Marrying npcs.

With the growing acceptance of all varieties of marriage irl. I thought it would be interesting if players could marry npcs. I brought up the thought to players in-game when I was attending a wedding as a joke at first, but they seemed to really like the idea. o_o If this became possible, it would connect people more to the story, and make for some really interesting plot points. XD

If something like this were to happen, I doubt they'd write it into the main story due to the vast amounts of NPCs in the game. Unless you mean limiting this feature to specific NPCs, which would cause people to get upset if their favorite NPC wasn't included. Maybe they could add a fun little event or something, but overall there likely wouldn't be any story significance due to the amount of additional writing and work it would take.

"design your wife" create an NPC that will stay at your house, fc room, or appartment, and you can design like a retainer

Star Wars: The Old Republic does something like this. The storyline for each character class includes an optional romantic subplot that ends with your character getting married (if you so choose). It's similar to the developer's other, single-player games - Dragon Age, Mass Effect, etc. Players do seem to like it a lot, and I personally enjoyed it when I played since I think it added to the story.

That said, I don't know if such a thing would fit with FFXIV's style. The story so far is much more concerned with friendship/camaraderie than romance, despite the occasional moment of Ship Tease. Also, the Warrior of Light doesn't have much of a personality - the better to be a player avatar - so it would be difficult to write them a relationship where they had to do anything more than fight stuff and make a couple of vaguely emotive facial expressions.
