...because the developers have proven time and time again that when non combat gear is designed to be unisex it is often made to be very feminine or androgynous. Not everything needs to be available to everybody and it'd be great if male characters could be thrown the occasional bone every now and then.
Honestly, this whole "Why can't all gear be gender neutral" thing has me baffled. In previous single player games, when certain characters were given the costumes of past characters, such as what they do in the Tales series as fanservice, no one ever complained that Alvin was the only character allowed to wear Kratos's angel costume from Symphonia and not any of the girls, let alone THE only male character to have that costume period.
I'm just....I don't get it. If they want something just for guys; great, have at it. If they want something just for the gals; okay, splendid. If they want something for both genders; great, double bonus.
I'm not sure what pettiness has to do with it and why we can't just accept that we don't need to have everything just because it's there.
Because locking character customization and design behind gender locks is just silly. There's no reason NOT to unlock everything, as long as they start designing some male-catered clothes along with it.
More is lost by locking stuff behind character gender than is gained by unlocking.
Lol, finally get a MSE and the female chr's cant take it... Now you guys know how us Male chr's feel. But I agree, just make all gear for all genders. I want to wear the wedding dress like Hildy did!
Being new to the forum, I feel like I've stepped onto a partisan issue here. My concern stems from the lack of Samurai-like appearance for the Samurai class. Almost all of it is just generic monk stuff. I couldn't care less about exclusives, if anything, they seem to be a shallow way to fuel the Fanta demand.
You have. The glamour disparity that skews in favor of female characters, both in quantity and quality, is a longstanding hot topic around these parts. The crafted glamour for guys just released is a fantastic example because it was only announced after a lot of backlash they received for 4.3 getting only a female-exclusive craftable set, for instance.
But, why is it silly? Is it silly because of the way modern times have started to change with LGBTQ movements dictating that everyone should be able to wear what they want? Or is it silly because people see something that a guy is wearing and instead of rolling a male character to use it, decide it's easier to just complain about it instead until the devs make it so it's available for female and male players simultaneously? Literally, considering that everyone can freely roll a guy or girl character at the same time, do we really have options locked behind by a single gender when SE isn't stopping you from playing either one? It's not as if that once you pick a gender, you're strictly locked into playing that gender for your entire sub.
And don't get me wrong, I have no problems with the LGBTQ community wearing whatever they want or doing whatever they want, I'm just wondering why this is such a big deal and why people can't accept that not everything needs to be gender neutral if they don't have to be inside of an MMO. Video games have been doing that since the single player titles and before the 90's limiting character customization towards certain genders.
People take it as an insult or feel offended by it, and maybe I'm just too old enough or too easy going not to feel offended or care that girls can't wear Hien's outfit and just accept that it's a male exclusive. That there's nothing wrong with it.
Ok first you need to back that trump truck with your LGBT nonsense. What people are finding silly is that in a game where you are encourage to create your own character and develop them as you see fit you are then restricted by your gender in clothing options. Bringing up games with pre-made characters and the optional DLC costumes they have is also ridiculous, since when using a pre-made character you have no real expectation of customization. The character is as the designer intended and you as a player have little or no input.
.....Did you even read anything I even said before the flames of bias hatred overclouded your senses and judgment to respond civilly? What on earth does Trump or politics have anything to do with what I just said? Did you not see the other paragraph or do you just jump down anyone's throat before reading?
Before making sudden accusations regarding my political stances, you should read first, or better yet....just not make sweeping accusations period because you're reacting off of feelings rather than logic.
I think it really boils down to the disparity between how much FSE we we see as opposed to the MSE. If they released then in tandem, like the wedding attire and this new lord/lady thing, I dont think it would be quite as frustrating. But they dont. Like another poster said there was a whole FSE crafter set and no MSE to accompany it. It had to come out much later.
Bottom line, how does it hurt you to unlock gender specific gear?
It doesn't hurt me either way really, that's a question that should be posed towards the devs truthfully. But, honestly speaking, considering the other problems we have within the game such as content becoming kind of stale, the botting, and problems with PvP.
The idea that Hien's outfit needs to be unlocked for females and that all gear should be like the lvl 1. neutral does not seem like it needs to be as large of a problem right now as others are making it out to be. If the devs intended for everything to be gender unlocked from the very beginning, then well, we probably wouldn't be having this conversation then, lol.
But, it's obvious that they didn't and it's also obvious that they don't think its as much of an issue now as everyone on the forums is making it out to be. Personally speaking, I'd rather see the Mogstation items become fixed and made more as account wide items than this right now and just an overhaul in gear design period for both genders. Aside from Swallow's Compass and the Rathalos stuff....there's not much in terms of uniqueness anymore when they keep reusing assets upon assets. More variety in general would be nice where males get clothing that actually look masculine for them, but not everything designed for females needs to have a short skirt or boob window.
Maybe if they did a better job at designing gear for both genders in the first place, we might not have this disparity, lol.
Agreed, there are bigger fish to fry. But there is no reason we cant raise concerns about other things, we shouldn't have to wait in some arbitrary line to raise our issues. This is not a game breaking issue, although you wouldnt be able to tell the way some people have to go all Alex Jones to try and get their point across.
And your last sentence is BANG on!
It has nothing to do with LGBT stuff (Though I'm sure they wouldn't mind the option). It's just because there's no reason not to. If someone gets offended by a guy in a skirt that's their deal, but that's literally the only argument I've seen against it that might hold any kind of water. Just because there are "bigger problems" in the game doesn't really mean anything. Glamour is important to a lot of players, I think they're allowed to voice their concerns or ideas about it.
And really, some of the gender locked designs are just silly. Like the expeditioner's stuff. What is specifically male or female about either one of those?
Does Lord Hien's outfit really strike you as being very masculine looking?

Yes. The armor under the robe, the way he wears his robe with one shoulder exposed, the way some of the ribbons and strings are tied with minimal concern for aesthetics. These are things you'd see less associated with feminine aesthetics, and if you did see them associated with a female's outfit, they'd be labeled differently and invoke different associations.
It helps that Hien is pretty beefy:

A few minor texture issues aside, it isn't a bad set - it's colourful without being needlessly gaudy and it shows off some of Hien's muscular physique. He looks pretty masculine in general, which is precisely why a lot of us wanted to have his hairstyle and stubble as customisation options.
Yet we didn't get that.
Imagining his outfit on female characters makes me think
