It was confirmed in the recent live letter that it's coming in 4.1, it isn't just a design concept anymore.

I'm just hoping they can do Castrum and Praetorium, so it's finally possible to get a full run of those two.
probably only available for palace of the dead. Hope they make it available for all content even upcoming, it should be the players choice if they are going to chose the squadron over real people. Nobody forced to go with squadrons but I shouldn't be forced to go with other people if I don't feel like it on that day. If it's only available for things like fates (open world content) they might as well not bother developing it, in my personal opinion.
You know if they do this I hope people have to gear their Squad first, like retainers, instead of just leveling them up.
This may help for older content where queues are too long. As the game grows we get more and more dungeons with the old ones getting longer queues. This may help newcomers clear the old content faster. It all depends how exactly will they implement this feature.
Truth be told, I'm not seeing too much use for newcomers.
Before you even get to the appropriate rank for squadrons, you need to have cleared Aurum Vale (i.e. be level 47+). And then you still have to grind them up, which takes a while as well.
Maybe in another few expansions. At the moment, they'd be useful for HW dungeons at best and that's assuming a 10 level increase and the person not rushing through the MSQ.
They would also have to give them jobs, or make it where all of a squadrons moves generate 5X enmity than your player. Then npcs don't dodge aoes( ex chocobo companion /pets) so coding for that would be required or your squad would have to have crazy high health pools or auto potion.
My thought was they were adding in new dungeons that you can do with your squad for rewards, not old dungeons as most new players don't even get high enough rank to unlock squadrons until they are lvl 60.
I LOVE this idea! At first I thought itd be really dumb and makes no sense and would further push apart the community and promote more solo play than team play that is expected from an MMO, but I think this would be a great way to help people solo through old content that just isn't being run anymore?
How about we ask the devs to meet us in the middle. Allow us to create our own squad member with our own design.
I know for some who talk about 1.0. I took mine with me from FFXI.
My Vinja loves Great Katanas. So he is already ready to switch over to SAM once 4.0 launches. =D

Took me 2x 4 weeks! (I have 2 chars) till I got my WISHED Squadron Members(All female Au'Ra and Miqotes <3) and lv50 cap ;o
And I dont think some1 would wait 4weeks for a dungeon ;o
Edit: It would be great to have our squadrons in all dungeons with me! *O*
Maybe in Coils too so I can finaly finish this...? Since Soloing is impossible to clear and getting a party is like 0% chance
Am I the only one who is thinking if I wanted to play with 3 other npcs I could fire up a ff offline game? This feels self defeating and even if popular at first glance seems negative to the health of a mmo.
I think FF14 is a great game, and i enjoy my time with it, but it is by design an offline RPG with online elements. That is, it is not FF11 or Eve etc etc. It's not genuinely online first. It's a single player offline RPG except for that your party members in battle are real people. And you can make friends with them and text with them and stuff. Now .. i don't mean to open a can of beans here, but just my thoughts on the matter.
This game won't likely ever move towards being a primarily online experience. The creation of, and long term refinement of AI is the ultimate step towards allowing this game to exist indefinitely beyond the age where its active population can support its content.
I think people are reading too much into this one, it will at most just be for outdated content....and even within that be designed around a squadron involved system. (such as it rewards you "specifically" for a squadron use, and not being able to do something like leveling roulette without other players)
They will never replace actual players because the devs aren't going to program like how we run dungeons. Squadron tanks will pull one pack at a time and healers will rarely touch cleric, if they even have it. That alone slows down the run considerably. Not to mention makes it painfully boring. I think I'd take the 15-20 minute queue.
It would be nice for the 2 Lv50 MSQ dungeons with 7 squad members where everyone just rushes it! Cause I plan to start a new character sometime on a new server just not sure what server I should start again on. and I don't want those runs to be messed up with cutscene/running, walking to catch up/cutscene... etc cause I plan to broadcast from the start of this new Character to a certain point and I don't want those MSQ runs chopped up. Or I would have to try a PF and say no rushing or skipping and will be watching cutscenes and hope no one rushes it! And I still don't' think that would even work cause everyone is in a hurry so yeah I think the squad would be good for those and others.
I'm sure I'll have to wait for them to level up too.
I also think I see more DPS using squads then Di. So then might get to a point where there are fewer DPS in queues anymore.
Squadrons would be cooler if it didn't feel like team-based Retainer Ventures.
It should of felt more like an adventure. With each GC having it's own focus on Hamlets.
Basically Squadrons should of been about protecting the Hamlets. When you reach lv 50 you would have access to the HW Hamlets and at 60 the SB ones.
But basically the idea would be with your group of 8 you could send them out on mission and then come back with notifications to do an instance that involved your Squadron(instance which up to 8 can enter and help with). But the basic idea would be about earning reputation with your GC and the other ones to unlock new items to buy or something.
That's what really grinds me about these concepts being implemented.
Retainers are single unit being sent out to get something, FC Airships are a time based send to multiple location to get certain items back and Squadrons are 4 members performing a task to obtain rewards and possibly an item among other things based on their traits.
Retainers could remain as they are.
FC Airships should of been about exploring and unlocking instances which would be open for the FC to do for a set amount of time.
-Like imagine going to area 21-23-24 and the airship comes back and says "Something of Interested has appeared"
--Then on the FC airship map you would have a set amount of time to explore the area and could explore it until either your FC cleared it or time ran out
-With Squadrons it could of been about sending your Squad to keep Eorzea safe and occasionally helping them out via instances that would appear witha set time limit 24-48hrs to complete.
if i can customize with character creations, rename, change class and lvl them then yeah i would be interested and call this my own personal npc and send for ventures.
based on what we saw in the live letter video the squads will not be available for dungeons that we can que for solo in duty finder but operate on a completely different system, one that is built specifically around the functionality of the AI/NPC. this meaning that they won't give you a clear for things, but allow you to replay existing dungeons once you've unlocked the feature for your squad and the dungeons themselves as was shown only appear to benefit your squads and not you personally. to me honestly this sounds pretty useless to us.. with all we get are glamour and emotes as a reward :T but this could just be a testing phase for the devs to collect data and feedback on the feature from the player base. so the best thing to do if we want to be able to do more with this system is to try it out, then suggest or criticize on where to go from there.
personally i'd love to be able to have an option when opening the duty finder which allows us to use our squad for a select duty( there will be limitations of course, cause it is alot of work making the AI perform optimally) and then having the squad option go on like a 1-2hr cooldown until you can use them again. this would greatly help newer players clear content they are denied access to cause of the low interest in old content. also i think they should allow us to unlock squads after joining a GC rather than having to grind agonizing hours worth of fates or gc leves just to rank up and unlock the feature.
I just hope I can level my classes with my lala-squad >: D
Nope. Some of us asked for this. We wanted squadrons to be deeper and now they are! WOO!
Sorry this wasn't made for you, but keep in mind your glamour fixes (supposedly ) are in development as well. This IS an actual request, don't belittle it just because you personally didn't ask for it.
Yea. . it's like if they wanted to design it with the 4-24 FC member in mind they could of easily designated each sector by a recommended party size or ever party size limit and had the airship unlock content that players could explore.
Heck they could of even made it a weekly thing, once you found a location you have a whole week to explore it before you lose sight of it and have to explore again to find it. That type of engaging game-play would of had people still use FX airship regularly to open areas and then proceed to invite others who aren't even in FC to join in for loot.
Im a bit disappointed that you cant do any of the old ex primals with them would save alot of time on farming if u could
I agreed with the rest of what you said, but not this part.
"Welcome, new recruit. For joining us we'll immediately start you off by giving you command of an entire squadron of other members of our company." It just doesn't fit somehow. Being put in command as a lieutenant makes sense. Being put in command as a newly joined private third class doesn't. It's the sort of thing that should involve some ranking up to unlock.
Once you unlock the option to turn in old dungeon gear for seals, making them becomes pretty trivial.
Fates, Hunting Logs, Crafting and Gathering trade-ins, GC Leves, and low level duty roulettes throw seals towards you at a high rate until that point, so it's moot. It takes effort, but not that much.
still lots of grinding required to obtain the seals :/ and the cost to rank up increases each time, on top of that to level your squads also costs seals. for a new player this would take way more time than is necessary time that could be better spent getting caught up in the mainstory and leveling a job. with squads being open to them earlier they can invest seals into leveling the squad especially if in time we are allowed to use them to advance in the game and level alt jobs :)
Well, don't forget that the seals you earn scale up from most methods to earn them. As example, a gear drop out of Satasha is only worth about 100 seals, but a single piece of gear in Stormblood dungeons is worth well over 2000 seals. The higher your level as a crafter or gatherer, the more seals you earn from the items requested.
The game also forces you to complete hunting log tiers (which gives thousands of seals) and to complete certain dungeon quests that give stacks of seals instead of gil.
Like I said, you have to work on it and grind a bit, but it isn't that difficult.
