Would you have paid monthly for FFXIV if it was released the way it is today?

No. The game is still nothing but a mindless grind of exp parties and guildleves. Sure there are more grinding options, and the grand company quests would probably be a bit more challenging; but lets face it -- a grind is a grind.

Somewhat complete list of things that are still terrible and won't change till 2.0:

1. Huge grind, more grinds, and all there is to do is pretty much grind.
2. Crafting is atrocious.
3. One of the worst interfaces in any game I've ever seen (has improved though)
4. Server lag, animation lag, irreparable server issues until 2.0
5. Terrible map design, copy/paste design.
6. Spell animations leave significant desired feelings
7. The feeling of becoming physically and mentally distressed when crafting or grinding
8. Terrible optimization of the game, graphics, and server coding
9. Terrible billing options

On the plus? The game is clearly looking significantly better for 2.0 and the content on the PDFs shows me THEN, I'd be willing to pay for the game.

The people who want to pay now are either just invested too much into the game or are blind fan boys.

Ultimately there are still huge scathing problems with the game; but people are willing to throw money at SE.

I don't mind that they are willing to support SE, because I want XIV to succeed as well. I just have a slightly less clouded view.

Several crafts are still nearly or completely useless, the "mini-games" for crafting and gathering are atrocious and make me physically and mentally ill.

For $15? No. UI latency and position latency are my biggest turnoffs and is a cold hard fact that not even those who claim that are still having "fun" with the game can dispute.

I've NEVER played an MMO that had latency built into the game as a means to combat RMTs who are going to attempt to break the game anyway. I guess some people have gotten used to it - I haven't.

Think about it, FF11 came out in korea a year before it did in the USA and elsewhere, how do you think they felt? Technically we would be getting the game now if it was a year earlier in korea, I would say yes.

The fact that they layed out that 2.0 was coming was a blessing and a complete screw up. It got everyone back on board, it brought some new light to the outside players that it may just come back to life at some point.

Of course telling us everything will be great then, all of the stupid little problems will be gone, great new features will be there (but only when 2.0 is here) then asking for us to pay for a year.....huh?!?

Tell me its a beta then tell me to pay for it....very poorly planned.

yes i would pay. As a new player there is a lot of content to be done.

2.0 beta doesn't start until Oct 2012 btw. We'll have new servers and a new client created from a different engine, how can this possibly be a beta for 2.0 when the same technologies won't even be involved. Riddle me that Batman?

But would you play for 8 bucks a month (our current offer with the 180-day discount) or $10 (the monthly discount)? It'll never be $15 unless you have multiple retainers.

I am looking forward to the server upgrades above most other things. Even content. The removal of much of the server based issues will be of tremendous help.

If it launched like this, and I still had everything at level 1. Where I would be ignorant of the issues with server lag on Ifrit, and the tedium of the NM farming for Moogle King. Yup, I certainly would.

It's alpha, where basics like battle mechanics are being tested. Can't wait to stress test the 2.0 servers during our beta free trail this time next year.

No matter how much % of this game it is, some people will never feel its the full game. Thats why fee's needed to take place. People are cheap and happy when things are free. Honestly, why pay for something that you could get free. /shrug

Yes, but the best thing is, I did pay already, when I signed up, I bought enough Crysta for 6 months, and thus am cashing that in now. With the discount I was still covered after giving some away for the Japan Relief Fund.

Not really, even with the game as it was at launch, yeah i wanted lag fixes and some other system stuff but mostly i wanted more content, more places to go people to see, events to happen, i wanted to explore and find something, some one and have the game draw me into its story rather than do a short cutscene quest every 10 levels, although they werent horrible.

a good portion of people at launch when asked in questionarie said they wanted content, that was without having everything at 50 and nothing left to do at all. The game still lacks content even today, its basically a grind fest, and while the grind isnt the most hardcore grind out there, its pretty one dimensional.

rpgs are usually event focused, you go somewhere and do something to see whats happening to some person or whats going to happen next, you have great stories along the way, but the way this mmo is designed, you basically go into a training room for 90% of the time so you can do something interesting 5% of the time. While the exploration of your powers and growth and what you will be able to do is an intreresting part of a game i think they have mistakenly abandoned the rpg elements that tie it together and drive you forward.

essentially they need to connect the progression to progressions and engagement to the story/world. its been a problem since day one, and its still not remedied, and i dont think it will be till 2.0 even if they have decided to do so, because they probably dont want to create content they will probably need to destroy later.

The current version is "playable" and nostalgia from FFXI would have silenced my rational decision making process.

No because after going thru a year and a half of this with no serious progress on 1.0 other than being a battle mechanics testing server, I am bored and frustrated. The game never felt right and when 2.0 was announced it was clear that 1.0 is not the real game. I stop pretending this was the real FFXIV a long time ago. You are only testing battle mechanics against time-killing bosses and quests until 2.0.

Well, this is going to be terribly one-sided since people who aren't planning on paying probably aren't showing up in the forums anymore.

Is 1.20 better than release? I'd say so.

But when it comes to being good enough to pay for, you're not really paying for a full game. There isn't much substance to the world. There aren't a lot of stories or quests to sink your teeth into. There aren't any strong characters in the game you'd pick for inclusion in Dissidia, as one interview noted. There are still responsiveness issues that can't be fixed without a revamp. We're still using a controller UI in a mouse platform world.

What you're really paying for, in my opinion, is a leg up when the real game starts in 2.0 and everything that's lacking is finally set to right. But I certainly wouldn't want to introduce someone new to FFXIV and expect them to pay for it until then.

Absolutely. I was discussing the game the other day on another board and someone reminded me about the random SP rewarded during battle. I had completely forgotten about that horrible system and it feels absurd that we actually had to experience that.

If it was released in the state it is in now, and then we had a year of content updates on top of that we'd have a pretty solid game.

Assuming yoshi was at the helm from the start of course.

Though I will not be paying in January, if the game had been released as it is now and everyone was starting fresh, I think I would have. The game would not have hemorrhaged players as badly, and the planned patches could have helped a lot to keep my interest over time. As it is now though, it feels like SE is playing catch-up in terms of content and is perpetually behind.

The game is still incomplete in some ways, but I like the world and the graphics and the general feel of it enough that I would have paid even so.

Personally? Yes, this is plenty for a Vanilla release. If powerleveling wasn't such an issue the game as is if launched would have kept me busy for a few months.

So sans powerleveling, Yes I would pay for this game if it was released in this state: Also the reason I will pay when they ask to subscribe.

Most games that had an expansion were complete and did not have a billion things wrong with it before the expansion was released.

/yes, because it would probably be a lot better had it been released in this form. Starting off with current battle mechanics would have been perfectly fine, and there's be enough content to make the game feel more adventurous.

As is right now, as a sudden shift, it's debatable.

I'm still on the fence about it. My biggest complaint is Yoshida still hasn't tried to come up with a way to discourage class stacking. Which I find kind of sad from a producer that plays MMOs as a hobby.

every other expansion changes fundemental combat, crafting, basic features, server structure, graphics engine, coding, online ifrustructure scraps the entire current world and story (and possibly content)
