Aside from the middle one which looks really close to the concept the rest just feels... lackluster or uninspired to me. The only thing that feels "new" is the helmet while the coats all look like copy pasta from the other stuff in-game.

tbh i'm not a fan, but like 90% of the gear looks the similar to me and I don't much care for their looks so yeah...
I like the boots... that's all
Apparently the concept artist and people at SE really liked The Ancient Magus's Bride, especially evident in the third person from the left.
more of the same, nothing impressive.
They need to give us few Tera level of skimpy-ness.
Why is that Korean mmorpg is always much more skimpy than Japanese mmorpg, i thought it should be reverse.
Looks like Diablo II gear
I'd like to see the tank gear without the ankle skirt. Show me dat leg armor.
they filled in the thigh holes with some kinda textured tights :c
overall its kinda "eh". I think they messed with the winning caster design too much trying to shoehorn assets in- the altered collar is ripped from the casting/healing weeping city sets and the altered masks are reskins of the kitsune pvp sets. It not hideous, but its really watered down compared to the other 2 winners.
because f2p korean mmos make a good portion of their money off panty shots and jiggle physics.
Oh. So they did mess around with the chaps. That's disappointing.
I don't really understand why they would do that considering they've got subligars in this game.
lmao at this and the reddit thread reactions of "Another robe for casters, typical SE EUGH"
"Actually that's the tank set, not the caster set"
*poster mysteriously doesn't post again*
In their defense, 99% of the gear we do get is robes/skirts/dresses. So.
I'm bummed about the awesome hood and chaps being gone. Might use the top for an original outfit... I was never crazy about the helm, arms, or feet so the fact that they're slightly uglier now doesn't bother me much.
If the girls keep the chaps then holy hell SE stop self-censoring when you have subligars and banana hammocks in the game already. We don't need another indistinguishable pair of pants.
No thigh vents no buy!
I mean does SE even try anymore with the gear designs lol it's either reskinned or just plain terrible...they need to definitely replace the designer because SB hasn't been good to them, all the gear has been ugly just like the hairstyles XD
The only way we'll be able to tell is when we see the female version of the caster set. It's not uncommon for SE to have different bottoms for different jobs and genders across the same gear set.
Kinda feel bad for tank (and possibly DRG) friends that they got stuck with the skirt this time around, but maybe they'll appreciate it more since they don't get them as often as we do.
Huh... It's like Weeping City and World of Darkness sets had a lovechild. And then Void Ark adopted it.
Yawn. Well, my only takeaway from this is that healers have a couple more heavy-armor-ish options in the gloves and boots. I wonder if they could compliment the Proto-ultima mesh?
Really disappointed with the changes. The original design was very different from what we usually get and the modifications made to it just make it more of the same. Wish they'd left it be and let us have a different feeling set for a change.
The other designs are even less impressive and (like other people mentioned) don't really have a unified theme to them. Some of the helmets look alright, though.
I was so excited for the winning caster design but I'm quite disappointed with some of the changes. No open thigh windows? Thinner heels on the boots? Why? Don't get me wrong I'm still going to farm for the set and use it for glamour. Besides I still have the Shisui/Faire Kohakama if I want the exposed thighs (which again, why get rid of the thigh windows if they were "comfortable" enough to make them before). I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the sets are dyeable, and I really really hope that the cape piece is part of the gloves and not the chest piece because I feel like it might kill glamour options...
From left to right:
Mnk/Sam or Nin set - Pretty good, actually, apart from the heels and the awkward plate bulge over the upper foot, and the gauntlets being oh so bulky.
Healer set - "Don't worry, no one ever gets hit in the chest, and my boots go up to my pelvis so my legs will be fine."
Nin or Mnk/Sam set - Casters, if casters were allowed to wear more than just white?
Tank? set - Void Ark dress again?
Caster set - Pretty good, apart from the heels and the awkward plate bulge over the upper foot.
Ranged? set - Actually really like the exposed arm, but the gloves are as painfully bulky as on the
Dragoon set - "We won the ugly/gaudy/comedic_super-villain contest?"
Really? I might be blind but the set looks pretty on point almost. I would say the only changes was the chaps (thank god honestly) and the helmet. You need to understand that when someone designs a piece of gear there will be changes when it gets implemented into the game. I believe the content even mentions this so you should have expected it. Artwork doesn't always translate to in-game.
Artwork will always look better than the end result when its actually in the game because the game doesn't follow the same art style of the artwork. The same thing happened to the lost allagan set, it wasn't exactly the same but as long as I am able to identify it as the contest winner then they did a good job getting it in the game with making minor changes for it work on their engine and what they are working with. Let's be honest, did you really think they would be able to replicate the fire on the helmet like that in the artwork? If you have been playing this game long enough you would know they can't. I am actually impressed they were able to pull off the cape on the caster set. Also you need to remember this was a CASTER set contest. They didn't need to make one for the other roles but they tried to copy the style for the other roles and I think they did a good job.
If it helps for those designing the melee/ranged set try not to make something which would be hard to put in the game. That doesn't mean it needs to be bland but something that is realistically able to be implemented without big changes needed to your design. It's one of the reasons why the lost allagan set won. It looked good, matched the theme of the game and they can actually make it without too much trouble. People need to learn that when implementing gear from artwork to game form there will be small changes along the way. As long as they get a good majority of it then it's fine.
If I made a set and it won but they made minor changes like removing chaps do you really think I would be annoyed by that? They got most of it right anyway and I would be happy to see my set in the game. That's just how game development works. Things get changed for it to fit in the game and people need to learn that.
The caster is fine, not really 100% how the original was but at least thats something that I will probably use. (But whats with SE and belts? Why add a belt there..) The rest just shows that they might need some more new creative people in their team..the monk one is the only one that looks at least a bit like the caster set, the rest could have been from something completely else..
Also the winner seems to have posted on the reddit thread (if its the person) and seems to be disappointed by it, so yeah.
Assuming Kefirarei is indeed the artist behind the Caster set (posted in this thread), they seem pretty disappointed.

errrr..... it seems, the chaps.. still have a black pants under it ._. and the horns looks little bit silly and just like the ifrit's horns XDDD originally i design the horns like just a (ghostly) fire particle/ animated glowing texture lol awwww kind of sad XDDDDD
I already know the person who made it is disappointed but they mention the ghostly fire on the helmet/the chaps and like I mentioned in my post i'm not surprised SE wasn't able to do that (maybe they could have done the chaps but...yeah no thanks personally).
When designing a piece of gear you need to think about what is feasible for them to do based on previous gear they have made. I'm not saying they can't be disappointed but if it was me if they got a majority of it right then I will be happy with what they made.
Look at the most recent contest for melee/ranged dps it clearly says at the bottom:
So I don't see why this comes as a surprise. If you looked at the rules and understood what the contest entails you would know they might make certain changes on who won. Based on this statement they changed the helmet and the chaps mainly and everything else is basically close to the original material.Quote:
The development team may alter the grand-prize-winning designs before implementation.
I just can't think of a logical reason to really remove the chaps (or put pants underneath them) when we already have subligars (most can't be worn by Casters/Healers) and the Shisui set.
Not bothering to read through the topic, but..
Two things are making me think they're Primal based.
The flaming horns on the middle and the cloak kind of looking like fire would more likely than not be Ifrit, and the Horn on the one in the very left makes me think of Bismarck...
Alot of horny players shown i guess?
Kidding aside i do like the caster set, the rest is something i would glam something else over top of
A bit late on replying due to finals, apologies.
I would argue very little of the actual design was retained, and there isn't much about the changes that can really be blamed on game limitations. The aspects that I can understand being modified for this reason would be the cape (the least modified part of the outfit), the helmet's location (modified to behave as a hat, probably to prevent racial clipping issues), and the tassels that hang from the helmet which are much smaller, again probably due to clipping.
So what else was changed?
*Hood is now similar to the preexisting ponchos, with a ring of fur instead of the fur bunching up where the hood does. The white plating in the front of the hood is also gone.
*The purple particle effect the original designer wanted is replaced by static glowing orange horns. I'm not sure why this isn't replicatable to any degree, considering this game absolutely breaths particle effects and has no problem slapping them on equipment. Even if this is impossible/difficult, leaving them as they are with the original purple gradient would have sufficed.
*Nothing else about the helmet was retained either other than it being animal-skull shaped. It was loaded with ridge-like patterns, an extra set of horns, and doesn't appear to have glowing eyes anymore. It now resembles the fox masks you can get with Wolf marks, and the unnecessary detail makes the design less sleek.
*Loincloth was widened and is now more of a tunic. A belt and some gold waist thingy that sticks out of the hips was added. Both interrupt the form-fitting shape of the original design.
*Color scheme was drastically changed. The white plating on the boots was changed to a silver metal plating, the buttons(?) were changed from the same white plating to gold, the cape is now a bright red instead of the magenta color seen in the rest of the outfit, etc. You can argue that this will be dyeable but the limited dyeing channels might just bungle this worse.
*The chaps are gone. This is probably what I have the least issue with since it's substitutable with the faire joi, though I feel the overall aesthetic of "saucy evil caster" was lost partially due to this.
*Boots are now high heels.
You can argue that it doesn't fit the style of the game, but not wanting to make use of different styles makes for the bland equipment we've been seeing lately. There isn't any reason, lore-wise, why the outfit couldn't exist. Why did SE choose this outfit if it didn't, in their eyes, fit the game?
I'm fine with small changes that must be made to fit the game. I have issues with many, many "small" changes that cumulatively change an outfit's entire aesthetic. While it might not have disappointed you to see a design of yours changes so drastically, it would disappoint me (and it did the original designer as well). This front isn't really worth arguing on, being so subjective.
Not a fan of the masks and most of the bodies look like re-skins to me.
I like what I can see of the healer body, though I'll reserve judgement until I can see it without the gloves - I hope it's sleeveless like some of the other sets. The boots might also make it into my wardrobe, depending on how they dye.
I'm really disappointed in the overall designs, though; I was really looking forward to the pants as designed to add some variety to the dozens of samey slacks we get, but I guess after the Skalla set I should have known better than to expect anything but disappointment on that front. Based on what we can see of the FemmeRoe's pants, at least it looks like female models got the same treatment this time, though that might actually be a net gain for them since they have a lot fewer plain pants models to work with...if it turns out that female casters get the open chaps, though, I swear to Rhalgar I will riot.
Is this one set on all the races or a different set for all classes? If the latter, that is some seriously uninspired design. Everything looks just a little too similar to one another. The middle on the male kitty looks ok though.
