More storage space is long overdue

I understand this is probably a really popular request but honestly I feel I have more than enough storage, and not saying that to be contrary.

Saddlebag is full of fishing bait.
One retainer has one tab full of items I may need such as Eden tokens, rathalos tokens etc. Another has a couple of tabs of crafting items and materia.
I use one bag of the four for food, potions and and am 300/400 on the glamour closet. Armoury chest generally is about just over half full.

The problem is while you’re levelling jobs you tend to amass a lot of stuff. But if you regularly keep on top of your inventory (vendor, list, desynth, trade cards, GC turn in etc) then you do have plenty of space. Glamour dresser is about keeping things you are actually going to use rather than a ‘got to have them all’ approach.

What i would personally like is the opportunity to sell more things at a time on MB.

Agree. The people that struggle with what we have would also struggle with another bag or 100 extra glamour slots I think.

Tbh I'd rather they give us craftable box's or something that just take up one slot but let us store x amount of certain items in them..

Reason being if they increase storage it rlly doesn't change anything, it will last 2 months until people need even more storage..

So maybe we should keep storage the same but give box,crates to crafter to make us.. so we can store 20 items in something that takes 1 slot.

The thing that makes me feel like I don't have enough space is crafting mats. Brand new recipes added in the latest expansion can take mats from ARR. So I end up keeping a lot of "old" mats in storage just because they still get used rarely.

The reason WoW could get away with less inventory space and it didn't feel cramped was because recipes always used mats from the expansion they came from (plus you only had 1 crafting job to even worry about).

I don't think the way FF14 does it is bad or wrong (I actually like it because content always stays relevant), but it does lead to feeling like you need more storage so that you don't have to waste time down the road dropping what you're doing to go gather an old mat that you threw out because you didn't think you would ever need it again.

This is quite rare now. It was a big problem in Heavensward but has been improved a lot in the last two expansions. Also the mats that they tend to use such as feathers and old cloths can usually be bought very cheaply or a retainer sent out to get them.

Old things such as flax don’t really tend to ever go up or down in value too much, so you can safely sell now and buy later. Just depends how much you value it v the value of your inventory slots I guess.

Yeah, and I actually like that. It allows the demand for those items to stay relatively constant, so new players have things to sell to make money with. I started playing just before ShB came out, so I was levelling my character while everyone else was hitting level 80, and I remember making a lot of money mining up spring water from S. Shroud and selling it to high level players who were working on their weaving.

I really commend this game for how well old content survives and stays relevant.

We seriously need more. No way around it. Sure, some people will fill it up but it's just too much stuff. The intervals I have to go to my GC etc get shorter and shorter. Bozja alone has gold coins, silver coins and four different memory tokens or whatever they are called. Then there is savage coins, twines, a 2nd weapon for handing in your main relic weapon. It's just clunky. Sure, there is a way around it which usually equates to spending time organising but it could be way better. I don't think people are talking about hoarding Alex tokens here.

Okay, side note: I WOULD REALLY LOVE A FISHING TACKLE BOX so I didn't have to figure out where the hell I put that one bait I need for that one thing I need to catch. (Or, if I'm being honest, so I didn't just keep re-buying the ocean fishing bait because I realize I left it in my chocobo saddlebag as we're sailing into the first stop.)

I think the real issue with glamour dresser is if you have something you wanted to use for a glam at one point, and then don't have an immediate need for. If it took a long time to grind (say, Eurekan elemental armor +2), do I throw it out and go for it again? Or do I leave it in the glamour dresser eating up a spot even if I'm not using it now, since I might want it later?

Because I will admit I've thrown out gear I no longer needed, only to later realize that I came up with a perfect glam to use it for. This always gives me Large Sadness when I have to go, say, run an alliance raid however many times to get the same piece again. (On the plus side, I know Orbonne Monastery very well now...)

Even beyond that, there are non-glamour considerations. Like, take outdated raid weapons. I've got that Edengrace cane, but I don't want it for glam (because it's ugly, in my opinion). On the other hand, it's my BiS for TEA. I want to do TEA someday; should I stuff that weapon into a retainer and hold on to it, or should I trash it and then go run E4S a bunch of times to get it again when I am going to run TEA?

Add to that the fact that they are continually introducing new seasonal glamour, glamour you pay actual money for in the cash shop, etc. At that point, even without hoarding real actual stats-bearing gear, the glamour dresser can start getting a bit pinched for space.

Even worse, we have... what, seventeen combat jobs (18 if you count Blue Mage), not to mention crafters/gatherers, and only fifteen glamour plates, meaning glamour fiends aren't able to make one distinct appearance for every job, much less have more than one.

So inventory management aside, I think you can make a solid argument for the glamour dresser being expanded, or at the very least having more glamour plates added.

Actually, you can do this part currently. Much like gaining extra inventory space, you can pick up extra retainers to sell things on the market by adding a monthly fee onto the subscription; each retainer has their own market sales limit, so each retainer gives you another set of market slots.

The (inconvenient) alternative to picking up those extra retainers is unfortunately much the same as inventory and glamour management: just be judicious in what you're picking, and dispose of the rest. Namely, only list the things you believe are likely to sell at a profit, while selling everything else to NPC vendors.

Also the glamour dresser is filled even faster when you keep at least, head-chest-arms-legs-shoes of some sets. Also it would help if you could ignore jobs when glamouring accessory, at least for stuff like lakshmi or raids where usually all jobs got the same design anyways.

Mhmm I’ve just started completing the weaver log and I’m stunned at how those same things I was gathering in 2018 like fleece and flax are basically exactly the same worth as they used to be. Very surprising and good for low levels to make Gil :)

I would love a tackle box. Essentially my saddlebag is the tackle box.. but I’m starting to wonder why bait is even an item like it is.. just make it so you can select it from the hotbar would be nice. Might be worth them revising it and seeing if we actually do need all these different ones too.

I know about the extra retainers and I wouldn’t mind paying for them but it’s only now and again I’d need them. I guess when people pay real money for them they are unlikely to raise it in game.

Yeah, this does NOT help the situation. If there's an earring design I like, and I may want to use it in glams for several different jobs, I have to keep at best Fending, Slaying, Aiming, Casting, Healing to have complete freedom to use it. In some cases folks might need to keep Maiming, Striking, and Scouting variants instead of just 'Slaying'. Even when all those earring variants are identical.

The Ronkan accessories are offenders here for me, personally. The necklace in particular is striking and surprisingly versatile for use in glams! But despite it looking identical for every job, I must keep each individual variant if I want to be able to use it for glam for all jobs. Which means I need to use up five glamour dresser slots for that necklace (as it at least has a Slaying variant for all melee jobs), instead of one. I like the ring as well, so hey, that's another five dresser spaces down...

If we're talking about devs going back and literally removing the tokens (and thus altering how/where to buy the things they were used for), all for it. More uses for Poetics can't be all bad. Lots more incentive to do older content that drops Poetics.

But putting it on the players. Eh. I mean, I get it. But, "obsolete" happens differently for everyone. If you've only bought base game, Alex raids are your endgame. Technically not obsolete, are they?

Regardless, I'd propose there's fat to be trimmed on all sides here. Players need to stop hoarding, sure, but wouldn't hurt for devs to assess what item data could stand to be condensed.

Old primal tokens should be used for pity buy mounts or buying glam, turn-ins, or desynth. They really aren't meant to be hoarded forever, plus they lose value over time. Old raid tokens, savage books, etc as well. You aren't running things like Ivalice or Nier raids or Twintania Extreme everyday for two years. There isn't an unlimited currency capacity either, so why waste it on things that are just used for little bits of time. No reason to allocate always-follow server resources to this.

Beast tribes is always 3x per expansion so they allocated to handle this. It's usually ran daily because of it's leveling system. Generally they also build up what you can buy throughout the expansion.

You're only reinforcing my point there. If Alexander is their endgame, not only should they be spending the tokens as soon as they can afford the gear they want, but they also don't have further expansion raid tokens to worry about.

They could also just do it for the current expansion and then have a 'turn in for clusters' option in 5.58-6.01 like they do every time they rotate tomestones.
That's 7 slots free'd up, and you no longer keep old expansions totems at all because they're useless, instead the drop rate for the mount is increased and unsyncing means you can spa it enough to get either weapons or the mount very quickly.

Along with old primal totems they could also stand to cut old alliance raid coins. Every time I get a Mhachi Farthing (or whatever) I just pitch it.

They could streamline things even more by getting rid of one ring slot, and doubling the stats on rings. They could also get rid of the soul stone slots by removing classes and coming up with new lore expanding on how the jobs are now commonplace, rewording quests as needed. And, I still would prefer they do something like remove half the character slots per account, and in exchange give +1 free retainer per expansion. Maybe make it an opt-in thing, but there's certainly room to reduce their disk space budget.

Better yet, remove every old raid token as each new expansion rolls in and replace them with a universal one just like they do with tomestones.

Haven't played WoW since Legion but back then we maxed out at 476 inventory slots (that's including the reagent bank tab) assuming we were using all 30 slot bags.

Here we've got 560 general use slots plus an additional 820 restricted slots for gear.

We are absolutely the problem because we want to keep hoarding things we aren't using. Players need to learn to manage inventory better.

There are several differences in WoW.

-Alts are free and you can mail between them. That technically grants you thousands of free bag slots, especially with an alt guild bank.
-As far as I know bags are 32 slot now with one unique 34 slot.
-The glamour tab is unlimited.
-There is a further 160 Void Storage slots.
-There aren't things like primal totems and raid books. Gear or mounts simply drop or you use currency in the currency tab.
-Fishing is different and doesn't require a range of bait on hand for multiple big fish windows.
-Crafting is significantly different. Older recipes and materials are largely worthless at max level while many lower level crafts can be relevant here. Many old ores, ingots, cloths, ect are used in higher level crafts or may find use in the next expansion. Endwalker will almost certainly add several hundred more materials.
-Extra bag slots exist in FF14, so it's not a server strain issue. They're just stuck behind a paywall.

Please do proper research before blindly accusing players of bad management.

Personally I don't hold glamour in my bags, I do not keep old totems or raid books. I do not keep ANY material in HQ. I do not keep any materials that can be bought from a vendor, only see use in a few crafts, or are particularly cheap on the MB. I do not keep fish bait. If raw materials are only used in one cloth/ingot/ect, I only keep that cloth/ingot/ect.
I do like to keep a stock of useful materials, so I can craft anything useful at any point for friends, my house, people I see who need help, going for Blessed tools. This has been very convenient on many occasions. I still need to go and gather things all the time though.
I had to give up during ShB and purchase a third retainer. I'm managing fine now, but 2 was impacting my game experience. Poor management is nonsense, this is not WoW. We're due a third free retainer.

That's the funniest thing to me. Defend it how much you like. But how can you say [server limitations] one moment but allow [every] player to buy up to X(not sure how many) and that somehow doesn't cause an issue?

I don't care what dev wizardry is at work behind the scenes. Not do I need to. I'm just a player. All I see, though, is that it somehow works for players who pay more. That's all I need to know.

It IS a server strain issue, in that having all of those inventory slots accessible (constantly loaded) isn't viable at the same time as battle data, so in instanced duties or in world zones, you cannot access your retainers or glamour dresser.
That's why these things are only accessible in towns.
The Chocobo saddlebag is an in-between in that it's available on world zones but not in instanced areas. (which was added in 4.2 btw, so that's our inventory expansion)

That fact that those retainers are predominantly behind a paywall is a separate issue that is neither affected by nor would alter the fact that additional inventory space is a server strain issue.

In other words; people buying "additional inventory space" aren't getting around the "server strain" issue, because retainers are still separate inventories that aren't always accessible.
These are two separate issues that you're mixing together.

Another issue adding more free retainers brings is how many items you can sell, and how many ventures you can send your retainers on, so I don't think "more inventory space needed" is a good enough justification (for them) to give us more free retainers. Plus changing the number of free/paid retainers at this point probably causes issues for those who have been paying for additional retainers. Do their paid retainers convert to free, or they gain more retainers? Do they cancel or refund the retainer fee? etc. (all of which results in a very real loss of income to them, akin to reducing the subscription price, you can call it 'greedy' if you like but it would be a stupid business decision to do this)

Instead, if inventory space should be expanded, then the best candidate for it is probably expanding the Chocobo Saddlebag. That would give us more room available in non-instanced zones, without impacting the content that matters. Although it may still affect lag in world zones which could make hunts and such even worse than they currently are.

(Leaving aside the excellent resource instanciation explanation above...)

Because in many companies, devs don't just get to unilaterally add features if they have a measurable impact on resource use and/or operational cost. And if allowing everyone to have, say, 500 more storage slots universally would add up to X amount more storage and thus require adding Y amount of cost to the server budget, that can be hard to convince the company's finance team is a good change; they just see numbers, and they'd see one number going up there where they don't want it to.

Whereas if you can sell the 500 more storage slots so that the extra Y cost is covered by those sales, the finance team doesn't flail around in a panic about increasing the costs. (At least in my own experience from having worked in the industry, and still being in touch with many former co-workers and old friends who still are suffering through crunch time.)

It's dumb, yes. But a lot of corporate politics behind-the-scenes in game development boils down to what I would define as "dumb". And based on my own experiences, I would not be shocked if that was exactly the logic there behind making additional retainers purchasable but not just giving everyone 10 retainers for free. "Not everyone needs this much storage, and the ones who do will pay for the server bills by buying it!"
