Hmm, I only play casters and never hard target anything. Also, casting anything automatically unsheathes your weapon, so this isn't a problem for me. This is actually helpful for me if I'm reading it correctly since I sometimes accidentally hard target a mob while weaving (I use controller), effectively tethering me to it when I am trying to get away.
Well i also play blm, and seen Mr.Happy video. I think all you will need to do is deselect a target and not need to sheathe weapon? Perhaps i misread it.
More details are needed, if you will in fact follow enemies if they are moving (as caster for example)
Unless you're on melee range, you as a caster are never auto attacking, so nothing should change for you.
The gaze thing on Melee seems to be an issue if auto attack makes you face the target every time it goes off, if it doesn't then I think the translation was referring to attacks like Blighted Bouquet where auto attacks can get you killed and you cant look away to stop auto attacks.
Either way this is a very positive change regardless of the inconvenience it might bring, specially for console players, way too many casters on console have no idea there's a "face target" function they have to manually bind to a controller button to not lose casts when enemies go past the 90 degrees range, and don't get me started on melees on console and melees on pc using standard camera.
Pretty sure the change and note of caution about sheathing or de-selecting target means that having something targeted and in range will end up making your character face the target when it auto attacks. In order to actually turn around and avoid the gaze, you need to not be in a position to be auto-attacking the target.
I really can't believe they are actually going through with this change. This is just disappointing I guess if it's a blanket fix for pvp abuse.
I know what you mean, I worry too. There's 2 things called "Face Target" in the game. There's a setting in the menu that makes you automatically turn when using a skill/spell, and a keybind command (default to F on keyboard) that makes you follow your target.
This is the first one that we're worried about, the "automatically face target when using action" thing:

If it effects this, this change could mean that instant casts (procs like thundercloud, or just instant spells like ruin 2) will now be impossible to use unless you're strafing while facing the target. That menu option makes you turn to face your target when you use those instant casts, letting them go off without you having to stop and turn. This means if you're running away from a thing, you aren't facing the mob and you wont turn because of this change, so you can't use your instant spells. This also applies to instant skills that melee use; I don't think it'll effect them as much but it'll still be annoying.
