Perhaps Dalamud is a planet inhabited by another species which will be introduced in 2.0?
i dont think you see swords on dalamud.
SPOILER!!!
anyone rembers the conversation between the garlean silverarmor and red armor guys? the silverarmor guy was talking about controlling dalamud with the help of some kind of Allagian tombstones (if i remember correctly). dont this stuff on dalamud looks like crosses? maybe this things are these tombstones.
Dalamud IS 2.0
The spires are the devs building the new world spaces, and the plot twist will be, when Dalamud destroys Eorzea we all land on Dalamud and 2.0 starts from there, with all the finished world spaces ready for us.
And to all of the people making the Death Star jokes I am very VERY disappointing in you! Not a single "That's no moon... it's a space station." joke and it is so perfect here! Pick it up guys... your slipping.
I wonder... they will use the ffXIII's ending again....
it has something huge falling down and a crystal thing!
But I'll say guardian pops and save us! Use the force of crystal.
... and also give me a coincounter's fluffy-wiggly tail. /clap
I was going to post that myself.
Spoiler warning:
Hydaelyn was called Gran Pulse in the first Astral Era and everyone ran away to Bhunivelze just as Noel caused the 1st Umbral Era by killing Etro. The nature of the world changed as chaos fluxed in to warp space-time, survivors found new names for stuff and XIII-3 became XIV.
Maybe...

Didn't bother to read thread, so sorry if I repeat someone.
Short version:
Your moon dog is Fenrir coming before 2.0 & SMN will be a job in 2.0.
And I'm excited!
My thoughs are:
Dalamud is a giant metalic control-remote weapon.
On the letter is mentioned we will see the new weapon of empire but for "see" it can mean we can clearly see what is dalamud and not a "weapon", machine, some type of mob, etz.. imperials may use.
In addittion in some old Company quest from Ul'dah (don't remember which, take care spoiler):
Cid appears whispering that Imperials are trying to use Meteor on us.
With thist said is a bit weird that Imperials are using Dalamud to crush our territory but they keep attempting to "invade" or attack us. It looks silly if they get hit too... However since Darkhold instance raid was released, on quest related to this instance and some "live events" (invasions) we are told that imperial are invading and installing some "devices" (little machines) over the zones.
What this can mean? Well guessing the point Dalamud is a fire weapon (let's say a misil so we can understand) it need to have some aiming procedure or it can fall over the Imperial region too. So we can supose those devices are nothing but target points where the Dalamud (Meteor) should hit.
Also if you check the logo, you can speculate over many theorys on what those spikes are but what if they are some "antenna"? So far we saw Imperial are heavy machine technology based so... why not?
So here it is another speculate theory! Have fun, thanks for your time.
Some type of Aether crystal/catalyst was sealed in Dalamund by the advanced civilization. The crystal allowed them to harness advanced technology, but it reacted in strange ways when exposed to the natural Aether. It has such a strong influence it goes Primals to go mad. The crystal eventually brings about an Umbral Era before it was sent into the sky. When it makes contact with Erozea, it will cause the natural aether to go haywire again causing mutations in the land, surrounding areas, and its people.
I could get behind this idea. Nael van Darnus of Garlemald pretty much told Gaius that he could guarantee that Dalamud wouldn't land on their lands if they could acquire the Allaghan tombs, so I'm guessing that the Empire is planning on bringing down Dalamud, but they pretty much want to scour Eorzea for the tombs because that's pretty much what happened the first time they tried to use meteor.
I get that the Empire tried this trick once before, but they didn't know enough about the technology and ended up bombing one of their own joints (read: Bozja Citadel), because they didn't know about the Allaghan technology (the tombs) that would assist them with guiding meteor to a particular point of contact. So, now that they know about the tombs, they're scouring Eorzea for them, which is why I think they keep ending up in dungeons (Darkhold, Cutter's Cry, Aurum Vale). The Empire is trying to excavate and find these tombs so that Dalamud won't land on them again. Eorzea had the tombstones already so when they tried to bring down Meteor it landed right on their heads.
Why they are so adamant about using Meteor to begin with, I feel like it's just House Darnus or Nael van Darnus being absolutely nuts from the jump about his technology that he wants to "wipe the slate clean and start anew" much in the manner of Emperor Gestahl and Kefka in FF6. The Empire wants to expand itself and naturally the Emperor is willing to take any means necessary to do so. With Nael van Darnus spouting his crazy stuff in the old man's ear, of course they're willing to try again with reassurance that "if we have the right parts, it could work!".
But aside from that... speculatively thinking. I think that the Alleghan tombstones are ON Dalamud to keep it in orbit and out of the hands of people exactly like the Empire. That's why there are crosses and things on it. So Nael van Darnus is full of shenanigans from the start, I feel, because he just wants to wipe everything out so that House Darnus can rule the Empire and everything. The guy has a silver tongue. But that's just my two cents...

Hm... I wonder how this thread went from a seemingly interesting, speculative discussion into a scrapbook of sorts...
no...... you got YOUR answer HERE!!!!!!!: :P

If you wanna make it good use Cids smile from FFXI that thing made people die.
What if dalmund was created to house some kind of evil that gets released when it crashes into the planet... :)
Edit:
I see others have thought the same thing. 1.22 and 1.23 will prove to be interesting :)
I hope SE don't start reading this thread then panicking because the real answer is "yeah it's kinda just a moon that's going to slam into the earth..."
To be honest so long as the repetitive maps get burned to the ground I won't care... but it would be awesome to have a smexy plot twist :3
I don't know why that shit was so funny to me....
There is a ton of speculation... but as for facts...

So I randomly was clicking around in the unending journey and happened to play the cutscene for the twin adder quest "Two Vans are Better than One" and saw this:

It's the same as we see in the sky, but it's a way closer image. Good stuff. Cropped from 1920x1080
