Thing is, there’s a time and place. There’s a literal apocalypse going on with people being sacrificed and dying but meanwhile we have Graha making sparkly eyes at every person he meets. It ruins the immersion and seriousness of the plot and he just has no place in it.
Each to their own, I guess. My tastes lean towards the likes of Hien, Estinien and Gaius of the characters that are still around. Of the female characters that are still around I guess I'd go with Fordola or Radlia.
Even then, though, I wouldn't want those characters to excessively fawn over my character - but I've found the hero worship to have worn thin for quite some time now, even before G'raha returned to the story.
No, and this moment with G'raha and Estinien ruined what is probably a more import plot point: the meeting of Alisaie and Estinien which was played like a Pride and Prejudice meet cute. G'raha swooning to heros will not move the plot, but Alisaie and Estinien working out their preconceived notions and misunderstanding at their introduction in some part of 6.0 will.
This is exactly it. The voice over G'raha at the end of 5.3 should be the G'raha we have. He was serious in the face of the coming threat. Someone who knows terrible things are afoot and potentially is willing to deal with it in a mature manner befitting his history and role in it.
The 5.4 and 5.5 iteration erased all of that and made him a caricature of a border line predator who won't take anything serious because its the fun adventure he always wanted. This personality was unwarranted makes him not the mature and wise person he was on the First. Stakes are so high in the coming expansion is G'raha just going to go cry in his crystal tower when he has to watch a hero like Alphinaud or Estinien get cut down or be separated from the WOL for a period of time?
Yeah, okay. Let's just ignore that Alisaie's entire mood this patch, even as Arenvald is on his death bed, is basically, "Yeah, I'm amazing! Nobody can stop me!" G'raha's definitely the only problem in the cast right now.
(If they make it out alive, at least three Scions are due for a swift kick in the ass next story update.)
I mean, i’m not arguing with that. Personally i find both Graha and Alisaie annoying. However i will say Graha is a much more constant annoyance and he’s been that way for awhile. Constantly making every single plot point about him and trying to be the center of attention. He’s essentially Alisaie to the extreme.
Well, I can't speak for anyone else but I've never really cared much for Alisae either.
I didn't get the impression from Arenvald that he was overly confident or arrogant, though. He specifically has a somber moment where he reflects on not being as strong or special as a lot of other combatants. That aside, the last time he showed up in the story as a major focus was back in 4.1, which is quite some time ago now. Alisae and G'raha have been given far more focus since that point which I'd wager contributes to why they're starting to wear thin/overstay their welcome for some.
Estinien's reaction to her was funny at least.
That's actually it more or less. If you talk to him after certain quests he mentions he feels younger then he has in a very long time and naturally points to being in a much younger physical body as the reason. Couple that with getting a second chance at life after he spent over a century absolutely certain he was gonna die at the end of his quest to stop the Rejoining and it makes sense that he much less serious at the moment. Regardless of how serious a threat Fandaniel is, he isnt something Graha toiled away for a century physically and mentally to stop.
Not to say its all perfect writing, I do agree with the general opinion here that they overdid it in 5.4 with him. But I thought he was fine in 5.5, having a fanboy moment for somebody not the WOL was charming for me, made it feel less like a specific obsession with us and more that Graha is just a major history nerd, so when he gets a second chance at life to also meet all those historical hero's he read about he's gonna fanboy some. Other then that he was treated like just a regular Scion, and that works, speaking for myself of course.
As someone already pointed out, there are already canonical ages for a majority of the main cast.
There are only a few things I would add to this.
Y'shtola is anywhere between 33-41, since Papalymo was the oldest of the Scions, and story hints indicate Y'shtola is older than Thancred. Speculation is that she is on the lower end of that scale, since she, Thancred, and the actual Yda, were all close in age, and if she was still alive would be about 30. Additionally, she also views F'lhaminn as an "elder" if you will, and she is only 37. Though this could just be showing respect to someone's parent.
Hien is the same age as Lyse, so he'd be 25 as well.
Ryne is probably 17, but can be anywhere from 16-19. The reason for this is because of story cues, she is close in age to the twins, who were a year older on the first, and because of her model. Older teens, 16+ use the adult models, at least for Hyurs, as those are really the only "older" teens we encounter. For example, Leveva is 16, Ardashir is 17, and both Serendipity and Arenvald is 19. But Honoroit, an Elezen, is 14 and uses the child model. The only older teen Hyur who doesn't seem to use an adult model is A-Ruhn, for obvious reasons.
