In stead of hiding the tail, why not tail armor that matches the chest/leg armor that meshes rather than clips.
the reason we play with au'ra or miqo'te is to see that tail pierce those unbreakable metal pants
Well, I never stated I was SOLEY BOTHERED by the tail clipping. However, this topic is about tails. I added my thoughts on how laughable the clipping is on tails. Do you really want my FULL thoughts on clipping in general?
Yes, I think SE is incredibly lazy and deserves any and all criticism they receive when it comes to clipping. Hair styles are awful. Tails are the worst. Hands, as mentioned, can be just as bad. I find SE to take the easy path in many places with this game, and clipping is one of them.
If you want to imply people are hypocrites simply because they are sticking to the topic at-hand and not elaborating on everything else, have at it.
Also, I never claimed there was a game WITHOUT clipping. I stated that XI, XIV's predecessor, designed gear specifically for mithra and galka to account for tails.
Perhaps try reading and reacting to what a person actually says instead of making up your own little story.
If you picked a race on character-select that has obvious identity traits -- be it tails, horns, weird skin colours, long-necks etc -- it is not up to the developers to fix that blemish for you when it doesn't appeal to you versus certain gear.
Sincerely yours,
No-Tail Thighlander
@multiple people: "You don't pick a tailed race to hide the tail."
I can think of a lot of reasons to pick miqo or au ra that have nothing to do with the tails.
@multiple people: "You can't dislike tail clipping when everything else clips!"
Hair, hands, whatever clipping through the body occasionally doesn't bother me at all. Heck, the tail clipping doesn't "bother" me, but I would like to see it worked better for capes/armor (like arr did, RIP) but SE is lazy and we know that won't happen.
@multiple people: "The devs have better things to do than waste time on this!"
Irrelevant, this is a forum to discuss the game that we all pay for and everyone is free to use it to that end.
Can't you see that this option is the solution to FINALLY get rid of the limitations for anticlipping development? With that, the development team can deliver to us MUCH more varieties of glamour.
I will not change my race, because I don't like the other ones, being the hair or faces. Let's make the game for everyone by including options. Nobody should be forced to change a lot of things because of simple quality of life such as hide tail.
I did read your post and replied with other points after addressing and refuting some of your other main points. I'm not going to bother talking about what XI did because I didn't play XI and frankly, it's tiring how often we have to keep comparing XIV and XI all of the time, and almost boast XI up on this pedestal as an excuse as to why this or that needs to be done sometimes.
This isn't XI, it's XIV. What the developers did then may or may not ever happen now.
Perhaps try responding rationally rather than emotionally since the more you ad hominem and shout at a person, the less inclined they are to even care about your own opinions or what you have to say.
Stop looking to be offended after every turn just because another person doesn't agree with you. Using the word "If" does not mean that anything is implied to you directly. That's the whole reason of the word "if", "if" you did think that.
Take a chill pill and don't respond with an attitude when I never even gave you one.
Man I miss the days when armor had different models to accommodate tails... Frankly tail clipping is the least egregious example of the problem by far. Hairstyles are worse and more noticeable, sleeves and coats are horrendous and let's remember how robes and long skirts sheer through our very legs when there's a breeze. If people really want to hide parts of their character model because that one particular part of clipping out of dozens really bothers them, I say fine add the option since we won't have to see how ridiculous they appear with parts lopped off them.
Fun fact, I didn't even notice the Plague Bringer's coat had a collar until I zoomed in and wondered what those black spiky bits clipping through my character's hair were coming from. Usually I don't notice at all, so I just ignore it. I do occasionally get a little bothered by the tail opening on the coat not accounting for the spiked-top tail option, but it's hardly a deal breaker to me.
I'm not giving you attitude, I am simply telling you directly to stop making things up. You put words in my mouth and I clarified. I am not emotional over here, but I am most definitely not a fan of people who twist things around just to try and make some point.
I didn't twist anything that you had said or put words in your mouth, it was a general message that could be taken by anyone, and if you took it as such, then you didn't read the content of my message correctly and took it way more personal than a normal person should.
You're emotional and giving me attitude, please stop it.
If your only rebuttal is "you're making things up", then we have nothing more to discuss because personally, I don't feel like conducting a conversation with you any longer if this is the way you're going to act.
Why offer a hide tail option when people should fantasia into a better race.
I wanted to play a female Au Ra when I started, but the tail along with being crazy tiny were the drawbacks. I'm not a fan of tails, but I would never want this even if it is an option as it is part of their identity, and I am all about maintaining identity and uniqueness in this game.
I feel like they would have to fix the armor since tail is part of the race's identity. But if they did that, people would ask for them to fix all other clipping as well (hair, mounts, etc). So I just feel like this is unlikely to happen. Plus I like my tail even if it clips terribly sometimes.
The tail should be hidden while wearing the chocobo suit. It looks ridiculous with it.
Capes on armors do make the tails quite clippy.
Ban capes.
But regardless of what happens, even if it is the most likely nothing, as long as it's not tail boners in the essence of Evenstar set, it will be fine.
While the costumes are ridiculous (in a good way?) just because of what they are, the chocobo suit makes it look like you're taking a poo :X

But then on the snowman suit & pig suit they do actually hide the tail:

Truth be told, I don't mind the tail clipping on most normal armor. Yes, I think it's horrible. Yes, I think SE is lazy as sin to allow for tails to be handled in that way, but the tails have never really stopped me from wearing a particular piece of armor (unlike hairstyle clipping which has most definitely prevented me from using a hairstyle or armor piece I want).
HOWEVER, the chocobo outfit is the one that really makes me ask WTH. The tails just look bad. They hide the tail in other costumes - why not this one?
The pig suit actually makes it look like you have a butt too.
At the very least, SE should rework some gear to either fit tails or hide them, as Skivvy showed as an example.
As for an option to hide it, when recalling Yoshida's expressed views on how races should not lose their visual identities, something tells me he'd not be keen on implementing a feature like that.
LOOOOOOL please forgive me, but that's first time I've seen that, genuinely laughed out loud for a good while...yeah that's not good, I went WTH as well come on Square really? XD Reminds me of that haircut with the buns on the side of the head.. you know which one I'm talking about :p
and you should not believe that lol
Hi I remember seeing this topic a few years ago, and now I find myself looking back at this and thinking why has square not done this ?
I have gone to and graduated college with a video game design degree (yeah that is a thing) and I can say I have worked with Unreal, Unity and PS4 dev kits (cant say the real software due to NDA, that was part of a class though)
I know square has options, one thing to do would be to add an opacity map to the shader settings. This can help with other clipping as well. (any one ever notice that the palm of the hand can clip with punching gloves ?)
I spent a lot of time figuring out my own clipping issues, I know its a pain but I got suggestions square !
I'm willing to bet the tail is separate from the main skeleton given micropanther7 and Skivvy's screen shots, if so then it would be verry simple for them to set a hide setting.
One guy could add a toggle to the options in less than a day (if it is separate from the skeleton)
given the total number of items it would take a few days for one guy, but one guy cold still updated each item to hide it the way the snowman suit does just by setting a bool
(to the from admins this is a call to action for Square lol)
for the guy who mentioned hair clipping I have suggestions for that to but its less universal so I need to see the the "Crystal Tools" game runs on to know what is doable lol
fingers crossed for some improvements when DT drops.
can't spell when waking up lol
they should at least hide it on the suits. Raindeer and Chocobo suits are unusable for tail races
I know I'm replying to many year old posts but...
Since they're basically humans they shouldn't need the tail, but moving past that I don't think the way you framed the issue is the best way of looking at it. Whether or not one needs a tail doesn't dictate whether they will have a tail (or have a tail where it can be seen).
Humans generally "need" two arms, but we have a one armed character in the game. The same reasoning for the one arm could be applied to tails. Or even simpler, hiding the tail under clothes.
Even real cats pull their tails around their bodies sometimes. If miqote for example can't, that would be weirder to me than not having one.
The game probably has the ability to do this already, and while development time is a valid concern for anything, we have to be realistic. Who would be developing this? The story writers and and the people designing combat content probably don't work on animations and graphics. This will take someone time to do, but that doesn't mean it will impact the rest of the game at all.
This is now hindsight, but when the comment I'm replying to was originally made the upcoming graphics overhaul was very far away, but it was conceivable that such an overhaul would eventually happen. A hide tails option could have simply been added to a list of things meant for any overhaul down the line, which likely would have made any resource impact from this project even less than it would be otherwise.
As for looking ridiculous, refer to the one armed character I mentioned before. Part of the uniqueness in having a tail is being able to play with the unusual situation of not having a tail when you're expected to. You wouldn't ask a hyur why they don't have a tail, but you might a miqote or aura. That would only happen with those races. I'd argue that a no tail option only heightens their uniqueness.
Since the people designing gear don't seem to be aware of the fact that 3 out of the 8 playable races have tails, I wouldn't mind an option to hide the tail so I can enjoy more outfits without them clipping trough the tail.
I laughed sooooooooooooo hard when I bought that stupid fat cat attire because I just wanted a lazy sweater item, and wouldn't you know it, on my au ra it completely deleted the tail. Awful, awful change. No indication on the storesite that it would do this either. Reeeeeeal money spent btw.
Idk who designed all those items back in ARR that had tail holes in the equipment and cat/elezen ear sockets in the helmets but can you bring that guy back PLEASE and just have him hold a seminar for a day on how he did that stuff. because it legit feels like that 1 dude just quit and now nobody knows how to do his job. which is humiliating because you have modders working at home for free in their spare time doing this stuff and knocking it out of the park. hell, maybe have a modder come in and show you how to use blender on your own assets lmao
god, just imagine, some sweaty nerd pulling up to teach cbu3's art division how to add tail holes on their own gear, ugh

It has nothing to do with a skill developed or lost - it's time and bandwidth. If SE isn't hiring enough artists to compensate for the increased bandwidth required to support an ever-sprawling list of races, classes, styles, and higher quality demands, people have to take shortcuts to meet deadlines and those little bits of polish are what go straight into the dumpster.
Someone working on mods can spend three weeks babying one piece of gear. Professionals don't have that luxury.
Why SE isn't hiring enough artists for the workload demands is a whole different question. This notoriously stingy company needs to wake up already and realize that it is costing them dearly.
You can nowadays (and even back when the Fat Cat attire was released) go to the inn room and use the bed to preview cash shop items, to see how well they work it or how horribly they clash with your character. That might not be the primary intention of the feature, but it works for that.
fat cat? guess I missed that.
I took a few brakes at college, still catching up on things added to the game.
but yeah knowing what I know now I exact hiding tails is not hard. as CaptainLagbeard said 3 of 8 races have tails, its wrath looking into.
I don't know what to expect the DT graphic, I need to play end walker before I look at dawn trail lol
that would require reworking the mesh of the models witch would take a lot more effort from the 3D artist but it is doable.
other wise they could add cloth collision to any appropriate outfits. that is 100% doable for unreal and unity (albeit a pain in unity)
Performance would take a hit for cloth collision, and Crystal Tools may not handle it in in the same way as other engines I used, so it may not be to faceable í ¾í´”
still it makes me wander what the update will bring other than textures and lighting.
in 1.0 there was no clipping on trails. We all know how that went.
But honestly when I'm doing glamor stuff. It drives me mad.
It's even worse that may take the time to put a hole in the gear but then not have the follow the butt movement.
1 quick options would be in gear animate tail down a few Centimeter. So it starts moving beyond the gear.
