i don't even know what garo is
It reminds me of thunder cats fused with power rangers
The whole Garo part of the live letter was a little cringe worthy to me. That being said, Garo is to someone else what Dr Who is to me so to those excited about this event, I hope you enjoy every moment of it. :)
I don't know what Garo is, but all that is so cool especially those mounts! I have a need for at least one of them! :O However I really hope PVP will not be the only way to get anything from the event. :/ I've never done PVP before and certainly can't get anyone to teach me. But if I can use Gold Saucer, I certainly would use that way for them. Don't too care for the armour, but I definitely want one those horses!
I wish the music when riding the GARO mounts will be the same than in the trailer.
In Japan, many things are popular that aren't popular over here, like Yokai Watch and adult-oriented tokusatsu with opening themes performed by JAM Project. The makai knight armor and priest leathers are no more out of place than some of the incredibly dumb outfits people concoct entirely on their own using pieces already in-game. If you hadn't had a trailer, you might not have known they were a reference -- and it had a trailer to appeal to all the people, even those unsubbed or who have never played, who love Garo. Or Zero, in YoshiP's case, since he got to take pictures with Ray Fujita.
So how long until people complain about the dyeable armor being PvP exclusive?
I think the Garo gear and the mounts are a lot more tame compared to some of the gear (mainly PvP) and mounts we're given
I'm sold if I can get that sick transformation effect as an emote and use it with my gear sets.
Shouldn't be an issue? They're removing GC restriction from Frontlines. You buy the gear via wolf-marks and since it's a collab event, the que times should be near instant (which was the biggest gripe with pvp anyways)? So as long as you're at least queing up for the stuff you will get your credits to buy the gear. This is also the perfect chance to get the pvp mounts for people who missed out on stuff like the Aero-Dynamics and ADS along with Field Commander coat.
People asked for them to come up with creative ways to revive pvp and I feel this is a proper step in the right direction. You still win marks for just participating, so you will get your gear eventually and it encourages new players to finally dip their toes in the water.
Ok! Let me just get my fangirl freakout done here....OMGOMGOMGOMG GARO IN FFXIV! GARO IN FFXIV! I WANT EVERYTHING! Aaaaahhhhh! I thought the Amamiya thing was just gonna be for some neat boss designs, never did I think they would pull this outta their hats! HOLY CRAP! I will use Zero's blades for my ninja all day everyday! Give it to me Papa Square! GIVE IT TO ME NOW!
Ok, now that that's out of the way!
I actually think Garo crossing over makes way more sense then people give it credit for. Garo's themes all heavily revolve around Light and Dark and the delicate balance yet brutal battles between them. In his own world, Garo could be called a Warrior of Light since he is pretty much seen as a light of hope. (Hence why his golden armor has this slight radiance to it.) and overall, yeah, this is a pretty good crossover, the armors look great and I want Gouten (The golden horse.) like right now, RIGHT! NOW! Also please give me the transformation effect...it's so good!
I have a question. I noticed the PLD had no shield in that trailer. Will this event have no shield item? Are we getting the Emperor's New Shield? What is going on? Am I so overhyped I'm seeing shadows where there are none?
To the people that say 'I've watched the anime'...
Please, watch the tokusatsu series, specifically the first 2 seasons. All of the event stuff is based off that.
Some more info about the event:
Quote:
Garo collaboration
- Mainly PvP oriented. Get into PvP, leave some results, get points and use it to get event rewards.
- It's nothing like the previous Youkai Medal event.
- There will be no special motions for this event (as in emotes) because it might be overdone. The period of the event is said to be longer than Youkai Watch as well.
- Garo Mounts are achievement rewards.
I had no idea what Garo was before this and I don't particularly care to know more after--same as Yokai.
The armor is alright, I guess.
The mounts are nice, but not if I have to PvP for them.
Time to get into PvP.
Never heard of Garo. And frankly a PVP focused event sounds even worse to me than another FATE grind. >.>
The completionist in me will likely attempt it regardless. I hope the mount achievements aren't too hard.
I don't think they really expected people outside of Japan to be familiar with the show. Tokusatsu is mainly a Japanese thing, and while Tokusatsu has a very dedicated fanbase around the world the majority of western audiences haven't had much exposure to that outside of stuff like Power Rangers. Heck I'd be surprised if people here were familiar with Kamen Rider. This event is supposed to appeal to Japanese players first and foremost.
As Ultimatecalibur and others mentioned, another driving idea behind this is that it's a work of Keita Amemiya heralding his contributions to the latest 24-man raid, a veteran artist among many whose work has directly inspired much of Final Fantasy's visuals and most JRPGs for his dark fantasy designs. The Garlean legates for instance (and by extension, all the Darth Vader clones and Judges in the series), as well as many existing PvP sets like the Lionsmane/Liege set, takes direct influence by the Tokusatsu stuff by Amemiya and his contemporaries' designs (the late Yasushi Nirasawa, Tamotsu Shinohara and so on), I can't understate how influential their stuff has been to much of FF's darker visuals.
So it still goes back to this being a pretty Japanese-centric event, but highly relevant in behind the scenes artistry.
Didn't know about Garo until the announcement so I've been watching most of the live action stuff ever since. I wish I found out about it sooner considering I like things like Kamen Rider and Ultraman :c Haven't read the thread yet but I'll assume there's people saying it doesn't belong when in the grandscheme of things it wont effect Eorzea at all.
I know there's fans in here, I meant in general.
I'm only familiar with it because I'm really into Pretty Cure. Pretty Cure, Sailor Moon, and magical girl team things in general would have never existed without Kamen Rider and the Tokusatsu shows that came after it.
You know what I see? I see a PLD without a shield. Now PLD can't play without a shield, but it would be a real bother if SE ruined the image by forcing people to make do with some random shield that doesn't fit. Oh, I do so wonder what it is they might do about this to make it work...
(wishful thinking, I know. But as someone who already has 20 sets of super ultra bulky armor on standby one more set really doesn't matter to me at all.)
PvP gear?? Hahaha~ (Meanwhile I'm stacking 20k all time)
What is Garo? Never heard of it.
It's a Japanese Tokusatsu (Movies and TV Shows with a heavy emphasis on special-effects) Meta-Series, known for being much darker than other such series, being aimed at an older audience than its contemporaries. The general plot of most series comes down to a group of supernatural warriors called "Makai Knights" fighting against human-devouring demons called "Horrors".
PvP... barfbarfbarfbarfbarf.
I better be able to get those mounts from Gold Saucer. The armor looks dumb af so Idc about that, but I do want that black pegasus.
