AST and WHM's oGCD shields are more effective mitigation tools than SCH's slowcasted and expensive GCD Adloquium as they can be weaved on a whim to react to an incomming tankbuster. Meanwhile, SCH's oGCD regens and excog are better pure healing abilities than WHM's GCDs. I figure what Dearche is trying to say is, what Devs label the healers as and what they actually do are two separate things.

Sorry if I wasn't clear there, but SCH is the worst specifically as a shield healer. It's hands down the best as a pure healer despite the label as the #1 and OG shield healer.

Adlo is limited in use due to all the limitations put on it (catalyze, and overall kinda weak without recitation, which is only good once every 90s, compared to WHM's Divine Benisin which, while weaker, is instant, free, and on a 30s CD, in addition to not bothering with a heal). And Succor? Really? That 200 potency shield is pathetic compared to just doing a flat AOE heal that costs far less in both time and MP, or is far more powerful.

And that's only comparing it to WHM. AST has it far better when it comes to putting on shields quickly and reliably. Not to mention that Noct Benefic is both faster and more powerful than an Adlo without Recitation. And that's in addition to the fact that AST actually has oGCD shields while in Diurnal Sect! And that's on top of the fact that Celestial Intersection is almost as good as Divine Benison, on top of having the same 30s CD!

Seriously, Benison and Intersection alone make both WHM and AST better as shield healers than SCH. That's how sad SCH's position is.

If SE was serious about making actual proper shield healers, SCH would both need Adlo turned into an instant cast shield with no heal, and have something like turn Excog into a shield that simply covers all missing HP up to 50%. Then we'll be talking about actually fixing some things.

There are some tricks you can use to make scholar better shield healer currently that are neat. I wish more healers had the same flexibility and learning curve that scholar has even now after it was changed.

Deployed Adlo shields especially under the effect of Dissipation are quite strong and with clever usage of Deployment you practically have ogcd shielding ability. Galvanize stacks with Consolation too for even more potent shielding! The downside of course is cannot be used with dissipation.

Is the boss transitioning into a phase where they cannot be targeted or forcing you to move? Adlo lasts for thirty seconds so Adlo yourself while there is nothing else to be doing, if well timed it will probably still be on you for the raidwide. Now you can weave a strong party shield by deploying your pre-existing Adlo even during uptime phases.

Is the tank doing big chungus pulls? Perfect! Pre-pull Adlo the tank then Adlo yourself while you are running by slidecasting. Now, when the tank loses Adlo you can deploy yours giving you a nice ogcd shield for helping mitigate big pulls.

While Excog is better to use with recitation there is some most amusing stuffs you can do by recitating Adlo onto a Dark Knight who then uses The Blackest Night on top of Consolation. Should the shields absorb all of the damage one attack does that would apply a debuff it will not apply the debuff.

More ogcd shielding options would a happy scholar make for this Lala over here. I can only imagine all of the tricky stuff I might be able to figure out.

That's all fine but Deployment Tactics has a 180s CD. Also it's a waste to use Adlo on yourself to deploy later considering the high MP cost of Adlo and how it's healing gets wasted on you. Deploying shields off yourself is a clever situational tactic I admit and certainly feels great, but it is also a very inefficient move that you get to rarely pull off, compared to Benison/Celestial intersection/Opposition that have 30s CDs/1 min CD and cost no MP.

This is exactly why I prefer noct AST over SCH. From my casual standpoint, I guess SCH is probably superior on statics or high end content, but as someone who only does mostly roulettes, noct shields are far more reliable and efficient and truly does feel like a shield healer

SCH is better in statics because it's a better raw healer than the other two, and at the same time it drops more DPS at the same time thanks to how the division between spells and oGCD is done. This is the single biggest issue with WHM and AST when it comes to class balance, which is sad because there's some easy solutions to it.

Simply put, balance their offence and healing between the spells and oGCDs so that healing doesn't mean your DPS drops like a rock.

MP is not really issue in FF14 so that part does not bother me. I remember being kinda shocked at how little manana matters in FF14 land compared to other mmos. Everything else you said makes most sense I just silently hope we are not getting another trough of easily spammed ogcd spells. I do not want scholar to transmogrify into a clone of the other healers even though it may probably happen. :(

Editing to clarify because English is not the first language and I did say more ogcds would make me a happy scholar. I wish for more interesting ogcd spells that require planning to properly execute.

Optimization is such a pain in the ass honestly. Bending over backwards to cast yet another Broil/Glare isn't what I'd call satisfying. And that is pretty much it. Optimized healer gameplay means you cast 9 times your Damage spell instead of 6 or 7 between Biolysis/Dia. It means you use less variety of spells and abilities and instead use the highest DPS gain which is Broil/Glare X times in a row. It's such a tedious chore for the average player.

Juggling healing and damage is fine. Juggling resources is fine. Choosing approriate options for movement and weaving is fine. Optimizing does indulge in those things, but what you have to show for it is just a few extra casts of your boring generic blue blast of energy.

Your reward for appropriately using your resources should be a big flashy spell. Something strong and satisfying. Blood Lily is definitely flashy but any person that gives the spell any thought can see how it's just a compensation tool to give back lost DPS. It does have a sense of build up and that is great.

SCH on the other hand has no build up. It's just broil after broil.

Even AST has something to show off, even if it feels rather offputing when seals don't align.

As awful as clipping your Dot feels, when it comes to shielding, WHM still does it better than SCH, who has to use the GCD to apply a shield. Scholar does technically have an oGCD shield- Consolation. But it has far more hoops to jump through than Benison, that much is true. Man Whispering Dawn has always made me narrow my eyes at how Squeenix designs WHM. I remember when Squeenix cut Medica 2's potency in half and doubled its duration in ARR (finally reverted that change this expac). They said it was too strong giving the same amount of healing in half the time, so they stretched it out from 15 to 30s. Meanwhile Eos was furiously twerking in the background, having the same total healing potency in 21 seconds, while also being even better than an oGCD since it didn't require a weave. That wasn't too strong.

Complaining about WHM getting an oGCD shield when SCH barely has any is valid. It's just a little late to the Stole My Identity party.

You were correct, there was barely any healer representation in the LL. This is annoying. And also something they've done consistently since we proved them wrong about SB lilies.

I gave up on expecting anything after the big ShB live letter where healers were not only a footnote at the bottom of the great hour long DPS and Tankapalooza, but they mumbled and skipped even that footnote.

Shield healing as an identity in this game seems to revolve entirely around weak aoe shields and their use seems to be limited to a small handful of raidwides on low ilv prog and harder Savage/Ultimate bosses. For some reason SE insists on splitting aoe shields into a heal/shield split, which often makes pre-shielding waste the heal component and only apply a pathetic 180-200 potency. These are almost worthless outside of when you need them to live, therefore shield healers are given a wide pure-heal toolkit to function in all the other content in the game.

This is why Shield vs Pure is actually Pure with Extra Utility vs Pure. SCH and AST are basically WHM's except they have aoe shields for fatal raidwides and WHM doesn't. That's the distinction.

I'm interested to see how SE plans to address this going into Endwalker. Making a true Shield vs Pure distinction requires completely changing how shield healing plays.

But like whm noct ast and sch have skill to increase their heal spell pots so the shield can be quite huge no? I usually neu sect then pop cu and helio shield b4 raid aoe owie and get a good chunk which would make that a 400 pot or more shield? or sch I guess do their serpah then ill spell and crit ado though am sure unlike noct ast that can do this fast vs light speed its more prep and time consume on sch end. Abilities that increase shields generally increase Pure Heals too. So even if you can buff your shields with a Reci Adlo Spread combo or such, if you didn't need it to survive chances are you could just drop one Soil or Indom after the raidwide, which keeps the party alive equally well for much less resources. Consolation is a decent ability, but you have to jump through hoops to get similar total potency to a single Diurnal AST oGCD. In your example where you saved a BLM below 50% with shields, an Essential Dignity or Synastry+Benefic would catch him just fine too. Shields just don't serve enough purpose unless you're playing really safe (early prog) or you're definitely going to die without them.

Considering Noct is your favourite spec because of it's shields, wouldn't you prefer it if shields were actually a strong core part of your toolkit? More pure shields, larger pure raidwide aoe shields or shields that triggered heals or regens only after they popped, in exchange for some (not all) of your pure healing (examples). So that the class rewarded you for predicting and preparing for incoming damage.

We can only pray what ew do, am feeling rdm more each day so..will just be abit paranoid I know at times if I feel whoever heals whos not a friend of mine may make me vercure at times since I know 80% of healers will dps, ofc I do not expect heal botting me at 80 and above but like below 50% and i see no type of heal i may ver cure lol sorry, plds are guilty of it too and it did use to bug me as a healer but now I see why they may clem and dont get mad anymore.

Difference being that WHM doesn't need Temperance to feel like a pure healer, whereas SCH has a weird gap between 50 and 80 where shielding falls to the sideline in favor of fairy and aetherflow ogcds - they don't even really need to shield, and that's supposed to be the job's niche.

Same could be said of WHM with Temperance. I remember back when WHM had stoneskin 2 and Divine Seal as abilities below 40 I think it was which did similar things as an aoe shield (long cast) and healing buff.

More on topic, I'm guessing live letter about jobs will be about sage and possibly AST with nothing on SCH or WHM. Hopefully for both neither gets gutted like they have been the last 2 expansions,.

I mentioned this in another thread, but it's possible to make shield healers about shielding missing health, rather than shielding above the cap as their basis. SE seems to be adamant about preventing us from being able to get high levels of eHP, but unless if your shields can be pretty strong, it'll generally feel bad to play a true shield healer.

This combined with maybe migrating HOTs to shield healers and pure healers just have high power and efficient normal heals with some other sort of limitation would make true shield healers both more interesting to play, and not too difficult for new players to pick up.

There's barely anything left to be gutted at this point. Losing the DoT we've got will barely make a difference, though losing our Broil and equivalents will cause an immediate mass migration unless if SE includes a healing or support rotation just as complex and fun as some of the best DPS...that can be done at all times of a fight without feeling like we're just pressing buttons for the sake of being busy.

Personally, such a thing is close to impossible, and SE has repeatedly proven that they are terrible at making interesting and fun but balanced healers.

The overstretched job design team they have is clearly disinterested in putting any effort into healers and Yoshi appears to be entirely unwilling to hire. As good as an expansion as SHB was, E8S absolutely destroyed my love for healing in this game.

a solid ask! i apparently liked it previously on my initial read of the thread. hopefully it'll get actually looked at, but with their history of softball-if-at-all, i'm not going to kid myself.

i tossed a few of my own questions in, but 58/201 (as of posting) pages in ain't gonna get many eyes for likes--which is a weird metric for them to choose by btw, since that's going to be heavily limited to the front and current/back ends of the thread (tapering down as interest wanes or people get theirs outta the way and wait for the LL to happen)

sadly, while bowmage was rolled back, AST got three lobotomies and players who enjoyed original MNK and SMN were basically just told to shove off entirely--there is no alternative or recourse, those playstyles simply do not exist anymore in ff14. so hopes aren't high.

They totally reworded the question which was about the entire healer gameplay to be just about raid. Welp. Way to ignore the issue and not have to talk about it

Healer question was mentioned.

Summarized: Healer enjoyment to heal more is only to be taken at a higher level. You can't enjoy more healing intensity or a slightly more diversified DPS for regular level content if you're not a raider.

If they said the same thing for DPS where your DPS rotations for the majority of the players who don't play high-end raids, then they'll see how ridiculous it sounds for majority of the healers who don't always play at that high level. A big downer.
