This really is the least of anyones issues in DS if you ask me =(
My advice on your issue OP:
-Accept and make peace that people, even when given a request, will not hand you your item.
-Since you can't change the system, you can only stack the odds in your favor by playing the class for the item.
-Accept and make peace that in said system, particularly 24man, you cannot efficiently gear yourself in comparison to guaranteed gearing like the tomestone system. Not only you have to compete with people but you also have to contend with the loot table. Imagine running DS 14 times for a particular casting gear, only for it to show four times, twice lost to need roll, once lost to greed roll. Ironically, I managed to snag it through a greed roll on the fourth time.
It is appreciative that you have gone into these Dun Scaith letting the rest of the party know what you were after. Earlier I was preemptively collecting leveling gear in The Aery for Red Mage and Samurai. At one point I obtained an item that another party member was specifically wanting to obtain, but I didn't know until after the item had dropped into my inventory. It was something I needed, but I would have been willing to pass had I known in advance. Point is, when I see someone announce that they are specifically trying to obtain something I will most likely be willing to pass on that item. Not everyone will do that, but by kindly making your request known you will find players that are willing to set aside their own greed which should improve your chances of obtaining the items you desire.
You don't understand how retainers work, and that makes me sad
Not "it" I'm gearing "my retainers" plural
Uhh yeah... but that's in the future! I'm actually playing the game right now. So other than demonstrating your ability to state the obvious, what is your point?
If it weren't for the chance to get some 260 gear, I wouldn't have run DS twice today. I didn't get any drops, and neither did the 3 other BLMs I saw in full 270 gear, but by us being there we helped other players get their gears & clears. I didn't even bail after the 6th wipe, but what do I know I'm just playing the game EXACTLY THE WAY IT WAS DESIGNED.
Moreover, you didn't even need to explain yourself because you are entitled to the gear (if you win the roll) for whatever purposes you deem fit. You can do whatever you like with your retainers, using whatever gear you won from any content in the game. If you want to gear them in i260 gear even though you have i270, that is your right.
I ran into this this morning when I was trying to catch up on gear. Was running Void Ark. In one run, a caster lotted on a piece that wasn't an upgrade like it would have been for me. I lost the roll. Did it suck? Sure, but I didn't bother complaining about it. The Lore was still benefitting me.
I don't get the way of thinking of some people in this game.
I played several mmo and in everyone rolling need on something for selling/desynth/etc could have led you to get a ninja tag/ban.
Even today I had a proof of why some people think they're allowed to roll need even if they're bis, while instead other players(same job) would actually require it instead of grinding tokens/scripts.
Needed it by mistake ? Cool man, that can happen.
Needed it because you want the shiny glamour ? Right, not my cup of tea, but go ahead.
Needed it for an unknown reason you don't even know,or for something that COULD happen in the FUTURE ?Step back and reconsider your move.
If a lvl 270(sometimes mentors) rolls need on items he/she doesn't require and doesn't give an explanation, then I click on the blacklist button as it seems the only solution in this game.
The ninja loot-ban should be mandatory, but if SE seems fine with the anarchy spreaded through cross-servers parties then be my guest.
This kind of thing (people looting stuff they don't really need) doesn't happen as much when you play with a more localized community. It's the same problem with people that high their identity on the internet and troll people relentlessly. Do those same trolls act this way when everyone knows who they are? Probably not, in fact, they are probably relatively tolerable human beings. The whole thing is related to the fact you'll never see the people in your Dun Scaith again most likely. It brings out the worst in people. As long as people can just randomly queue up with strangers whenever they feel like, they aren't going to feel compelled to behave beyond what is required of the game system itself sadly.
Side note though, while you may assume the worst intentions of this person that "ninja-looted" they may also assume your intentions were nefarious as well even if you were nice about it. People are so untrusting these days in games. I really miss the "golden age" of mmos where people were a bit more worried about how they were perceived.
I will say-- it is easier to empathize with the OP if you don't do the highest endgame raids or craft. If you play for only a couple hours a day, I imagine it would be really frustrating seeing people win the gear that you would be ecstatic to have and use, knowing full well they will probably only use it for glamor or trade it in for GC seals in SB. When you cut yourself off from content that gives gear, (no matter what your reason is for not doing it) your avenues to reaching the ilvl cap diminish. I respect everyones right to complain about what they want to complain about. I personally don't roll on stuff that I can't use or that isn't an upgrade for me for the higher end content. Dungeons are another story-- I roll on everything in dungeons so I can turn it in for seals to buy things like ventures and crafting materials. I understand the frustration of the OP-- but we all play the game for different reasons. I know ppl that just like collecting armour sets for fun, and others that don't even bother to max out tome currency-- they just wear crafted gear for most of a patch cycle. I do hope OP that you can put your frustrations aside and accept the fact that not getting a piece of gear that you want will be a pretty insignificant problem in the long run, although it seems like a major irritant at the moment.
I don't assume or accuse blindly, but I know because I asked and got a smoky reply, hence no reason for rolling something that me, or other 2 players would have found useful. It's not a matter of gears Cherie, but of attitude and reading your line is how I perceive those people, that is acting without rules as after all no one will say a word to them.
And sticking with Ophelia's reply that's true about the little time online. Joining and finding yourself in those situation turns your interest off for sure and force people to stick with small groups more than enjoying what the community could offer.
Because there are way more uses for drops here. I know what you're saying, in a game like the last version of WoW I played. There was using it, selling it, or transmogrification. That's it.
Here? Desynth and GC turn-ins are NOT insignificant, and any given piece could be used for them. The culture is different, because there is actually good use for any drop.
I do actually need whatever drops I can get, because I actually need desynth and turn-ins. These features change the landscape dramatically.
