"Cab fare?" - also Square Enix
I jest, in part, but... what is supposed to make XIV the "best" MMO let alone by any "definite" metric? And just how good is the "best" supposed to be when the competition may scarcely be worth even calling "good-ish"?

Eh I don't know if it's the best. I do really enjoy it but most of the content is brain dead easy and there are many features that are common in MMOs that are really limited here or just plan missing.
Well if the market for sub MMOs is small then its not wonder that its up there or maybe even one of the best. Not really that much of a victory if there is barely anything there to challenge it.
It does quite some things right but it fails badly (imo) in other important aspects...like housing for everyone, glamour wardrobe, inventory space and yes even the character customization is quite limited.
I wholeheartedly agree that FF XIV is the best MMO around! I started playing near the tail-end of ARR when HW was close to release, and I immediately fell in love. I was a huge FF fan before playing XIV, having played 7, 8, 9 and 10 beforehand. I was stoked to try an MMO version of one of my favorite game franchises, and I haven't regreted it one bit! I even convinced a couple of friends of mine to play the game as well.
Dude, this game allows you to level all jobs you want on one character, regardless of gender. Not only do some mmos limit you to just one fighting style, but some jobs are genderlocked AND race restricted. This includes Blade and Soul and Black Desert. BDO actually has it worse; you can't have a male Dark Knight or a female Berserker. I think FFXIV is doing well in that regard. And even if the game does have Black Desert graphics, the graphics aren't mediocre.
Then run dungeons and raids at minimum ilvl.
Dare I say that FFXIV is the only MMO in the market that constantly pump out content in a three month time frame? I can't think of any other MMO even WoW, ESO or GW2 that are very consistent in its content update like this game. So props to the Dev team for that.
The nostalgia is there definitely sticking to lore and yes the game is fun.
I like all the new and returning cast from previous final fantasy game and hope it continues even hope one day to see sephiroth pop his face into the game.
though I hear the FFXI reboot is being made I don't know if it will put a dent into this MMO but I remember FFXI being very community friendly and that's what makes the game fun, FFXIV is fun but some of the community actually make that experience crappy sometimes.
When I played FFXI with cousin nobody seemed to call you out for gear everyone had their own setup people were having fun that's what I think makes a great game.
It seems you are placing your faith in Bloodlust too much..UE4 can be just as bad if not worse than UE3 in the hands of a bad developer and thats exactly what BL is.
BnS is far too pay2win to even be an enjoyment for newer players, and in general the community is 20x worse than FFXIVs will ever be. People dont welcome you.
BnS offers so little compared to FFXIV,the only good thing is the combat. the story stopped being good patches ago,idk what you still enjoy to it. its setting is a K-Drama and a predictable one too
and thats coming from someone who plays BnS since 2013 in various regions etc. NEW Cosmetics are all locked behind rng boxes or trove. They dont sell new cosmetics for direct purchase on Cash Shop anymore either.
The BnS maps are truly empty compared to FFXIV. Yes character customization is better. but overall FFXIVs only flaws comparing it to BnS is character customization and combat.
I legit replaced BnS with FFXIV at february when i tried this game. I still play BnS ofc and ill never quit it due to how much ive invested but yeah FFXIV offers almost the same things as BnS but more and much better.
FFXIV is probably the best game on the market for casual play.
For non-casual play a game where PvP is a minigame and the only meaningful difficulty in PvE is for exactly 8 players is not what I'm looking for.
FFXIV is definitely the best mmo for me. I have tried others, but they just dont last (there has only been one other that I made it to 50, Aura Kingdom, my account is probably gone now however), though I have only tried free ones. Ffxiv is the only pay to play mmo I have played.
I also love that I can play with a controller. I have difficulty playing with mouse and keyboard because I have small hands. And that there are plenty of mounts I can get through gameplay unlike others where most mounts are bought with real money.
14 has its moments.
If you like raiding with more than 8 people, challenging single group content, or meaningful PvP though, you arent getting that here.
Its a little frustrating to have to have multiple MMO subscriptions (I cheat and just play EQ on test) to enjoy the things I like in a MMO (Crafting, Raiding, high-end group content).
Where 11 innovated on what its predecessors had done, 14 went "THEME PARK IT IS! MMO's are ezez" and came to an abrupt stop. As much as Yoshi and crew did a LOT to get the game into a significantly better state, they arent exactly trying to innovate anything.
Far from the best but, it's a good one.
So tired of hearing this. It doesn't copy WoW, It copies the MMO formula and it does so because it works. I believe the phrase is "Don't fix what is not broken." In the same breath, I believe all MMO's and not just FFXIV suffer from lack of innovation because it's probably terrifying trying to branch out and do new things when you have no idea if it's going to succeed or crash and burn. They know what works so they stick with the standard formula and occasionally do small changes to other types of content to see how it does and how to improve it. Diadem/Eureka is literally a example of that. (It's probably not where they want it yet but i believe it's making progress)
FFXIV is by no means perfect and has it's issues but it's still up there with the best. I agree with the customization being expounded upon (What I wouldn't give for SE's character customization to be on the level of BDO's, they are the king of character designs and customization.) I don't really agree with a improved graphics engine, while it would be great and would like to see it it's not really holding the game back.
All those other F2P games, especially the chinese and Korean MMO's only selling point is their graphics, the rest of the game is either bogged down by a sea of micro-transactions or the grind is cranked up to a 11 because it's the only way they get players to stay long term due to their lack of actual game content. I'll always, always take actual content over graphics.
While calling it the best is subjective. There's no denying it's success especially considering the MMO genre is almost always in a state of stagnation. The dev's have passion for the game and it shows and not many games today have that. It's still my favorite MMO and will be for the foreseeable future.
It's the absolute best for me, because it's the only one that offers everything I've ever dreamed for in an MMORPG:
+Great graphics with very attractive characters.
+Tons of glamours to play with.
+This might seem silly, but being able to sit on chairs around the world, and having actual cool places to sit in like Limsa's restaurant, is a very important detail for me that most MMORPG lack.
+Characters turning their heads to look at each other. Something so simple that makes they look alive and aware of each other!
+Characters can even change their standing and sitting poses, and move their lips when they speak! What other game offers this kind of personalisation?!
+Emotes you can combine with head movement and facial expressions, coupled with the best camera system I've ever seen. All that helps me take all sort of creative screens and recreate stories, and I LOVE that.
+Housing, another creative tool.
+Game gets updates very often. Updates are fun (to me).
+Getting good gear is not an impossible feat. Game doesn't punish you with tons of mandatory, mindless farming and RNG like other games have punished me in the past. Thus, FFXIV has felt safe and not toxic for me, like fresh air.
The only things I might appreciate more from other games are the action combat system (albeit I don't dislike the FFXIV one), and a wider character creation with face and body sliders. But these alone don't make the other MMORPGs better, for they lack absolutely everything else. Most MMORPGs lack creative and social aspects, and merely focus on combat; there's nothing more to do other than combat. I tend to find that boring after a few weeks, no matter how nice the battle system is. If we add the P2W elements, and that each of the very little fashion options they might offer tend to cost more than a month's sub in FFXIV, you get the unhappy picture.
I think FFXIV has spoiled me too much *laughs*. It's given me so many things that now I won't be able to find any other game that's half as good.
It's a really good online game but as an MMORPG is rather terrible.
FFXIV is one of the best currently around. Others would be ESO and......err.....well something.
The offerings are pretty thin, but people will always have their own favourites.
I love how the game servers are not divided with channels or "shards" and all cities in the game has a lot of players walking around.
This feels like the mmorpg i want to play, not a single player game with some multiplayer features.
The only things keeping XIV from being perfect to me are:
1. The ToS enforcement is pure trash and people can get away with both harassment and cheating regularly.
2. Virtually no mid/hardcore content for small groups. The later floors of PotD/HoH are basically the only semi-difficult four player content in the game.
3. PvP is...hit or miss. Some people seem to enjoy it, but for a lot of others the only thing that pushes them to get involved are the rewards which causes problems when said rewards don't even necessarily require a win to be obtained.
What bothers me is that if you try to correct someone they might get offended and report you and guess what ull get banned or warned.
Same if you turn down someones offer for something? Feels offended > warned or banned.
This is really getting out of hand in a way. They should look into things more and not just "he got offended, ill ban the person"
I got reported by this incredibly toxic person in Eureka who was pulling mobs away from a light farming party on purpose, breaking our chain and trolling everybody there, after I called them out in chat. I went to jail and have a warning on my account now, and they're probably fine. There is definitely some kind of a disturbing reverse abuse trend going on with the reporting. To think you can lose the account you've worked for years on because a toxic person reported YOU, is very disheartening. All Mog Station purchases, all hours invested gone, because of mods not looking into the situation thoroughly.
I disagree with several of your points including comparing the game to WoW where they (ActiBlizz) have taken giant steps BACKWARDs in term of QoL. Genderlock in particular cant really be considered a flaw as opposed to oh falling through the world and dying and being forced to take 10 minutes rez sickness and costly gear damage such as still happens in WoW; Its simply a lack of pixels yeah it sucks but it's not a flaw, it's a design choice that will be addressed at a later time.As far as graphics again compared to WoW? Are you serious you cant even see cloth or hair texture design in WoW and it's (WoW) art style in areas looks like aged milk.Again bad comparison. And the Early game is average for an MMO at least you're getting a story and only some of them are go forth and bring me bear butt for some reason. Not to mention you don't have to kill about fifty to sixty things to get the 4 items you need to turn in. I'll agree on the customization options but there is still alot to be offered even within it's confines height sliders are win.
my favorite yes its 14, but after come GW2, that in this moment, both are better than wow. I Played wow since launch and stoped after pandaria, and since then, i been in 14 for more than 5 years.
The company philosophy has changed a lot, blizz today dont care about player base anymore, its just like EA who cares about quick money. Its been years i dont buy any EA games.
I love FFXIV social aspects, but it's combat is really boring in most cases. It's what the community does on servers that has made so many memories for me on this game.
MMO's are a great thing which connect people together, I really hope they will be a genre which is always around :)
I'm worried this game is reaching the end of it's lifespan. A game like oldschool Runescape can last forever I think, but I'm not sure how I feel about the idea that this game might be rebooted for the next generation of technology and I'll end up losing all my progress.
