We had 8v8v8. It got removed because they want to stick to a 72man map design.

Huttball is and always has been complete absolute garbage, but it's only gotten worse as the game's life cycle has progressed (and consequentially the balance got worse and worse). All it takes is one competent tank and healer to get the ball and, unless the enemy team coordinates together extremely well, you're basically guaranteed to score. It's even more guaranteed if the team that gets the ball gets it picked up by a competent Fury Marauder or Concealment Operative while having a competent tank & healer. So, frankly, I think Huttball is the last thing that XIV should be taking any ideas from. The PvP in this game already has more issues than it can count, let's not bring in garbage ideas from SWTOR of all games to make things even worse.
There used to be a Feast 8v8 mode but they removed it since people weren't queuing for it outside of events like GARO.
The PvP playerbase in FFXIV, if there's no bonus incentive for anything else, will always gravitate towards the queue with the shortest queue times. There's a reason why individual Frontline map queues were locked and put in a map rotation.
People did queue for 8v8s, it's just people complained that how can it be called training when it wasn't the slightest bit relatable to the ranked mode. 8v8 map was bigger, more boxes spawned, playstyle in an 8v8 was just totally different and coordination was meaningless etc, also can you imagine 8 people all having access to a single focus countdown quickchat now? Lol.
In hindsight, we regret it. 8v8 is the kind of small scale pvp mode this game needs right now. We didn't know what we had until it was gone :(
So far PVP seems dead, i barely get a queue to pop and i can't queue for multiple things. I have recently moved servers to EU from NA and the queues seem the same tbh. There was a time when the queue popped quick when the exp reward was really high but that got nerfed.
There needs to be better incentives, other MMOS have quite a rich pvp reward system which encourages replay value. Also i don't think its popular enough to keep only doing 72 player matches so they should reduce the game types to much lower.
I hope SE plan to change pvp to make it more enticing, as i do love PVP in this game but i hardly get to play it.
It's not the rewards. People like the glams, people ask where's that mount from and whatnot regularly.
The problem is PvP, mechanically, absolutely blows and there are a lack of casual small scale modes. The balance doesn't have to be good and the rewards don't have to be amazing - it just has to be fun and for many, it is not enjoyable.
I have no problem getting matches during prime-time.
The daily queue should remain active through Patch 5.3 and onward. The old maps will be back in rotation and people can continue working on the achievements for those. Not to mention all the potential new players that will be incentivized to join thanks to the ARR revamp and expansion of the Free Trial.
Highlighted for emphasis. I think this is the biggest failing of the 72-person 24v24v24 game mode. It can be very frustrating, because you can personally do very well, but you still lose because even just 1 team throws the game by picking the wrong 2v1s. And the same can even be said for wins--you won, because another team misplayed! It's not always the case, but wins that you feel were unearned happen enough.
And it's a shame, because I think the baseline mechanics of PvP in this game are great. No level discrepancies, no stat differences based on gear, streamlined class kits. It just needs better game modes. 8v8, or even 16v16. King of the Hill games are fine, but add in some Assault or Capture the Flag type games, too!
I honestly have a whole lot to say after reading the thread. It's a bit bothersome to hold my thoughts in. However, I'll wait until next patch to see how things turn out.
1] Remerge DCs - Consider if it should be top 100 or 200
Keeps competition higher, Queues faster, Different opponents and jobs faced over matches
2] Better Server ticks in feast instances
Responsiveness has always been an issue higher ticks would solve a lot of feasts bugs and clunky feel.
3] Add old maps / Make a new arena
We've had the crystal grounds for how long now? Years? It's extremely stale looking at the same blue and yellow map its time for old maps in rotation and even a fresh new map (and yes even the big round infamous "mario kart" crystal ground map!)
4] Wolf collar shop having more rewards
There needs to be more incentive for players who didnt get or dont want the top 100 reward... This can come with brand new glams / mounts / weapons even the option to buy special dyes or pvp style housing items every few seasons, most pvp players who play consistently have an overabundance of collars with nothing to buy
5] Mount Reskin BGM
This is minor however I think it would make the mount more unique and worth getting for those who go after the 1st version of the Top 100 mount for the reskin version to have the feast culling theme "Dangertek" added to it, Most pvpers who get the 1st mount usually aren't very motivated to go for the reskin since not much changes compared to glam reskins.
I hope that Nascent Flash change applies to PvP, but I'm afraid it won't since it wasn't included in the PvP-specific patch notes.
The way it works now, not needing a target, works well for The Feast. It would be at a disadvantage to use it without a target, as then you are missing out on healing/DR. With Rival Wings, however, it can be much harder to secure a party member to use it on, as even if you have a coordinated team there's just a lot of reasons for splitting up often, especially when your fourth needs to grab a new rig or is operating an Oppressor.
Hey, so I wanted to crosspost this from another thread I was just saying this in, seeing as this is our PVP megathread. I highly suggest taking your ideas and concerns to the JP forums in a constructive manner. It isn’t our turf, however they have been very hospitable and communicative with the comments I have left in their forums. I feel like due to the higher volume of traffic on their JP forums, Square is bound to pay more attention to those threads, so I highly encourage you guys to take your issues there as well, in a polite, cordial, and subdued manner. You will have to post in Japanese though, so I suggest taking your time in composing your translations, and provide your original English source as well. Make it clear that you are using translation software.
Tips for Google Translate: Write short, straightforward sentences. Try not to use compound sentences, similar to writing like a caveman. Additionally, try to browse their forums with page translation to pick out their keywords they use for niche PVP terms. They won’t necessarily translate clearly into English, but you can infer what they are talking about, and then use that translated phrase in your English —> Japanese translations. I forget what keywords I discovered back when I was posting.
TL;DR Keep it short and sweet and your translation will get your point across.
This seems to be their main PVP megathread.
