And Lupin are a beast tribe, whats your point?
My complaint is rather than leaving themselves open to the option of a mermaid/merman race down the line, they used the existing Raen race to fill the gap.
I may have been reading deeper into it, but while Sui-no-Sato being a little villiage is one thing, the fact that the undersea Raen populous has a large and exquisite castle at Shisui of the Violet Tides, filled to the brim with guards and servants, seems indicative of a larger society than just it and Sui-no-Sato.
It's probably more akin to Miqo'te tribe rules, but this large a split between the Raen just feels like they may as well make a third clan...
I question where they come from because I'm curious and there are others who have felt the same in the past about the other races, too. That's why we have brief descriptions of each race and their clans in character creation, because there are people who are curious about them. I just want to learn a little more about the Au'ra is all and just because you and some others aren't curious about their origins doesn't mean everybody else feels the same way, too.
Now I'm dropping this because I said what I felt I needed to say and don't care for whatever comeback argument you or anybody else has or whatever crappy joke somebody wants to throw in for laughs.
Sorry for the brief derailment of the topic and please continue with it on topic, thank you.
That's from their character blurb on the New Character screen. Seems Sui-no-Sato is actually more the norm rather than an outlier. It's just in the ocean instead of in the mountains like their lore states.Quote:
Auri creation myth tells of a Dawn Father and a Dusk Mother from whom all Au Ra are descended. The Raen believe their veins to run thick with the blood of the former─their brilliant white scales and iron wills serving as proof of this divine lineage.
Unlike their sister clan, the Xaela, who bloody the land with their endless tribal conflict, the Raen have embraced a life of tranquility and solitude, long abandoning the nomadic lifestyle of their ancestors to settle the deep valleys of Othard's mountainous eastern reaches. Only on rare occasions will one emerge from the valley mists to seek adventure in realms afar.
Beast tribes seem to be classified based both on their appearance and level of sentience.
The Matanga (The elephant-men at the Azim Steppe) for instance, are mistakenly not viewed as a beast tribe by some like the Garleans due to them having difficulty with learning and speaking the common tongues.
The Lupin have all the markings of a typical beast tribe and as previously stated, it's not unusual for them to be integrated into societies that aren't racist towards them.
I would take a magitek android who gained sentience through magicks as a player character. We have enough cute/sexy races.
I would love to see a mechanical race.
Lifts-Her-Tail
My goodness, that's quite a loaf! But how ever shall it fit my oven?
Crantius Colto
This loaf isn't ready for baking, my sweet. It has yet to rise.
Lifts-Her-Tail
If only we could hurry that along. How would I accomplish such a task?
Crantius Colto
Oh, my foolish little Argonian maid, you must use your hands.
Lifts-Her-Tail
You wish me to knead the loaf? Here?
Crantius Colto
Of course.
Lifts-Her-Tail
But what if the mistress catches me? Your loaf was meant to satisfy her appetite.
Crantius Colto
Don't fret, my delicate flower. I'll satisfy the mistress's cravings later.
Lifts-Her-Tail
Very well, but I'm afraid my oven isn't hot enough. It could take hours!
Crantius Colto
Plenty of time, my sweet. Plenty of time.

Give Japanese examples where a furry/scaley race is popular outside of doujinshi and maybe that'll have more of a leg up. Otherwise they'll be like Roe. High population in the US, scarce in JP and to an extend EU. People like kawaii desu characters and sexy anime boys. See Little Ladies day and fan art in general.
One major factor, I imagine (and I might be way off here), why most races are humanoid in MMOs - and FFXIV in particular - is due to armor design and movement animation. Each helmet in-game must be modeled to go around a set of horns, or accommodate a pair of pointy, longer ears. Each pair of pants in the game must have a variant version to go around a tail. Boots must make sense with non-plantigrade feet. It's a lot of resources, and sadly something that many game devs decide is too much of a pain to bother with.
In Guild Wars 2 you could tell that the armor designers were starting to get frustrated with designing Charr armor. Most of it looked horrible on Charr (helmets were particularly awful). Even with cash-shop items, which you'd expect to be higher quality designs, you could tell the devs cut some corners, like letting the tail clip through most pants and skirt armors. ArenaNet at least made the attempt, though, to their credit, of tackling a VERY non-human race and designing armor for it. The race-specific Charr armor, for example, was spot-on but looked like it took a while to make and finish. This is further than many devs often try to go.
And to Blizzard's credit as well, digitigrade races like the Worgen and hooved races like Tauren & Draenei don't have goofy-looking boots. The boots become like foot-bangles automatically. Druids, when transformed, just have a set style of armor (backplate on bear, etc), if any. No special modifications. I half suspect that concerns over shoulder armor and leg/foot armor design are what prevented them from making the flight-capable Arakkoa a playable race as well. You can imagine how ridiculous shoulder armor would look on a bird race as they flapped their wings, for example. And everyone loves that shoulder armor too much. And also as a goofy side note, I doubt a developer would bother with a race where you can barely tell the genders apart, unless they took serious liberties and butchered the intended design and practicality of the species. ArenaNet got this 100% correct with body design differences between the genders of Charr, and Larian Studios seems to be getting it right with the Lizards in OS2 so far. Practicality is great, but it doesn't appeal to people for some reason. Devs won't waste their time on a race they don't feel will ever be played.
I don't foresee SE taking the time and resources to mold all the in-game armor sets to fit more non-human races. Races like the Viera, Banga, and Burmecians walk on their toes. Boot and legging armor design would become an issue and a bog on resources & time. Helmet design for any race with a snout or beak also becomes a problem. All of this on top of animation for all those new armors so there's no clipping through the unique body shapes during run, jog, sprint, knockback, KO, etc. I've seen other devs do it, but I don't foresee SE making the attempt. SE puts huge effort into making the races we have look and move well in armor and cloth, no matter what animation the character is using at the time.
If any Ivalice race would be easily transferable to Hydaelyn, it would be the moogles, since SE already does armor models for smaller, humanoid races like the Lalafell, and it wouldn't take much adjusting on the shoes/boots since Ivalice moogles are seemingly plantigrade. But we already have moogles, so there's a conflict with naming and lore.
I think the Au Ra are the closest thing to a playable reptilian race we'll see in FFXIV.
In fact I don't see them introducing any new races from here til the end of FFXIV as we know it. I would love to be surprised, though. And I hope I am.
I always saw Bowser (since most of the main cast is human anyway) love as more of an appreciation of the character himself for being a dad. And bara material for... those people. As for Sonic, and OCs in general, again- it's a Western love, and the games/media reflect that. I think both cases were actually made with the US in mind upon conception.
Then again, they're also really cute in a mascot kind of way. Which makes me think if we did get a 10% humanoid playable race, they would still be cute like Sally or Amy instead of scary or in any way intimidating. Kinda like lalas.
Eh. I'd just rather have Xaela women look more buff and Raen men look more lean.
Well put argument. Though this makes me believe Lupin will be the closest we'll get to an actual playable beast race if they decide to add one, simply because with the exception of helmets, they can seemingly wear regular armor. Though SE may take the cheap way out and just introduce a glamourable helmet that makes you look like a Lupin, similar to the ones we have for Couerl, Behemoth, etc.
Someone suggests a reptilian race and before you know it the posts are about how sexy they can be.... this forum is definitely mostly males posting lol.
I am just good with anything but Viera or any other cutesy, over-sexed, anthropomorphized species. I understand it as, culturally, cutesy seems to be preferred in Japan and I have a particular distaste of cutesy anything. But seriously a well designed more dangerous looking race would be wonderful as the Au-ra were kind of a disappointment in that area for me.
More rl racial diversity would be welcome as well since it's difficult to make a character that doesn't just look white or Asian. But the system as a whole really needs a revamp.
You mean like the au ra? lol
If this was a Japan issue, I would have agreed, but the kawaii moe races are also played by the majority of the NA/EU/AUS community. Female Miqo'te (now female Au Ra aswell) is the most played race + gender combo. Aslong as Roegadyn, Elezen and Hyur Highlanders are the least played races, I just can not see SE deviating from the moe type of races.
Personaly I want them to add the Ivalice Viera, the artwork that they showed at the Fanfest 2014, showed a Viera that looks very similiar to the Ivalice version. The bad news is that they also showed moe smaller Viera artwork aswell. I fear if Viera were to be added to this game, then SE would pick the smaller Viera over the Ivalice version. According to my friend who plays on the Japanese servers, the Japanese players love the idea of playing a cute smaller Viera, which makes sense, because the Lalafell is the most played race over there.
Ivalice looking Viera.

Moe?
(letters)
Moe is a Japanese term used in connection with manga or anime to describe something precious, usually (but not always) the ideal of youthful and innocent femininity. Written with the kanji for "to bud or sprout" (萌), the concept covers a range of ideal behaviour for youthful female characters in manga or anime. To be moe, a character can be eager or perky, not overly independent, and call forth a desire in the viewer to protect them and nurture them.
We do exist you know.
Are Au Ra reptiles, though? I know it's a fantasy game and all that, but shouldn't reptiles be mostly, if not, 100% covered in scales and not 'some here, mammal/human skin everywhere else?'
When I think of a demi-human reptilian race, the Silurian from Doctor Who comes to mind.
See, the problem with only focusing on moe characters is, if everyone is moe, then no one is. Gotta have that contrast!
People tend to most readily associate scales with reptiles, which is probably why Au Ra are oft referred to as lizards (That and because it's just entertaining, IMO). By real world classifications, they'd definitely be considered mammals, though.
Err... No, there isn't. It was just their design inspiration was noted as being both demonic and draconic in origin.
All in-game speculation is about them being related to dragons, with their description in the character creation mentioning it (And simultaneously citing evidence that suggests otherwise) and the Ishgardians mistaking the first group of Auri refugees they encountered for Dravanians and subsequently killing them all.
There's not a chance of it happening. I mean why do you think the Au Ra turned out the way they did? They don't want to spend the extra money needed to redesign equips in the game to fit with a non-humanoid race. Well that and SE is largely catering to the tastes of their Japanese playerbase with little regard to what foreign players want. Well unless it's something that can make them significant profit for minimal investment on their end. Only then do they seem to care at all what foreign players want.
We have an Au ra and that might be the closest you can get race wise. All the races are different, so if they decide to add a new one it will be something completely new and different from what we already have. :) but you can always dream
Make love to a snake or crocodile, the options are there.
What if you wear the bunny ears in game as a Viera? Does Pandora's box open?
Still like the reptilian idea very much. For sure. Fan-art example:
In all reality it would probably be more the dragon/demon-human type though!?! (Also awesome.) Many people do remember this picture right:

Or finally a beast tribe hero? ^__^
