Marrying npcs.

Going off of this, how would they handle NPCs who are not dead, but that they are planning to kill off in a later patch? I can only assume SE has this story planned out far, far ahead from where we are currently. It would be rather disappointing for players to marry an NPC only for them to die later down the line. Restricting certain NPCs because they are planning on killing them would also be a no-go, because it could tip people off as to who might live or die. I can see this working with non-important NPCs, such as guildmasters etc, but NPCs with an important role may be difficult to implement.

That's precisely why this system should be based around relationships and not just romance. Bioware does it well enough in most of their games.

I don't think that they're opposed to a dating game (see the e3 interview ). They would likely be separate in some way from the MSQ characters just in case.

If they did it right, they likely would own even more of my time.

True true. Which is why I've accepted the fact that marrying npcs would be impossible because there's too many complications.

Retainers are NPC's, why not allow our characters to marry them? Thus giving them access to different quests/ventures and access to our personal/private quarters. If anyone else already suggested this, apologies.

^ thou it was sujested (here & in posts before) it is still a viable answer/addition cause I'd use one of my 2 if I could... because I find bonding to a RL person, in-game, disturbing personally (Friend in RL asked, declied for that reason)

Thanks for the link! Nice interview and it gives some hope they add dating elements. Japanese are very fond of dating games.

Can't tell if this is a joke thread and the OP is shading marriage equality.

I am in full agreement. Aeryka fell in love with Y'shtola from there first meeting and is still in love with her. She would be so happy if they could be eternally bonded.

From the terms used it's not completely clear, but I think what he's saying is that -

a) SE won't put a love story in the MSQ, meaning that they'll never force the player into such a storyline in order to proceed. Unlike, for example, Final Fantasy VIII where Squall is the main character and you don't get to choose whether or not he falls for Rinoa, in FFXIV the main character is your own creation so it would be disconcerting to have them involved with someone against your choice.

b) But, they're open to the idea of adding optional side content where your character could form a relationship with someone. Not in the near future, but it's a possibility.

After reading this, I've upgraded the probability of romance content happening a bit. Which I'm okay with, if it's more story-focused and includes actual plot/lore instead of being just a Fable-ish "marry anyone but they're all cardboard cutouts" system.

Marrying an NPC would be a little weird for some people who've already gone and done the whole Eternal Bonding thing.

I can see something like this happening on a Valentione Day event, where we don't essentially marry an NPC, but we get the chance to "date" them for a time, thus opening up new doors to deeper lore, or a backstory behind said characters. If that were to happen, I wonder what NPCs would be available. Would they allow us to chase after NPCs we met in the main story? Or would they introduce exclusive NPCs for said event? So many possibilities.

I don't mind this, but marrying NPC's isn't really something I'd want to happen, it seems a little odd in my personal opinion. It was a good thought though! I'm sure it would be interesting, just not in my personal taste.

No. I really like everything about a great majority of the NPCs and having them run off on some random, non-canon romance with anyone and everyone would be an insult to their characters and personalities in my opinion. I can't comprehend anyone having any genuine interest and respect for the characters they claim to like when they want to meddle in their story like that. They just enjoy the aesthetics and little more as far as I can tell. If they added some new characters created explicitly for developing relationships with(of varying degrees) then that'd be one thing, but not existing characters.

Kikoten's suggestion about a one time, non-meaningful date where you get to explore a character's backstory a little bit however.... that sounds good.

I feel like the best resolution for this would to make a swath of interesting characters that you could build a relationship with from scratch. We get our dating sim and our companion NPCs, AND it won't jeopardise MSQ characters or plot lines. Plus, it's totally optional.

Even though I would date Estinien in a minute, I feel taking this route would also allow the devs to show more details about certain aspects of lore that otherwise don't get much attention, specifically racial traits and histories on environments.

I'd like this to be a thing only so I can claim Tataru off of Wedge's grubby little hands.
