I've always wondered how a Lalafell and a Roegadyne armor can fit each other and how one costs the same as the other even thougg it uses 4-5 times the material, how strange.

Are you taking the 5-10% from base stats or from stats after the fact? If people want to exclude me because I have 7 less str than a Roe (even less if we assume the difference from Lalafell and Roe would be the most dynamic of the relationships) go for it. I fine with avoiding elitists who crunch numbers. Its not the only way to get things completed in a game. Being an elitist won't make your base stats higher by the way.
lol @ people who thought FFXI racial differences had any real affect, maybe before level 30, but thats about it
Of course they had a real effect, yes you could offset it via gear to some extent, but the fact remained that someone in the best gear on the most optimal class for playing the job was generally more favourable.
We all know how it can be when people won't let you do Ifrit without Sentinel or because you are an Archer, I wouldn't be so quick to assume that peoples opinions don't matter and can adversely effect the way people play.
I can see it now, 6/8 Roegadyns in Ifrit because they have much more HP and better survivability.
Now to be honest, only tarutaru and galka had it really bad, because of hp and mp differences. Mostly mp though. Elvaan wasn't optimal but it could do the job.
Honestly, I think I'd prefer an idea like this not be implemented, as far as my own preferences go. I feel the present differences in stats are appropriate.
Although I do find it funny that everyone's letting their memories of Final Fantasy XI blind them to the fact that in XIV, Mi'qote are thematically (and in terms of what stat differences already exist) slightly the better mages and Lalafell the better thief-types.
Slightly.
And therein lies the problem. At one point it doesn't matter how big the differences are, if the community has the mindset that X race can't do Y job because of stat differences then the damage is already done. By adding those kinds of race stat differences in you're essentially restricting everyones choice of classes and jobs because the community as a whole won't accept them unless they fit the norm.
Now when you have stat differences that actually are substantial and actually do differentiate the races, the problem becomes tenfold what it was before. Now you have the actual game limiting what people can and cannot do based on race. At least if it was just a mindset problem certain players could break it. If it's an actual gameplay issue then there is literally nothing you can do about it. X race just isn't good at Y class/job end of story. At that point they should just limit a races choice of classes and jobs because that's all they'll ever be allowed to do.
So no, stat differences between races are not needed. The freedom exists in the game as is and works perfectly fine. Choice of race should be merely aesthetic preference. It shouldn't force other things upon players.
Race specific gear would be nice to have at certain threshold levels
I don't mind the idea of some diference between races. I knew a few blm galkas that where better than some blm taru and also some pretty nasty taru sam
Absolutely not. People should not feel compelled by the min/max overlords to choose a specific race to match their class or otherwise be considered gimp.
As much as I would like to see half our server population not be miqo'te, I feel that race should always be a purely aesthetic choice.
I was an elvaan blk mage and I hated that I couldn't do the same damage as a hume. I love that job but was stuck being a white mage which I didn't like to much. I picked miq'ote because I liked the look and because I was afraid of the stats on the other races. I like that they didn't make that any differences in the races. I was in a party in FFXI and I was a dragoon and we had a taru tank who kept loosing hate I was tanking for half the time because she kept getting the mage killed it was an awful party and I know I'm not the best player in the world but when 3 players die 3 times in a row it was time for me to leave and I never leave a party because someone sucks. To be honest it was kinda funny every time she got hit she would fall over she couldn't take the damage.
I am for racial differences. The way the lore was made out, each race have sub-races that specialize in physical and magic, so you can still be a lala who can fight well or a Roe who can cast spells.
Absolutely, Positively, Adamantly...NO!
I never beat Maat in XI because my MP pool (and INT) as a Galka Red Mage was abysmal. Well, that and because I am lame on hard fights but even still the added difficulty was rediculous.
What I would like to see though is a special "Racial Move"...sort of a 2-hour move unique to each race perhaps usable against an aggro mob while you are still in Passive Mode. It would give you a chance to stun the enemy while you draw your weapon or run away.
I am against racial differences.
FFXIV (like FFXI) is one of those games were you tend only to make one character where you do everything, generally because it allows you to level multiple classes on one character, and because of this, people generally pick their character that aesthetically pleasing to them. Racial differences will just pigeonhole players into picking something that they will not like aesthetically, or forces them to play as a gimp player...
Even the differences between sub races isn't nice. Personally I hate how plainsfolk taru look compared to dunesfolk, i would play a dunesfolk and take whatever penalties came with it :/ Again you are forcing people to choose between wanting to look a certain way, or being gimp.
I think racial abilities would fit better than actual stat bonuses...
The Dunesfolk lalafells are supposed to be resistant to poisons in their lore....
Survival
Removes all poison effects.
5min Timer
A simple perk ability...not a game changer...
Great post on the game's lore at http://forum.square-enix.com/ffxiv/t...ASE-CONTRIBUTE
Miqo'te with cat like reflexes has increase in evasion or "evades next attack"
I'd love it but too many people are whining over the idea - never mind interesting implementations that could be done.
Lalafell
Dunesfolk
Survival
Remove most status effects from self.
Plainsfolk
Crafty
Actions consume no MP or TP for X seconds.
Roegadyn
Sea Wolf
Pillage
Three fold attack with main weapon and steals x amount of gil.
Hellsguard
Steely Resolve
Increases def for X seconds
Miqo'te
Moonseeker
Lunatic
Increase attack power for X seconds
Seekers of the Sun
Reflex
Increase evasion for X seconds
Elzen
Wildwood
Keen Predator
Increases accuracy for X seconds
Duskwight
Isolation
Vanish and lower enmity for X seconds…can not move or do any actions during duration.
The Hyur
Midlander
Cunning
Restores a % of Tp and MP
Highlander
Adrenaline
Restores 100% HP
Just some ideas.... each based off the lore
Even with those I think the community would be of the mindset that X race is best for Y job because of the racial ability. Like Highlan Hyur or Hellsguard Roegadyn would be the only acceptable Tanks because of their ability. Wildwood Elezen would be the only good Rangers, etc... e tc...
I miss the 2 hour abilities
I have to admit I find myself on the fence when it comes to this, on one hand I think there should differences (Roedagyn don't exactly strike me as having the dex and stealth of Miqote) and on the other hand I would rather not be stuck choosing one race over another just because that race is better suited for the main classes I'm going to be playing. If SE didn't charge per character that would be fine, but they do and since characters can change to any class having the differences can cause problems if your race doesn't fit class but you want to get all classes done on that character. Galka being mages on 11 was a prime example.
Mairuzu ---> I too miss the 2 hour abilities.
"I am not suggesting a race difference like FFXI. I do not want a Roedagyn to not be able to be a caster because their mp pool is abysmal. I simply want there to be a small difference in stats, around 5-10% taken from one or two stats and added to another to reflect what the race is, supposedly, evolutionarily apt towards."
While I'm alright with that idea, I was under the impression that points would be manually allotted for all classes in 1.20
I don't think having differences in races is a good idea. Elitism in this game would say your stupid for being a Elezen mage. Etc. My proposal is to have these differenced tied to the gods that you get to choose from at character creation. This way, we can be who we want, and have what bonus we want.
Even if the race-based abilities is not practical, id still like to resurrect the idea that players' size and weight can be taken into account to solve certain puzzles. :)
funny thing is tho...in the lore it doesn't seem to say lalafell are great mages. If anything they should be rouge or merchant classes.
just cause they small means they are good at magic? that they are smart?.......classic goblins are tiny lil green men that are dumber than bricks lol
Being big usually goes hand in hand with strength tho.. Lets remember "Of Mice and Men"
No matter how it would be done, there'd be a thread with someone crying about it in some fashion or another. the lore says the racial advantages, and common sense and vegas betting money says when/if they do racial bonus' they'll go by those. if they we're to go by deity, they would also have everyone up in arms, because "i'm a tank but i picked Nophica instead of Halone or Rhalgr" or what have you, then they'd probably have to allow deity changes. (which wouldn't be a bad idea, in real life people change religions all the time.) But the long and short of it is, you can't please all of the people, all of the time.
I don't know if changing stats to fit peoples classes would work for the way this game is set-up. However, I am not against it. That being said, I do wish there was more of a difference between the classes in some aspects of the game.
Here are a couple Ideas:
1. As mentioned previously, lore based abilities (maybe make them 2-hours?)
2. Deity Based Boosts (I'd actually make these Summons. Each player could Summon their Diety but ONLY during the Deity's Moon and only once during each moon. So they *could* be used to beat hardcore stuff BUT, only on a super-long timer and everyone would only be able to use their summon if it was that God's moon. So it would require super strategy/planning/recruiting etc. I don't think this would force people to select specific Deity's because eveyone would get a day/time/chance and all would be equally useful.)
3. Race specific-gear
4. Race specific storylines
5. Make food's work for everyone BUT every dish has a optimal race it favors. So if the description says "This tea is prized by the Dunesfolk for it's minty flavor" Dunesfolk Lalas who drink it would get the normal stat boost + a race boost. This would also keep the food market more varied and not just a couple items...etc.
6. Missions/quests that require specific races/teamwork between the races to accomplish the goal (mentioned in previous posts)
7. Your Birthday- you should get a boost on your character's in-game birthday. This could either be a generic boost all players get regardless of their Diety/Day/Moon choice or it could be an ability based on the Diety Moon of your Birthday/birthmonth.
Again, I'd be cool with some minor stat adjustments as well...but I can see how it wouldn't help the game. But I do miss seeing classes played by 'specialists' even though I also never thought 'Galkas can't mage'.
I thought one of the interesting things about XI was the way you had to obtain specific items to balance out racial limitations present when playing jobs the race wasn't good at. One of the things that is sort of missing in XIV is the need to stop leveling for a week to go camp a NM to get an item that you just had to have in order to make it as a taru pld, or a galka blm. It made the game more challenging. Currently leveling is just too vanilla since all you really need to do is just grind grind grind all the way to 50.
No thanks, I don't want to be gimped in a particular class just because of the race I chose >.>
@OP
I understand your point of view. However, FFXI done this horribly so my vote would be NO to this. I chose my character based solely on looks and would like to do so in the future.
EDIT: And no! I dont want to work just to compensate to my race shortcomings. I want to work hard to excel in my role not just to be on par with other by-default race.
To be honest I would like there to be some difference but not a bug one. I dont want it to be a deciding factor. My idea would be to implement race traits. what they should be ill leave to wiser minds but I still think the idea is viable.
