The path of sword and shield of course, what other choice is there?
This thread makes me want to hold a sword in each hand, one in the mouth and one in the tail so I don't have to pick one.
No they're not. They're a ranged caster only.

F: Will Red Mage’s auto attack be melee or ranged?
Y: It is a range job,
I'll lv up and probably play both, but it's more likely that i'll "main" SAM.
I used to be meh about RDM, before they announced it, but since they showed it, it looks fun.
it will have the same gcd as every other job...
i guess you mean the heavy hitting skills, having a charge-up time - not all skills will have that, or it would be like melee brd/mch.
I think Yoshi would have stated that, if that was the case, but he clearly stated a ranged job. And in the RDM showing, it shows the RDM casting a spell which gives the animation of the light line hitting the mob, followed by the "melee attack". Looks like a spell animation to me. Also the RDM will be using caster gear, if it has any melee attacks, what will give them melee attack power?
I wanted to play SMN in the closed beta, or at launch, but the job was not available and the only caster in the game was BLM. I view SMN as my main caster job. I will unlock both the new jobs, the RDM because, finally another caster!, and SAM because it looks cool and I also love swords DPS classes in other games. But I will wait a few patches for the new jobs to get fixes because I'm sure they will be broken. I will level them up later.
it's been stated that it uses high speed positioning to move between melee and ranged.
It has a rapier and crystal, that can be combined into a staff, or used as rapier, so you use both melee and ranged magic skills.
It will use int for both melee and magic skills, to simplify things, just like NIN uses dex for mudras, melee jobs using str for ranged skills, MNK using str for self heal, etc.
I'm looking forward to trying RDM and hopefully it will be fun to play. The design intention (spells + melee attacks + high speed positioning) is 100% what I'd want to main but I'll have to wait and see what kind of rotation and special abilities they've given the job. It's also a stylish job so that's a bonus.
SAM looks unique and stylish too but it's not what I'm looking for atm.
Again, why would Yoshi state it was a ranged class if that was the case? Until I see hard proof that states otherwise, that's I'm going by.

"Equipment for remote magic DPS (head / torso / hand / leg / foot) Remote magic DPS includes mage magazine / majutsutor / black mage / summoner plus red mage added at patch 4.0
Because it's primarily a ranged class that only uses melee attacks as a punctuation or finishing move type of thing. People aren't making up the melee attack thing, by the way. The post you quoted is almost word for word what was shown in the slideshow at the fan fest where they announced Red Mage. What some people ARE doing, however, are taking the known melee component and running with it hard, turning it into a major component of what the job does. That interpretation of it is not going to be the case. Here are the actual slides:

It's like saying that DRG is ranged job, because it has bunch of ranged skills; It's a melee job with ranged skills. RDM is a ranged job with melee skills.
DRG ranged skills are still str based (not dex) and RDM melee skills will be int based, because Yoshi wants to keep it simple - it would be annoying if DRG ranged skills were dex based ya?
Well you have the proof there in the 2nd pic that Mhaeric showed.
You should watch the trailer, it shows how RDM hybrid skills will work, it's primarily a caster with some melee skills.
That by itself is not a new concept, all ninja mudras except for fuma are ranged, are elemental damage but scale off DEX. All melees except for monk also have 1 physical ranged skill including tanks.
Samurai, been waiting since 1.0 for this. Will be playing Red Mage on my alt though.
No I mean like Drg vs monk and ninja, I come from maining a monk and monk and ninja do not have the same as other classes once Huton and gl3 are up. Personally I don't see Sam as a speed class from what was said and shown at fanfest. But time will tell how it's going to play ^^
I've wanted a sword wielding melee DPS for as long as I've played this game so I will inevitably be going SAM. Unless, of course, the running/walking animations are similar to the NIN ones...
Both. Samurai for my main character and Red Mage for my other. ^^
I'm going Samurai Champloo on Omega's butt! :D
I'm probably going to go RDM since I enjoy ranged classes. RDM might also be that class that helps me adjust to a melee class some day.
Or have you charging into your death. :p
On that note: I expect a lot of complain about Samurai's Charge attacks lacking "Mobility" and Red Mage Melee Combat being a double edge sword when going into melee combat with Mage type gears.
Prepare the Popcorn for 4.0!
I actually really really want to play both... is that possible?
I'm not particularly excited about either job. I WAS excited for RDM - until I learned that they were making it a ranged caster, just like the two other ranged casters we already have (five others, if you include DPSing healers). Was pumped for a melee mage, but all we get is a couple dart-in attacks. Eh, who knows, maybe they'll impress me and I'll turn my attitude around later.
As it stands, I guess SAM is a bit more interesting to me. They're definitely playing up a lot of Samurai tropes with that one, and it looks visually quite cool.
I am conflicted, I know that I will level them both to max level eventually, but I have not decided if its going to be the Samurai or the Red Mage first. I will wait till I know more about both classes. If Red Mage was a real hybrid class, then I would have picked Red Mage.
I'll try both, but am leaning towards RDM
However if either turns out to be another "press buttons in sequence as they light up" dps, my interest will instantly die.
I'll probably go play Paladin for a few months to avoid the 2 hour long DPS queues.
Good thing I use alts.
My Auri'll switch over to SAM while one of my Miqo'tes will switch to RDM. My main catgirl will remain a user of the Ninja arts.
i don't mind the Range Combat style since I usually favor Range combat over melee combat more. It also fills in the Range Sword job role which usually is a Sword Mage type of Job in most Fantasy games anyways.
They'll probably introduce the dedicated Melee Sword Mage later as we move to more magic involved areas in future Expansions.
From what was said you'll be doing a bit of the basic 123 combos anyways with Samurai as that job requires building up a type of Energy/Stack to spend on their Heavy Charge Attack skills which sounds similar to Warrior mechanic but require more consideration on when to use since the Skills need sometime to charge and players may not be able to move while the skill charges.
Red Mage seems to have a 123 set up as well but from what we seen there are a few off cooldown skills for weaving into combo and then the melee mechanic aspect as the finisher.
