Look, I like fantasy music, and unlike many that think "we've had enough so it's time for a change", I strongly believe the fantasy orchestral genre can be taken literally anywhere and can sound different without going the lengths of making it garage-level very soft punk rock.
Before the high notes at about 25 seconds start screeching their incredibly dull not-melody, I can almost hear Dexter Holland singing about his "friends" that "hate" their parents.
I love rock. I've played rock before, all kinds. While we're no stranger to rock themes, I think it would serve better as some random primal, like Sephirot, or a raid, like Alex's wacky tunes. As "the song you'll hear the first 30 seconds of, over and over"? Nah. As a standalone rock song? It's just... bland. It doesn't really pick up. It just stays flat all throughout. There's no low point, no high point, nothing to go crazy about.
It's actually very reminiscent of 1.0's battle theme's incredibly annoying first 30 seconds! Hey! Maybe that's why it's there! Look at the SCH AF in Shadowbringers. Maybe they thought: "Let's make a battle theme in the veins of 1.0's." Except 1.0's battle theme, in all of its weirdness, had tempo changes, a breakdown, and memorable parts.
The bass in this will make you a real man.
It's okay, it sounds super simple and almost like an newbie band practicing lol.
The intro is wayyyy too long though before it gets better.
Overall I like the sound of the song, but I feel as the main overworld battle theme it really needs that intro to be nowhere that long. Cut the intro time by... at least 1/2 to 3/4 and I think it would be a better main battle theme.
That's incredibly jarring and inappropriate for a battle theme and just sounds really generic. I hope this is not a sign of the rest of the OST because I really enjoyed the job trailer theme and was hoping it would be along those lines.
Thankfully, we can turn that battle music off. I have mine off already anyway, but if I didn't, that would make me do it. It's definitely not up to the standards of the other music in the game, IMO.
I think it's pretty good, better and SB and HW battle theme!
I effing love this SONG AHHHHHHHHHHH
I think its okay! I mean nothing is going to beat the Heavensward dungeon boss music in terms of battle music for me anyway. Even though this is the overworld music.
And 1.0 still has the best basic battle music by leaps and bounds. One day they will make some that competes, but not today.
I think its pretty fitting considering we are Warriors of Darkness, it was meant to sound rocky and rebellious.
Honestly I really love this song but I don't think it fits for a battle song. There is something jarring going from the fairy tail sounding music to that. I don't feel that arr/hw/sb had such a jarring transition for their battle music, but arguably I do like this song more than the battle music for those areas so its weird. I dunno I think it'd be a nice primal music instead.
I never thought I would ever turn off this game's music, but never say never, it has happened with this battle music. Time to play youtube music until I reach a duty or town.
Sounds almost like something from Guilty Gear. I like it.
It's way better than SB's battle theme.
The only thing I dislike is the guitar tone. Sounds like it was plugged on to a cheap practice amp and that's it. It would sound way better with a more modern tone and a shorter intro.
I love it. Need the OST to come to stores for preorder already!
I really don't like SB battle theme. It breaks the experience and immersion completely. It doesn't match the rest of the score at all, I hate it... =(
But I have no choice but to live with it.
I don't know, Rencounter has really grown on me, which is unusual given I'm not often a fan of screechy soft-metal guitars, but it just works somehow.
Best theme in the game.
I didn't realize they added the Necromancer job already.
I never have battle music on just because it would be an actual crime to interrupt Sands of Amber or any of the night music. I think it's one of the very few weaker aspects of the expansion, but that's a very, very minor complaint.
Heavensward probably has my favorite for the start up and the progression into the main theme. It's not too much, but still bombastic. Stormblood and Shadowbringers both remind me of turn based games, because you know you're entering a battle with BABY BABY BABY BABY or [insert Those Who Fight here]. But after fight 50, it's going to grate a bit.
The ARR battle theme was okay.
I quite liked Melt from HW.
The Stormblood battle theme got on my nerves at first, but I warmed up to it.
The ShB theme is the only one I legitimately dislike. I turned off the battle music.
It's a good theme...just not a good theme for this expansion or game. It completely clashes with the rest of the soundtrack, and not a single dungeon, trial, or area matches with the "vibe" it gives. It IMO is the only blemish on this soundtrack, and they could have done a lot better.
You say this in game that has Dragonsong, Bismark's theme, actual high energy j-pop that is Suzaku's theme, and Dohn Mheg's theme.
The mass appeal for the OST is how many genres and songs there are. There is no uniform "vibe." If you'd never played, and someone played 15 seconds of Ifrit's theme, and then Innocent's, you would not think they are from the same game let alone genre.
I actually like the ShadowBringers battle theme. I like the guitar work going into the song and I have it played in my room Orchestrion from time to time.
The overworld battle music has never really fit the area that it's in, for any expansion. At *most* it gets a small difference in instrumentation used like the ARR variations did (like one area used primarily flute while another used an organ, but it's still very much the same melody and piece of music). Generally it fits closer to the thematic elements of that expansion's main song style, or in the case of Stormblood using part of the melody from the titular song as part of the battle music...and we see that again with Rencounter and Shadowbringers, with the two sharing a similar rock style of instrumentation.
The only zone I can think of where the music you hear when you fight fits the zone itself that is also an overworld zone? Azys Lla...and it doesn't use battle music, and instead keeps playing the theme for the zone (unless you get into a FATE, in which case it defaults to FATE music).
