I have like, 10 sets of Glamour, I just default to my Sky Pirate look because Manacutter is my favorite mount. Some folks are just happy with wearing the expensive or skimpy glamours, others take time in theirs. If they like it, why judge?
Why care? Anyway, I more worried about character customization and would love to have something similar to Aion/Blade and Soul here, IMO is the only way for unique characters.
Every outfit I wear needs a Chocobo Mask. I like how you can only tell my character's emotion through hand gestures and nods during cutscenes.
I don't even glamour my gear. I wear with pride the original look of my gear, even if it looks bad. I think glamour is one of the worst things in MMOs, but I am a minority.
I'm still wearing the replica high allagan tank top. On the one hand, I used to cringe because I was the cookie cutter tank (although I don't see it so much these days for some reason), on the other hand, trying to get the a8s top requires finding 7 other half-decent people willing to learn dead content with me...
My partner uses the sky pirate set, which you don't see so much any more, at least on my server. I like it, but I'm poor af. She has lots of gil to spend on glams, so she inevitably looks a hell of a lot more on point than I do.
Well, a unique glamour requires a unique mind. That's pretty rare and frequently not even socially desired IRL - go ahead and be "unique" at your next job interview, see how it goes >_>
I'm more surprised how many people "are" actually trying to make something unique.
Oh sweet jesus...a milfie lala goddess complete with glasses. Don't even care..Im turned on. Thankyou.
My perviness aside, think the OP was just making a general statement about the collective lack of diversity (ya, does kinda seem like 60% of people are just miqo's in girls dresses.) Personal taste is a factor ya.....but it DOES all kinda look the same.
...and now....im gonna go stare at those plump lala hips some more.
There's a reason why popular things are popular: it appeals to more people. It's neither bad or good. People who avoid something just because it's popular have the issues.
I also think the glamor system needs an overhaul. This game has some great armor but due to the inventory system you can't keep it all. I was very disappointed that a wardrobe system was not being considered and really hope that they change their mind. When I see new gear I think that looks good but I dont have the space to keep it. The cynic in me doubts that as it puts retainer subs in jeopardy and they love to change us extra in this game.
The lack of equip for glam on MB plays alot(head is the worst i think, they are non existant) and i don't know if there is an efficiant way on internet to catch the full list and pics of evry dungeon gear you can wear for your job, like a chararecter simulator...
I maybe wouldn't wear the Thavnairian bustier so much if there were actually more than like two or three pieces of glamour in the entire game with that kind of aesthetic.
Until then, I am not about to stop wearing my favorite clothes just because Sally-from-down-the-road has it on too.
If it looks cool, then why not? What matters is whether or not the player is happy. Myself, I absolutely loved playing with cosmetics in PSO2, always coming up with new combinations after they introduced layered wear. I aim mostly for the same in FFXIV, but the damn glamour restrictions keep me from going all the way. At least I was able to do something interesting with three different pieces of armor. Still trying to find a tiara to go with it.

The generic gear makes the best "casual like" appearance. You know, everyday clothing. You know what jeans look like on female Roe's? Fabulous, that's what. I'm still ways off getting them (Zidane vet reward)
I rather have my gear look good than "unique"...
And generally good looking gear does become fairly common for glamours so most of the time you can't look good and unique.
And also certain items are popular glamours... for obvious reasons...
While I am also sick of all these lewd cats and Au Ra running around with skimpy glamours and multi-colored Lightning hair, I know that my own looks / glamours are far superior, so I'm trying to ignore them as much as I can.
You ll always be the ugly of someone :o
I don't like generic lv.1 glamour pieces.
Hey, I'm pretty sure the Lore casting/healing head gear is a tiara.
I don't really pay attention to what everyone else is wearing. I just enjoy putting on items that I think my little lala self looks cool in.
Like My 2 doh wearing that nice little poncho.
I glam how I feal (Got at lest 2 sets for all 4 of my main geared/used classes & 1 for crafting & 1 semi-shaired set for Gathering... & a few extra's that I barely use & can't bring myself to toss) heck my PLD's only using the High allag tank chest replica at moment cause I just crafted it 2 weeks ago (& it semi-matches the FF11 cross-over headband due to its small prema-red... & I use the High allag shield replica as glam). its been about 2 patches since I've seen my "main" MCH glam on anyone & 3 since I've seen my "main" WHM's, which is sky pirtate top. MNK's 1st glam is mostly lv1 crap so its still everywere, survivor shirt, & it used to be MCH's, using Uranus coat now cause I loved the origional... I wanna have 1 glam set for all but can't help going diff for each battle set every so often, its so tempting & aluring... & I'm indecisive.
Who cares what random people select for their glamour? It has 0 bearing on you and is a matter of theor taste. /shrug
I had a friend like you in WoW, but instead of transmog his concern was mounts. He spent a fortune on the black market auction house to get Invincible -- Arthas's horse -- but when more people started to get it, he felt like his money was wasted.
He only found value in things no one else had, and that seems like an unfortunate way to live your life.
I don't often go for too "unique" glamours because a lot of the unique stuff is an eyesore in my opinion. Think giant feathery obnoxious hats like casters and bards/machinists often have.
The game really needs more low profile customization options.
I feel as though they have been actively trying to add more 'everyday' gear with the survival set (ok, most of it) and a few of the other recent lv1 glamour items. Personally, since everyday clothing on a 2m-tall elezen isn't to my taste I still miss access to the female-restricted items with no male equivalent like the bustier set. There's nothing else quite like it which is why it's so popular in the first place; add more thavnairian-style pieces and more people will likely mix and match them.
Odd...On my server I've seen a ton of unique Glamour's....
me personally i'm costantly playing around with the gear on my female alt and if I can dye it, I dye it grape purple (my Instagram and Tumblr follower love seening her in grape purple) my main male on the other hand I tend to put in the latest gear depending what looks good in raid, dungoen or tome gear

I'm pretty sure that unique may not be possible with the number of glamour options we have, especially for some styles.
You want to wear a thighboot that doesnt poof out at the top? Not many options for that. I do not subscribe to the idea that you cannot dress the way you want since too many people also use it.
I use 6 of the items on the top 15 list. If other people use them too, so be it. I use over 100 different pieces of gear in 32 different glamours across 2 characters. Less than 10 of those pieces are used more than once, none of them more than twice. I am sure, there is at least one other person somewhere who also uses most of them at least once in their glamours.
Maybe, the more popular pieces are popular since many people think they look good. Not sure that I would be very happy if I was told that I had to use ugly clothing and gear only, just so I would look different.
What's the top 15 list?
I personally despise the "everyday modern clothing"
The game for me started as a fantasy game with steampunk elements (I started august 2015). The 1.0 gear looks great and can be mixed and still look like a functioning set. I wish we had more gear in that "realistic" yet still eorzean look. The way the different leathers shine and the different cloth textures blend is really well done imo, despite the low resolution. It saddens me to see the new gear, each looks like they try to outdo the other with a "Cool" factor. No gear is made with the 1.0 style anymore. Way too many unnecessary bells and whistles and belts are are added. Why not make some more gear in the simple and charming style of the low lvl gear?
The 1.0 gear also seems to have been designed more from an individual piece viewpoint. The items werent made to only look good in a single set, they can be mixed as you please. They feel like an actual item i could imagine someone in a fantasy setting would craft, or order.
Fashion is great and all but it really kills the mood for me to have every set include a tuxedo or tie in some way.
You know you have a great glamour on your character when a teen with raging hormones starts to hit on her, literally. I wish i was joking. It felt so awkward.
I just wear the field commander coat..I'd love it to be dye able..but I like it anyway..plus not a lot of people have it.
I've been complimented on my semi-permanent glamour a few times. A lot of people ask me where I got my coat, I tell them. I don't care if they use it. It isn't exclusive to me.

Honestly the reason is that there aren't all that many good options that are accessible/relatively easy to get without spending a lot of money (either in-game, or irl mog station). Over time it will continue to improve as they add more stuff, but it's gonna need to not be gated behind really difficult content or massive time sinks for you to see an abundance of it. I like my current glamour because it feels "Final Fantasy-ish", and has a signature sort of JRPG appearance. It was gated behind content that took time to get, but wasn't overly difficult, however a lot of the nice pieces require tons of time to get.
If you see more people using the same skins rather than taking advantage of the numerous options available, its probably due to aesthetic tastes. That's my reason at any rate.
I am not content with most of the styles offered in the game. So many armor pieces are pseudo-dresses with unnecessary dangling bits, skirts, etc. Too many chest pieces are poofy robes or look like some old fashioned aristocrat. Even the plate style armors suffer from being pseudo-dresses half the time. Males in particular have very few options that don't fall under "long tunic", "poofy robe", "basically a dress". I'm a huge fan of Rupaul's Drag Race... I just don't want my male Miqote looking like he's going to lip-synch for his life. Also keep in mind that class/job requirements on gear can limit your options for an outfit you like. That's another reason why you might see the lvl 1/unrestricted glamour gear very often.
I like the starter male Miqote set coupled with the Lominsan Soldier's Boots to get rid of the poofy part of the pants. This outfit is great for a swashbuckler/roguish type look and doesnt sport too many needless accents and dangling bits. It shows skin without being barechested. It's masculine but sexy and looks great with its default coloring or when dyed.
I like Uraeus Coat for my Healing jobs because it looks great dyed white and shows some skin on my male Miqote without being bare chested. It does bug me that its a long coat (borderline pseudo-dress), but the overall look is aesthetically pleasing and the pop of red with the white is thematically appropriate for my WHM. If the coat was only waist length I'd be absolutely in love with it.
The Wind Silk Coatee is one of the few chest pieces that isn't a long tunic or pseudo-dress. I use this (dyed black) coupled with the Thancred modish pants and boots for my gladiator glamour currently. It's not quite as tight as I'd like but it looks good and, again, isn't a dress.
The Extreme Survival Shirt is a relatively recent and welcome addition to chest pieces that aren't friggin dresses that looks good by default and dyed.
I use the Light Steel Galerus chest glamour for my Marauder class currently. Not 100% sure I'll stick with it but it shows skin (a bit more than I want) and has some cool metal bits. Most importantly though... IT'S NOT A FRIGGIN DRESS. It also isn't overwhelming like much of the armor in this game can be.
TLDR: If you're seeing lots of the same glamours being used, its because the majority of people like those styles more than the alternative, less popular options. I also believe people care less about "looking like everyone else" and care more about "being happy with how my character looks". If the devs want to encourage more diversity in glamour use, then a) we need more non-class specific options, b) more options that aren't poofy or "dress-like" and c) more options (specifically chest options) that aren't overly accented with dangling bits and useless flaps of cloth (I'm looking at you Thancred modish top that would be aweosme if not for those green lenghts of cloth on the sides).
A lot of it is personal taste. for a few of my jobs I find the stuff I like to be an incredibly small selection.
my paladin for example is still glamoured in a gallant surcoat partly because so much of the tanky stuff of late sports dumb ass capes or full length coaty designs which i'm personally not a huge fan of. so when it comes to body pieces my options are rather limited. be nice to see more options without long coats or capes.
my healers used to rock the old demon set from world of darkness because again not a huge fan of a lot of the newer sets that have come out since. would love to see more magey dalmatica type bodies rather than endless coats and robes. the 250 Alexandrian healer set isn't too bad currently glamoured onto my scholar. just wish it was dyable.
my ninja is glamoured in the 210 iga because it's probably the only set in the game that actually looks ninja like mines dyed pure white because being the only ninja looking glamour set its seems a popular one for ninjas to use for glamour so instead of using the same dark colors everyone else does i went the other way and used white. .. this also kinda falls under the same issue i have with tanks. a lot of the ninja garb sports dumb capes or long coats which i'm not a big fan of.
and my blm rocks the prototype Alexandrian set which i personally really like. and before that it was replica allagan glamour. kinda also wish blm had a few more dalmatica style bodies to choose from.
all in all there isn't much i actually like glamour wise. it seems like 90% of the body pieces around stuff are full length coats and capes and some of them carry way tooo much bling nd addons. the hell fire set would have been a bit better if it didn't have all them huge spikes all over it for example, glamoured that straight away cos of all the clipping issues with shields and stuff. but that's also why my character doesn't have long hair..
Edit. oh hey Nicodemus_Mercy has basically said the same thing just minutes before me. :)
Liking something because others like it is silly. I think just as bad to dislike something because others like it. I'd rather see someone wearing something generic if that's what they think looks good than someone who limits their choices for the sake of being different.
Identity is good and standing out can be fun, but I don't think you should make aesthetic decisions based on what other people are doing. That's just my own take anyway.
This is why I wish for cross class glamouring. I love thigh high boots but the sleekest design are the Expeditioner's Boots. Everything else for MNK is barely knee high, or too bulky. Meanwhile DoM have thigh highs for days. And really nice coats. I want to punch things, but I wanna do it in style. Would also like to WAR in a cute dress or nice skirt, but nope.
You have some wiggle room when putting together an outfit, but it's still limited.
