am I wrong, or should I not worry much about seals now? The way I see it buffing the DPS is more beneficial and should be the priority. IMO Draw and Play should be 1 skill with charges and let fortune decide the outcome of Astrodyne, rendering redraw/undraw useless and safe to remove. Divination and Astrodyne could be merged too. Both lvl 50 spells granting a buff, it could be a 2 part spell, one self buff another a party buff. Its a waste of space for the job with more skills right now.

Then the same with Crown Play and Minor Arcana. Merge into 1 skill with 1 charge.

Synastry seems like another spell that could get removed as its effect is very situational. Could even be reworked into a trait that you heal those affected by your cards/buffs?

Lightspeed and Neutral Sect could also be merged if further space is needed.

Even non aspected heals could get replaced with the aspected ones.

I expected them to do more work in this manner for AST but we find ourselves in a worse position than in ShB.

i agree they should consolidate each of draw/play and minor arcana/crown play into 1 button. its unwieldy having so many ogcds for things that dont warrant extra hotbar slots

The cards are not terrible by any means but manipulating your cards in SHB was very rewarding. Every un-needed seal could be an improved dps card which was always useful and sleeve-draw left you with very few instances of being RNG-locked out of the seals you needed.

With clarifying draw and the loss of sleeve draw, and with the rework of minor arcana we have lost 3 distinct areas of card manipulation that were hindered or removed. As a result we often get stuck with 2/3 unique seals for Astrodyne. Which feels bad because not only do we lose a precious damage buff, but it just feels bad to be so limited in what you can do after an expansion that awarded ample time to produce 3 seals before your divination CD was back up. Minor Arcana aditionally is back to the old, could be a heal, could be a damage, button. At least its aoe now so it potentially could save you a helios but it remains to be seen if thats going to be more than a rare occurrence.

I would really like to see Sleeve Draw return or for clarifying draw to see some changes. Clarifying draw buffs should stack if you don't use them (up to 3). I also feel that minor arcana is currently suffering from similar problems DRAW did at the beginning of Shadow bringers, where it just feels weird to have a second draw button and a second play button.

I only got AST to lvl 82 on my Au ra. I LOVE how busy it is. But for Astrodyne, I feel like they missed an opportunity for us to manipulate our buffs. I don’t mind the current buffs since it allows me to spam Gravity with no concerns of mp but they could’ve added one more mechanic to it to reward the entire group. Something like as long whoever happens to have a card buff on them can spread the effect to others when we hit astrodyne. Something that could help tie into the cards.

So this is a repost from a healer feedback mega-thread:

Macrocosmos is awesome, Fall Malefic and Gravity 2 are quite cool-looking and fairly solid even if Gravity 2 wasn't much of a potency increase. Divination not needing seals anymore is amazing, and I noticed I don't lose seals upon dying which is great.

The Arcana Lady card doesn't feel good to use. It's just a Helios clone that requires RNG while its Aspected Helios cousin doesn't. It would be nice if they removed the RNG, if they insist on having two buttons, by having one draw each card and then hitting it again plays it like how Macrocosmos, Earthly Star, Horoscope, etc have a "press once to prime, twice to detonate" so you could choose between a free Helios or chunky damage, both sharing a cooldown. Either that or they need to either merge them almost like Assize, or make Lady more potent to make up for the RNG since right now it feels just kind of there.

Astrodyne doesn't feel impactful in the slightest, or at least its impact is very difficult to actually use, and is too reliant on RNG now that RNG-reducing abilities like Sleeve Draw and multi-charge redraw are gone, plus once you get 3 seals you are forced to hold your cards as there's no way to "burn" them in a way that doesn't give seals so that you don't mess up your seal combo. That RNG can mean the "cooldown" of a 3-seal can be anywhere from 120 seconds to several minutes if luck isn't on your side depending on how long you have to keep cycling seals to finally end up with one of each. The buffs also don't feel very powerful. I didn't notice the speed buff doing anything because our cast times are already short when not using Lightspeed, and mostly used it so far for mana in a pinch but otherwise just sat there not being used very often since firing out buff cards is more useful than the rare chance of having a 3-seal right as you need it. So overall it feels just...meh. It doesn't feel very strong and the RNG makes it difficult to use at full power even then.

So overall it's fairly hit-or-miss with the new seal-spender, RNG mitigation loss and Crown cards changes suffering almost all of said miss. Cool idea, but the execution could use some work.

It cause ungrateful people complain about stormblood ast way too much(the best ast ever) and that is what cause it to become so down graded because people excuse that the only card of use was balance or overall it was too rng heavy and had too much complications to utilize each card.

The point and power of ast was not about personal dps but making sure the party does it as much as possible not only with dry balance and more dps but to even fortify defense, help with attack skill/spell speed even mp recovery and the ability to extend their buffs + other buffs from other jobs ike old stormblood bards buffs to make up their would slightly less dps pressing boring malefic all day. Every card cept spire after tp even if rare was useful to me.

Majority about 80% of player base hated noct (even though its powerful if used right and even pwn sch shields by margins in shadow bringers. The ultimate buffs it use to have, its stances are gone to be the healer that is versatile to cover the role of the other one you dont have as a co healer., its just dead now to me. I would not even be surprise if whm take it spot again, oh well loving and rocking sage. I wonder if they even had the dignity to rewrite the ast story and stop confusing these poor sprouts that ask about things like time dilation, doubt it. I just do not hope they do not do this to sage, if they buffing it or something fine like potencies but, I rather not see this healer get torn down like they did poor ast.

I have to say I am enjoying the changes to sage. Never really grabbed me previously but now it is fun. Sch was my fave but now it's a close run between ast and sge. Both for their own reasons.

I'm not to 90 yet, so I'll reserve my full judgment for later, but currently it feels pretty much the same way it did in Shadowbringers overall. I still miss Stormblood's Ast playstyle. It was fun and engaging and really played into the job fantasy well. Utilizing time based buffs with a variety of card effects. If FFXIV was a single player game Stormblood's Ast would have been perfect... unfortunately as the meta continues to push toward "BUT MA DPS" and "NUMBERS", RNG based mechanics will continue to get snuffed out, and jobs will continue to become more and more homogenized for "optimization", instead of fleshing out the unique qualities that make each job different.

So now that I have AST to 90...

Thoughts on Draw and Lord/Lady have not changed. If you can make them fewer buttons, do so.

Lady feels useless at times. Its either wait until an aoe goes off to it can be put to use... or spend it.

Undraw. Should. Not. Exist. Get rid of the blasted thing.

Astrodyne I was trying to be nice to it because quite honestly when the ability was reveled I immediately hated it. After using it for a bit my thoughts have changed from my first impression, but it is still a negative. Why is haste tied to it? I don't feel it at all. Mana regen being tied to it I get, but why is it one of the buffs instead of just when you press it? 5% can stay at 3 unique seals and the mana regen can also stay as well, but please explain to me why I should like the haste part tied to it. I don't get it.

I... also don't get Macrocosmos. It feels like a worse Earthly Star to me even though logically it shouldn't be. Perhaps I'm using this ability wrong.

Exaltation is taking getting used to.

I read somewhere and have heard people want to get rid of Synastry and to that I say:

Instead of having two Celestial Intersections why can we not change Synastry so it works with more than just Benefic 1 and 2? Why can't it be used to give two CIs to two different people? Why can't it be used to do the same with A. Benefic? Or Essential Dignity? Or Exaltation? I'd prefer that than scrapping the skill altogether.

(I'd also make the proposal for Lady of Crowns to count towards Horoscope to make it Horoscope Helios but I think that's asking for too much.)

I agree with everything. I took the job to 90 and while I could heal through large pulls, there were so many buttons to achieve keeping people alive and then buffing as well, that I barely had time to dps when the tank wasnt awesome at their job.

Started leveling WHM and it is really night and day. No stress. Big heals, dps galore. WHM feels like a nuke and AST like a fart. AST is for people that really love to micromanage and it is in dire need of removal of buttons.

I've been having a blast with the New AST and been loving the new skills as well, however, I still have some griped with the job itself.

Redraw - needs to be a new seal instead of being pulling the same seal for the other version, either that change or give us back the 3 stacks of redraw

Play/Crown Play - I don't mind play just so I can control where the buff goes and not overwrite it but Crown Play is unnecessary because both of the card are just an aoe starting from you. just make it so MA becomes Crown Play please.

Astrodyne - I really like the concept they have for this skill but it is really a downer for me since it's just for myself. Others also seems to feel the same. I think that they should make it so that we can use Astrodyne to another user and have the same buffs apply to them as well as ours mostly cuz not everyone needs MP.

Exaltation - I really like this skill, no other thoughts about it.

Macrocosmos - This skill is really satisfying when used at the right time and the animation is just amazing.

Everything else seems fine for me IMO, just a couple tweaks to Astrodyne and the Play buttons and I think it should be quite alright.

I'm still hoping we get Time Dilation or Old COpp effect back and was thinking that Astrodyne might be it but alas.

I think this expansion I'm giving up on AST sadly. I agree with a lot of points made in this thread and yearn for the card system from Stormblood but it's never coming back and I'm okay with that.

♦ Button bloat is too much that in my 30 button setup I can't fit all the AST and Role skills. If Squeenix is pushing that the seals dont matter and I should always be using them then a) get rid of undraw b) combine draw/play and Minor Arcana/Crown Play. I have sadly removed Synastry from my hotbar cause it never sees use and the moments that do are so rare that an AoE heal just seems the better option.
♦ Astrodyne. I like it but I don't love it. It keeps the class busy. It has required me to change my thought process of chasing 3 seals, 2 seems to be the goal now. If I play my cards right and Divination I can see a 17% Damage boost (selecting self for Play). I would like to see Astrodyne buffed in some way though as I don't feel that I'm missing out by ignoring it. An idea would be having Synastry apply the Astrodyne effect to its target too.
♦ I'm also not a fan of the Minor Arcana as it stands now. I prefered the SHB version because it was always used. No card felt like a waste. Now I hold onto the free AoE heal/Attack until I can draw the next one. I hated it in Stormblood and I hate it now but I also understand why it's back, because Seals dont matter and you should always use a card to get Astrodyne of sooner. If fishing for the right seal was more impactful then I would prefer us getting the ShB Minor arcana back.

I’ve been maining this job ever since its release in HW, back when the old card buffs only lasted 15s and it had lower healing potencies. After making it my 1st 90 job here are my thoughts:

- Release ast, which was genuinely terrible, was a ton more fun than current ast.

- The card system is terrible. Divination not requiring seals makes using cards just feel like button bloat, even if I am buffing other party members. On top of that, even if the utility was “useless” to people who optimized everything in the game, old ast cards were infinitely more fun.

- The only good thing about Astrodyne is the MP regen, and even then that’s only in scenarios where you’ve had to res a LOT of people. This is compounded by that fact that lucid dreaming was buffed.

- Earthly star takes 0 skill now. I get that it was changed to alleviate people standing outside of it, but I hate this change. They could’ve just gave it some sort of bubble effect to indicate the range, while also increasing the range slightly.

I would write more but I don’t wanna beat a dead horse anymore than it’s already been beaten. They managed to make sage feel incredibly fun for me, so at least there’s that.

if you can handle the button bloat astro absoutly shit on whm it has so many tools now.

Also it's basicly impossible to go out of mana now you dont even need to use the mana regen skill draw card and astrodyne is enough.

You can remove Benefic and Helios from the hotbar if you need room for skills since you dont even need them anymore aside from low level content.

How to fix AST:

1/ Play is a 2 part action. It will trigger Draw on first press and Play on second press. The icon will display as Draw at first and turn into the card logo after.
♦ To keep it simple, it should do what this macro does but without the macro delay and updating the spell icon to reflect the card drawn.

2/ Exactly the same as above but with Minor Arcana and Crown Play.

3/ Combine Divination and Astrodyne into 1 skill (both level 50 spells granting a buff) - simply add the Divination damage to Astrodyne. Tweak numbers to balance the x3 30secs (3cards) cooldown if needed.

4/ Combine Exaltation with either Celestial Intersection or Synastry
♦ Else Celestial Intersection needs a buff/change, can increase CD to 60secs but increase cure potency to atleast 350.
♦ Synastry can be removed completely or reworked. IE - make it a passive trait that triggers its actual effect on anyone affected by some of your spells (IE - Celestial Intersection, Aspected Benefic, card buffs...)

C'mon Square, making AST awesome is just 2 steps away. The class is not bad, its the little detaills that are failing.

Hey guys! Been a while. :eek: Hope everyones enjoying the expansion or trying lol.

So anyways, I pretty much quit SHB because of AST. Won't lie, because of this one job I subbed maybe a total of 5 times, and played 2 weeks each time
because of AST and how terrible it's been for the last several expansions while being a boring balance bot and continue to see it turn to crap.
Bring back the Time Mage aspect and bring back my cards or I'm pretty much capping and never touching again.
I'm still incredibly disappointed in AST and seeing the EW version, I really do not care if AST can heal better than WHM.
What made it fun is gone.

Don't wanna beat the horse forever so:
PLEASE return the Time Mage aspect and Old cards FOR THE LOVE OF GOD PLEASE.
I may sound a bit dramatic but it hurts to see one of my fave jobs in the many MMO's I played
constantly get pooped on every 2 years man lol! Please HW AST! Someday?

I picked up AST during Shadowbringers and I'm still levelling it to 90. But here are my thoughts so far:

- I'm fine with how they reworked cards and Redraw, and I get why seals now matter for Astrodyne instead of Divination
- On the other hand, I don't see the point in Astrodyne since I don't care about buffing myself, making the whole card minigame a bit pointless. Divination being just a button you press on cooldown makes me sad.
- Minor Arcana being unrelated to the on its own is... weird.

here are my ideas to give the AST some QoL.

1.Redraw

The Cards are great till them now. I like the SB but that will never come back, but its better than this in ShB (no more 24 macrocardsystem ty SE btw)^^

But let "Clarifying Draw" stack till 3 times, pls. I understand also appreciate that Redraw doesn't give 100% Astrodyn on his best form and thats okay the future is not set in stone. Yep you can play a round in 120 min Windows, but the people, dont want to play it. I play around that but I am only ast player here.

2. Minor Arcana
First of all to everyone who says that the skill only needs one button. It can be done. ^^ For that this skill needs less RNG and my Idea is to make it dependent form that.

So Minor Arcana chnages to Lord of Crowns if you use a DPS skill like Fall Malefic, Gravity II befor you use Minor Arcana.

And if you use Aspected Benefic, Aspected Helios, Helios also Healing MAGIC than Minor Arcana is going to be a Lady of Crowns.

If you want only 2 bottons than make a buff like Lady or Crown rdy. If should be one (hey Crontroller player ^^) than let it be one that changes all times.

The Rest is okay for the Moment in terms of not knowing the heavyness of healing.

Earthly star range is stupid huge, almost pointless in a way. Kinda takes the fun out of it and I know dam well they’ll never revert it. As they have never made any logical reductions unless it’s a rework

I said this on another post and I'll just copy/paste because I really hope they see my feedback.

As an Astrologian main, I completely dislike what they have done to the job. They added way too many buttons to press for the sake of more RNG and very little reward. There are now three RNG factors; Draw, Seals (for Astrodyne), and Minor Arcana.

Seals and Astrodyne: It feels lackluster. The chances of you getting all three different seals is very minimal and the speed boost is awful.
Minor Arcana: It's like the old Astrologian again; no one wants to pull Lady of Crowns when you have to prioritize DPS.
Draw: I like it. Having two cards ready at the start of the fight feels nice.
Redraw: Why does it still exist? With the changes to Astrodyne and Divination, it feels so unimportant.

Landing your cards right should be an Astrologian's priority and part of its DPS rotation. I would totally remove Redraw, Undraw, Minor Arcana, and possibly Astrodyne or perhaps revert how seals used to work in Shadowbringers.
