Dark Knight Megathread

Both PLD and DRK showed some mitigation skill personally i hope these replace rampart
and WAR was shown flailing around which to me just looks like an AOE upheaval :/

I looked at that footage slowed down and it's most likely just a Mitigation skill. There's a blue aura around Paladin as well and by the looks of it it's a shield on PLD so it's probably the same for DRK.

It could also very well be an updated version of Shadow Wall or TBN, but that's just hypothesizing on this part. Another interesting fact is how Plunge creates this screen shaking effect similiar to GNB's Blasting Zone. Perhaps they did that only for the trailer, don't know. All in all I'd keep my expectations low just in case.

Also, at 3:05 seconds if you take a good look at DRK, Delirium still is there.

I rewatched the benchmark several times but im unable to see Delirium there, the only thing i have hope right now is this from the Q&A:

Q - Will there be jobs where it's been changed drastically in how they are played? If so, what job would that be?
A - We cannot answer this. While there ARE, we cannot tell you which job it is. Please look forward to the next PLL.

I really wishing to much that job is DRK, please for the lord.

Okay so Dark Knight really has a problem in a couple of areas. One has to do with how percentile mitigation works vs shields. In a one on one fight, Dark Knight is probably okay, but when dungeon running and dealing with multiple packs of enemies they are at a huge disadvantage in terms of mitigation tools compared to something like paladin or warrior. This is due to the fact percentile mitigation > shields / self heals when pulling large packs of enemies, since the percentile reduction "scales" with the number of opponents. Shields do not.

The other problem dark knight has is the unnecessary complexity and ackwardness of the rotation. It takes a lot to get used to using the MP based OGCD attacks, since they do not have a typical cooldown on them to help guide a player on when to use them or not. So it's easy to blow all your MP and what not while in a fight. This is actually pretty manageable during the mid tier levels of the job, but when you stack delirium into the mix with blood gauge, that's when it starts getting to be a maintenance nightmare.

My own opinion is that blood gauge shouldn't exist and the abilities that are on the blood gauge should be cooldowns. It's AOE mitigations should definitely be working on all types of damage to avoid the same problem elemental resistance had back in WoW (I mean, we don't even care if the damage is magic or physical in normal content, we just care about how much it does), and for flavor it probably should have an aoe version of Blackest Night in addition to blackest night. The job really is about mixing dark magic with sword play, so just make it more about the MP and less about blood gauge.

I mean, dark knight feels like how many ways can we make a tank complicated to play.

1) Salted Earth has to be placed on the ground manually by clicking a target spot.
2) Blood Gauge has to be emptied regularly while also managing a bunch of OGCD attacks.
3) We got MP management between mitigation and Damage dealing to stack on top of the cooldowns.
4) Just for fun, we have the tank invuln that requires being healed to full so make sure you tell your healer when you're under the effects of living dead. (This one is probably okay since people usually learn to watch for it)

I actually macroed the salted earth to place it under an enemy during normal content just to avoid having to place it manually, given that the delay from the macro is about equivalent to the delay of manual placement. Healers don't really have the same issue since the role gives a little more flex time on the actions.

honestly none of the tank really have any issues with big pack pulls besides maybe PLD in some areas
most dungeons are pathetic anyway.

Complicated doesn't imply hard to use. It's complicated because it has too many ideas in the pot. It takes ideas from warrior and paladin, but the flow of the job isn't as precise or guided as the other two jobs, hence complex. It's far easier to slip up and burn your MP when you needed MP for a tank buster compared to something like the warrior or paladin where that almost never happens. Albeit, you can always fall back on the role mitigation skills, but I think that the mitigation package only hitting magic attacks makes it rather weak.

I went through running leveling dungeons in shadowbringers the past few weeks with warrior, paladin, and dark knight. Taking into consideration you can get a bad healer, the dark knight has far more trouble on pack pulls. That's just how it works with the math since it has a shield instead of a mitigation skill as the 6 second buff. Warrior pulls far ahead of both due to the mix of self healing and role based mitigation skills. It just mechanically handles unexpected spikes in damage better than the other tanks, though paladin comes close with clemency. Big advantage to warrior over paladin is that they don't disrupt their rotation to get off the self heal through equilibrium.

I hope they move to a cooldown system for them instead. Love the aesthetic for the job but it doesn't feel right to me when running it. Even having a short cooldown on Eye of Shadow and flood of shadow so that when you are off tanking you do Eye of shadow -> Flood of Shadow, and then tanking is Eye Of Shadow -> Blackest Night, would probably help and just goes to show that having more buttons doesn't really make the job better. Could even have a combo where doing the Eye of Shadow before Blackest Night increases the mitigation amount.

Heck they could make it so Flood of Shadow + blackest night = party shields.

Yep thats totally Delirium good catch, *sigh* yeah we can't tell until september but ay least we can saddly confirm that Delirium stay in the game as a Buff of somekind, i Hope the skill get reworked, its been the most specific request of the entre expansión, i Hope current Delirium die un hell

I 100% agree with you, and you are going to make me cry, Shao32... X'D I will not be surprised if Dark Knight is not one of those drastically changed subclasses, and that the stupid ShB Delirium intends to stay. >-> I am still not going to hope yet, but it would be great if that means that Dark Knight
has been redesigned for the better...

That looks a lot like an upgrade to TBN (and to shieldtron on PLD? Maybe ? Or intervention)

Why do i feel that this mitigation skill is gonna be like one of those "evolved spells" (that only just are a potency buff and a new visual effect) like for example when edge of darkness becomes edge of shadow, and in this case it's gonna be something like "blackest night has evolved into : the shadowest blackest night!"
(maybe it is a real new spell, or the return of shadowskin or maybe it even adds something new to blackest night if it is the case, but i don't feel like it is, so please give me all the reasons in the world to prove me wrong i would gladly appreciate.)

Though the end animation seems kind of aggressive (with the wrist flick of the sword etc) so maybe it's a different buff ? This makes for quite a lengthy animation.

The animation for the new mitigation skill looks as if it is a Gunbreaker animation. If you pay close attention to it, the DRK adjusts his stance before the Plunge attack. It looks like a GNB stance. Probably used as a placeholder for the time being.

That would also make sense. To me it looks more like sword on back for a moment but there's a good amount of time until the animation ends. Interesting what this will end up being.

I'm not sure if this was mentioned yet but it could also be a DPS stance for tanks, it gives me that vibe. They're using it before attacking the monster. Probably wrong but worth mentioning I think.

The fact it creates an orb around the DRK would feel a bit weird for a DPS stance I feel, I wouldn't be against stances coming back but I don't think this is one

Yeah my expectations are fairly low too but i wont deny i apreciate that there is a 0.1% of having DRK being that job meaning they are going to rework it as how it was. Im nopt gonna lie, i know SCH and AST as been asking for big reworks too in the fairy and the card system and such and they are the ones that are probably get it due the healer role redistribution but i hope this 2 years of DRK gameplay identity complains mean something at the end.

Back to the new animations discussions the DRK bubble and the PLD multi shield are obviously defensive buffs to me, the thing is they are to flashy to being simply a upgraded TBN/Shelltron and looks like something you will use as an invul, my bet is they are going to delete the current invuls and will add this new defensive skills being less powerfull to spice all things, something having more recast than Sentinel and a bit more powerful so you play more with your defensive kit.

That was the weird thing, to me... "while there ARE, we can not tell you which job it is." ..."ARE" implies plural, but "job it is" is clearly singular, so there was either a translation error, or it was said in a misleading manner on prupose... So now I am thinking to myself: which one is it, then? one job or more than one job?, singular or plural? / That one thing is going to not stop to bother me, now.. until there is a clarification. That said, more than one job would be ideal, say.. the top 5 worst(in the common opinion of players) subclasses of our 18 Subclasses, Dark Knight included, being the plural number of subclasses that got a redesign...

I guess there is going to be 2 very long months until we know.

There are some pretty crazy animations already in game that people sort of blot out during rotations. Dark Knight has a ton more bling in the graphics department so it wouldn't surprise me if that is simply an upgraded TBN or a similar power to TBN.

I do sort of hope that they get around to adding a buff symbol for when you have the power gauge going. It seems odd that warrior has storms eye showing up there, but dark knight you need to completely depend on the job related icon.

Upgrading TBN might be an issue, if it's more shield it makes it harder to proc Dark Arts (unless that mechanic is changed).
Also just "It gives 35% HP as shield" instead of 30% is cool but...kind of boring ?

I was looking back at that part of the clip and maybe there's a sneak peak at another new skill? It's right before the BLMs cast the fires, looks like the DRK has some darkness orb going on. It really could just be edge of shadow though lol, when I look at it again. September can't come soon enough.

Not like the ShB Job trailer's Living Shadow ever had anyone in the first half...

I dont think the blackest night should be moved down, because there's damn good lore reasons to keep it at 70 (its a shield made out of love btw, that's why its so strong) rather I would suggest making the lower levels and the mitigation tools dark knight has actually worth something and make the blackest night less frequent. Its an example of a good capstone. Example: shadowskin getting blood price's effect.

Dark needs a lot of love other than those
-a free flow combo system including the return of its old unique abilities to make an uptime heavy combo tank we all loved
-much improved sustain and slight damage buff to match or exceed the other tanks if uptime is rewarded
-living dead fixed to grant true invulnerability, no longer kill the player and can be used/recovered from use by the dark knight alone, no more benediction
-levelling fixes. there shouldn't be huge gaps like 30+ levels with a single aoe step

What I hope to see in 6.0:

Abyssal Drain: Your lower-level aoe rotation. Unleash - Abyssal Drain. Give it a reasonable healing potency; your HP being the primary focus in lower content.

Stalwart Soul: Your higher-level aoe rotation: Unleash - Stalwart Soul - Quietus. The latter being an MP resource spender used in higher-leveled content.

Defense: A mix of both defensive cooldowns as well as skills that reward you for playing risky; receiving damage rewards you with additional resources such as MP.

Offense: Delirium shouldn't be an inferior Inner Release, instead Dark Arts needs to be entirely reworked. Dark Knight needs to impress with unique animations and style.

Dance: The underlying basis of what the playstyle could be is like a dance. It's not about reaching the climax and spending all of your resources right away, but the constant madness of being overwhelmed by "Darkness" with it being a struggle between sanity and insanity; i.e. playing this job well gives you a very satisfying feeling of staying in control. In short: Top your performance with combos upon combos to feel an overwhelming sense of power with as little repitition as possible.

Essentially DRK is your Dark Souls of tanks in FFXIV. I'd personally make it a job that's somewhat experimental in nature as well as demanding.

If we're talking theory, then non-expansion jobs tend to see between 4 and 5 advancements. 2 traits and 2-3 new actions.

A trait with "Improved Dark Arts" that lets it be spent on an OGCD for a markedly improved effect doesn't seem all that unreasonable. It would encourage staying at ~3k MP so you have enough to trigger Dark Arts, and a long amount of time to let cooldowns come back for the upgraded use. utilizing the old math for it, DA C/S was a +150% return (350 potency on a usual +140).

So you consume 3000 MP for Dark Arts (500 potency) and utilize it with Carve and Spit to gain ~1250 potency, which you can achieve with an aesthetically pleasing effect - Carve and Spit hits 3 times. This is +900 potency and +1200 MP (200 potency of MP). Bump up Carve and Spit to 500 baseline potency and that's the nearly +150% on the nose.

Oddly enough this same ratio seems to work for Abyssal Drain and Salted Earth. Abyssal drain at +150% puts it at 500, putting it at a little less than damage neutral to Flood but turning it into an absurd heal. Salted earth at +150% puts it at +450, but Salted Earth is probably prime to either receive an upgrade or be rebalanced higher - It was one of the few abilities to actively lose potency in the transition, and not due to the formula change, so Salted Earth should probably be boosted to 18 seconds at 75 potency (450), giving it +675. Both worth using in Single target and definitely worth using in AoE. However, given that I'm not a fan of DoTs, for the aesthetics I'd want it to be something that detonates for the damage, either at the end of Salted Earth or from debuffs stacking on the enemy that you detonate via another Dark Arts skill (Like Flood/Edge), but that's just personal preference.

Seems a good trait to put at 84/88.

I like the way you think. You get the benefit of DA altering skills like before ShB, but with the ability to stockpile the DA effect without it falling off naturally, being consumed by something you didn't want, and it cannot be spammed, by the nature of requiring a TBN break. There's even a small precedent for a system like this already existing in the game right now, Chelonian Gate on Tank BLU.

There's a hidden benefit to this, by having DA procs be consumed by other abilities, you actually remove Edge of Shadows from your rotation. This directly leads to Darkside no longer being as easy to maintain, because there are other things to use the MP for, TBNs for DA procs for augments when you need them. Of course, if you need to EoS, you are able to. But you could have a problem where you EoS so much in between bursts, you won't have the MP to TBN to gain the DA proc to use with oGCDs in time. And on the flip side, if you augment everything without your MP regenerators ready, or repeatedly fail to break your TBNs, it could leave you in an MP drought unable to use EoS, and you couldn't refresh Darkside for a little bit (albiet, this would be the more uncommon of the two.) One of my biggest issues with DRK right now is the lack of true choices, and the non-issue of Darkside upkeep. With this, you get a little bit of that. The choice to refunding your MP for Edge/Flood to keep up Darkside, or stockpile that proc for MASSIVE hits. I was always saying we needed a Darkside spender, I never thought about just using Edge less in the rotation by giving you an alternate spender for the proc! Not using TBN would be a straight DPS loss, since you wouldn't generate any procs. It pushes the DRK=TBN identity even further, we already know we're getting an augmented version of it. It's sounding better the more I think about it.

This actually fixes some things. You're also not removing anything at all from the kit, just expanding on the current foundation. I really like just this. I was thinking just now, "Well, assuming if CnS and AD are on the same cooldown in EW, surely you can't get a TBN break for both of them without dealigning them, not every fight will have a point where TBN can break instantly like that for the proc."

Sounds like a decent place for a new Delirium to go. Gives a free DA proc. It's 3K MP anyway right? Give it to people in SB saying "look free edge" and come mid-80s, whack 'em with the trait, and let them come to the natural conclusion that it's not just free edge anymore, it's easy augmentations. Weave it in the opener. TBN > Open > Edge > TBN breaks for proc > wait for raid buffs > DASkill+Delirium > DASkill+other stuff. Single target, CnS and Salted, in AoE, you use both Abyssal and Salted. But at the level you get Delirium (68?), we'd be looking at a semi-rework situation, you don't even get Dark Arts until TBN (70), the job gauge doesn't update until then, you'd need serious potency adjustments to balance the bloodspiller amount getting slashed, so I find that particular idea unlikely. It's nice to dream though! I love your core idea.

you actually remove Edge of Shadows from your rotation. This directly leads to Darkside no longer being as easy to maintain, because there are other things to use the MP for...
...One of my biggest issues with DRK right now is the the non-issue of Darkside upkeep.

I also hate the Edge/Flood of Darkness/Shadow spam, and although I already did post it in other Dark Knight threads, here is my own idea for how to deal with both the spam issue and the DarkSide upkeep is BrainDead issue...

First / Direct kill-off of the Edge/Flood of Darkness/Shadow spam. Both actions are changed to have a 15 second CD.

Second / Actions that grant and/or extend the DarkSide effect have that effect reduced from 30 seconds to 15 seconds, a direct attack on the upkeep issue, while this makes DarkSide not possible to maintain, if the Dark Knight uses only either Edge or Flood of Darkness/Shadow.

Third / The Dark Knight has four separate actions with the DarkSide additional effect. Two will grant and extend DarkSide, these two are Edge of Darkness/Shadow and Flood of Darkness/Shadow, while two will only extend DarkSide, two new oGCD actions; but these two will both have a CD, and will not share CD like how Edge of Darkness/Shadow and Flood of Darkness/Shadow do. Additionally, all four actions grant and/or extend DarkSide by only 15 seconds...
Like this, the Dark Knight has to use a oGCD action "rotation", between either Edge or Flood of Darkness/Shadow and either one of the two other oGCD actions, with their larger CDs, in order to maintain/upkeep the DarkSide effect, while also being tight enough that the Dark Knight has to put actual effort towards to keep the DarkSide effect active.

To be honest, I more or less have The Blackest Knight written as a name in my black book...
I view The Blackest Knight as a action that could be good, and at the moment is not. Just in my opinion, I see The Blackest Knight as a stupid action design, and that a part of it needs to be removed. I think that the mockery of Dark Arts should be deleted from The Blackest Knight... although I view the If-broken nonsense as not a bad idea, I view the If-broken bonus being a direct effect on the Dark Knight's damage potential.. as a stupid design that needs to be deleted, as it is a literal liability, in my perspective.
I would like it if The Blackest Knight's If-broken bonus was changed to a additional defensive effect, to make the action a great pure-defense action, instead of its current stupid design of being a literal liability to the Dark Knight's damage potential.

with that said, I will add... Although I admit that I am quite bias, and I hate the 5.x Dark Knight and its GamePlay quite a lot, I can also see, after reading through it all, that this IS a good idea... If I can not have what I want, and Dark Knight never be what I want it to be, a idea like this would be a good enough improvement, and much better than the absolute trash that is the 5.x Dark Knight disgrace.

while, last.. but aught except the least, on the subject of Delirium...I desire that 5.x Delirium ceases to exist, never to exist again... I want to see, and would prefer that, Delirium sort of revert back to 4.x Delirium, in the sense of a X.x Delirium being a remastered 4.x Delirium. Make the action once again be a action that directly restores MP, and buffs further restoration of MP, through giving a duration bonus or increase, or one-time use buff, to other MP restoring actions.

There's definitely room to improve the leveling process and when you unlock certain mechanics. Earlier the better.

For example, if at level 30 or 40, the Dark Knight unlocks 'Shadow Skin', an early version of The Blackest Night. Perhaps it only gives the health shield here. Then at level 70, it morphs into the Blackest Night, which grants the Dark Arts on breakage. Create the thought process that "I attack or defend" (Shadowskin) to "I defend to attack" (The Blackest Night) to "I defend to wallop the crap out of something" (Improved Dark Arts)

Introduce the concept of "Dark Arts" around level 50 or 60 with the trait "Another Victim", gained whenever you kill an enemy. This is more of a world / dungeon boon, but it allows the introduction of Dark Arts prior to TBN.

Honestly, I have no idea what should be done with Delirium. I'll have a different answer every day. Like right this very moment, I'd say get rid of it and replace it with a modernized Scourge.

"Another Victim" takes me back. It would work as a trait but honestly, Sole Survivor had a cool animation so I would love to see them return the ability in the following way:

It fills in the dead level we currently have at level 58, and it can give a variable amount of Healing. If the target dies, we get less HP and Dark Arts. If the target doesn't die, we get a nice burst heal with potency equivalent to Equilibrium and Aurora. More damage in trash packs, more healing in boss fights where Abyssal Drain ain't exactly doing much with it's 200 Cure Potency.

Can we do something about Dark Mind. There arent any ingame tooltips that show whether an attack is magical or physical. You just have to assume if its a spell that its magical or if its an AOE. Dark Mind either needs an additional effect or needs to be 10% physical and 10% magical reduction.

they have pointed out that they are not intentionally hiding what is or not magical damage just haven't found a way to implement it yet
and it might aswell just be 10% damage reduction with what you said
if anything dark mind should be 10% physical and 20% magical

Dark should excel in magic defense not be gimped by it

They mention there's only so much they can allocate to the UI atm. I wonder how much it would cost to have a little icon next to damage text and cast bars - Yellow for Physical, Purple for Magical.

Not a bad idea, for now we can only assume based on the visual and the type of ennemy, and the attacks name.
