Unfortunately the armor design team... drew inspiration for the Dragoon armor from Dark Knight armor, perhaps even more so than they did from Dragoon armor...

The traditional curved armet found on Cecil's (pre-redesign) helmet that is featured in Yoshida's rendition of the dark knight, as well as the chocobo one above, and generally associated with pre-Nomura era dark knights, is actually the fashion of the Dragoon's artifact helmet.

A face mask similar to the Cecil redesign or a full helm similar to the one worn by Golbez (both feat. in the OP's post) would probably be the most desirable direction. Either way they're going to have to go solid black, with perhaps red highlights, because if they go into blue or purple as with Cecil, it's going to look far too similar to the Dragoon, imho.

And please, don't make Dark Knight "unholy". (; ; ) DRK isn't necessarily evil, just self-destructive and wholly bent on the attack, rather than defense. Please don't tie 'em up with demons. (>X_X) I really don't want that... please!

A Magic Knight kinda thing would definitely be cool. I'd also like it if they had abilities tied to parrying as well, DRK Cecil was tankish in a way. :x

I always wanted to play a Dark Knight class and I think this would be a wonderful idea. could branch off from the gladiator along next to the paladin class.
using a scythe though? I dunno, I'm used to Dark Knights using 1-handed sword and/or shields.

So no, that's Cecil's sprite, the FFXIV armor design team just seemed to really like that early dark knight helm, so much so that they couldn't wait for the job to be added to the game.

Unholy isn't necessarily evil either. Dark Knight uses Dark/Umbral damage, the opposite of Light/Astral damage, which is associated with spells like "Holy." So inherently, Dark Knight is "unholy."

Dark Knight is by this turn, only "evil" if your world-view is black and white. From a roleplaying/lore perspective, you needn't be evil to be a dark knight, just willing to tap into a power considered "dark" or "unholy" by the commonfolk. However, Thaumaturges are known to work with magics both holy and unholy and at least in Ul'dah not entirely shunned for this activity.

It's not wholly unbelievable thus, that a Dark Knight could be a perfectly swell adventurer/adventuress, but that some might fear them by the nature of their power?

its that Cecil's 2nd outfit in dissidia 2 well it is pretty cool. and yes you are right Drk are not all evil some could view it as a better means to protect. the way i see it is just that Dark is pld without the limitations to hold you back.



Cause Drkscan make the decisions that paladins cant. So they are the heros that Eorzea needs.......... but not the ones it deserves!

I didn't know flat characters existed in real life... Cars have also lead to many, terrible, horrible deeds.

Humorous black & white worldview aside, there's no way Dark Knight cannot fall under the evil category for you then, unless it's well... not a dark knight.

Fairness and equality are noble and admirable goals. Murdering men and women to accomplish them is not.

The intention was white, the deed was black. This happens routinely in every human life. You wish to spare a friend's feelings, so you tell them a lie, and later, the pain is worse, for having been told, and believing, the untruth.

I find the more interesting characters in novels and media are the principled ones, who aren't swept up in the wake of "for a greater good". It's so easy, almost natural, to fall into that line of thinking...

And it's taken millions of lives.

I'd prefer not to enter a philosophical debate, because generally, people's minds are already made up before even entering these sorts of discussions. However, your examples are only of deranged dictators.

There are many situations in history where a small evil was done to avert a bigger one. Any principle or ideal may be used in a negative or positive way, just as any tool, technology, what have you. There are also shades of gray, at least in most people's worlds.


That said.


Dark Knight. Light and Dark, Black and White, it's the same principle.

If your world view is black and white, dark knight is inherently evil. They harm themselves in order to defeat their opponents. Would your world views support your country arming their military with weapons that harm their own soldiers, if that meant they could win battles more effectively?

Dark magic, self-harm to increase damage are tools, tools that would to a common person be associated with "evil." My point is the user is not inherently evil themselves. SE is not going to cast your character as a villain in the dark knight story.

Oh what I would give to see DRK's AF armor in XIV based on that....

Aesthetics aside, Two-handed swords, some drain spells as well as darkness/umbral damage strikes that become stronger when you combo into them. NO ELEMENTAL MAGIC OR ANYTHING RELATED TO ELEMENTAL MAGIC. I'd focus them more on drains and damage. Or perhaps tool DRKs to be somewhat anti-caster (cast interrupts, debuffs that increase cast times or increase chances of being interrupted) while keeping them up to par with DRG, MNK and whoever else is in the front.

The latter might work, as DRK's theme in XI was a job that was anti-arcana.

But FFX-2 is one of the better games in the series. Not even kidding. That battle system was perfect.

Aside from the opening scene, which was almost a humorous nod, I never really felt the Charlie's Angels vibe. 9/10 people who refuse to acknowledge the game's existence seem to have never actually played it, or played past the first hour.

It's worth playing if only because it's a modern FF with a decent job system.

i tried to play it i just couldnt get into it im sorry. i didnt like that you could only play 3 characters i like variety. Yuna i only like cause she was a summoner but now that she was i didnt like her. Rikku i never used all that much in 10. Pain is a lame female version of auron. But back on Hand Dark Knight needs its own line of weapons im for 2 handed weapons like greatssword or ball and chain

I think his point is that a scythe was never made nor meant for combat, thus makes a poor weapon for any combat class. To this day I have never heard of scythes as we think of them (drk, grim reaper) used as anything but a farmer's tool. Yeah farmers used them for lack of any other options, but they are not designed for combat. Of course this is fiction so anything goes, but I would much prefer DRK use a classic weapon. A scythe just doesn't seem to fit in with the lore imo.

Since they aim at making DRK an alternative job on GLA, I would agree. Giving DRK access to a greatsword "and" a scythe would be giving too much and will go back to the FFXI days of one being better than the other and needless debate.

as long as drk only gets ONE weapon this time around. I hated having to switch weapons >_> double the expenses. Great Sword or the double bladed sword. not a bad idea...I would honestly like to see DRK as a group debuff, crowd control, and draining DD. maybe even an off tank to compliment PLD, that would be cool, give them some utility... I don't know, I wrote a pretty long comment on the ff:xi forums about what I wanted drk to be on here lol. and had asked for other DRK's opinions.

If DRK is pussified by hittin like a little flamer. I will quit this game until they fix DRK. No Fixy DRK, no FFXIV fo'me.

I would love to see Yoshi-P draw up a DRK design even if I had to wait months for it to release. I seen the DRG image way before 1.21 and just knew that would be my DRK in action one day.

On another note, if DRK does come from GLA, will it be a Tank?

My favorite role is Tanking and my favorite job is usually a DD, so it would be like killing two birds with one stone. Either way I really want a Demon race Dark Knight.
