Something nice to look at.
Mostly a projection. I'm a loner and a rebel (inb4 Pee-Wee Herman) in real life who's all business, with a healthy dose of Frank Zappa thrown in as well. This translates to in-game as well. I don't do seasonal stuff or dance next to aetherites etc., which I find a waste of time. I just want to log in and quest/craft/run instances and help others out when I can, with giving them a chuckle a bonus. The rest is just fat.
My 'characters' are all unique in looks/personality/backstory. Though in this game instead of making multiple characters I have just the one, but when I get really bored of a certain race or look I always change their name as well. Xah is dead, long live Steven! etc. It can be a little jarring at times. So far between when I first started and now I have had 4 unique name/character combinations. SE likes taking my money for fantasia/name changes.
I always try to make a character look like myself, so when I got the game that's what I did, down to the hairstyle. So if anything, I suppose I "projected" myself into the game world in a sense
This being my 1st and only MMORPG I was able to how everyone's character was so unique and stood out so much ... then I see my character and he was so plain in comparison. I already used up my vet reward fantasia to make minor changes to my character and back then Fantasia was not in the cash shop and there were no aesthetician, so I was stuck and I wasn't willing to redo the game as a different character since I accomplished a lot already.. The release of the aesthetician helped a bit.
When Fantasia was purchasable, I changed as a Miqo'te and switch to a lore-friendly name (seeker) since their lore was interesting and since then each race I switch to have their own separate head cannon and names.
I am the exact same way. I am not going to trudge through the story all over again just to play a class I've already leveled more than likely just to look different. Unlocking all the dungeons, all the primals, all the side quests for glamour and fast travel and the aesthetician. I'm not replaying the whole game, no thanks I'll pay 10$ and just change my character's aesthetic.
Gonna say "Fantasy" here, with a touch of Special Snowflake (Note the name [Though I can use the Nickname excuse for that], and the eyes). Though I did attempt to design her around the Aurora Borealis.
As far as how I play, Well I have something of a backstory for Aurora, but parts of it changes to my playstyle whole other remain inconsistent with how I act IRL. For example, My choice of Guardian was because I wanted to craft, but after finding that a little too tedious (It took the Ixali beast tribe quests to get me back into crafting, an I haven't gotten them beyond 50 yet), I since deiced to go for a metaphorical builder of bridges take on it.
Other times, I do things because of what I had in mind for her. For example She went to the Coils and Alexander as a result of the events in Azys Lla, which left her curious of what exactly makes a primal (crystals and faith aside) and afraid of what she might be becoming.
I downloaded the game knowing full well I was maining a Marauder/Warrior(still do), and being a fan of Robert E. Howard, tried to make my avatar as Barbaric as possible, over the years glams have ranged from Golden Axe, Gauntlet, Conan, etc, so very Sword and Sorcery for me; as you can see, I don't resemble my avatar whatsoever xD

P.S- I'm the Dog if you're wondering
Well in the case of Meraii Hale, that is an alter ego I created as a teen. All Meraii Hales in every game have silver hair (or white if no silver is available), and if possible, one red eye and one green (if not possible, just green). The length/style of the hair and the height/race of the character vary depending on my mood, but I tend to lean towards short characters because Meraii has an innocence about her, plus the short races usually end up being the super smart ones. On WoW that means Meraii is a gnome, in GW2 she is an Asura, FFXIV a lalafell, on other games though, she is a human or an elf depending on the options.
For non-Meraii characters, I tend to go with what looks best/most fitting for each race and just play around until I find something I like. I'm in the process of making one of each race (still choosing a name for an elezen and haven't bothered at all with an au'ra yet)
There's not much point in making a character that looks like me.
edit: Although I supposed you could argue that Meraii is an idealised projection of myself, although obviously, I have a better figure.
I usually make characters that I can imagine being. In Warcraft I have MANY alts, but my favorite characters, and the ones I play the most, are female night elves and female blood elves. I have other race/gender combos and I do play them, but they are not, and never will be, considered my main characters.
The same goes here. This character is my main character, and I can imagine being Te'mariel. When I play, I'm her. She's sometimes sweet looking and sometimes a bit more edgy which is just about like me.
I can't really connect with other races well in FF though I've tried. The Lalafell are super adorable, but I'm just not the "adorable" type.
I wanted to try and design Bahamut as an Au Ra because I loved the thought of the dreadwyrm becoming a 'Little Bit Beastly' Dragon girl. Course, I fell so in love with the design and idea of the character that I couldn't imagine going back to my old miqote, even though I'm not a big fan of dragons.
Based off my appearance 110%.
Mine doesn't look like me at all, and half the time I gravitate towards white hair on my miqo'te and have even gone with pink or purple hair or light gray skin so, I guess my character design is pretty random. Just whatever appeals to me at the moment.
:O I wanna see, can I see, let me see. I'll link an artwork from me to make fair.http://i93.photobucket.com/albums/l4...pshlzcdxcf.jpg
Mine was completely random. I decided long before 1.0 I was gonna be a cat and I even made one in beta; but just for the lulz I decided to try another race and almost six years later here we are, haha.
I like short girls, about it.
Pretty much this. I just spent a few hours making a character I liked, I like green eyes so went with green. I was gonna go for purple hair as it's my favorite colour but I decided I wanted a more natural looking colour so went with red/brown. Added blonde highlights as my own hair in real life is highlighted blonde. My character started out pale skinned. She was like this in Beta (left), then changed to the right at launch when they allowed us to recustomise:

I changed the heterochromia because it was really common, and noticed as the quote above, whitewashed kitties everywhere. So I tanned up due to my special snowflake syndrome.
The red tattoo? I dunno. I thought it was cute, chose red as it went well with the skin tone and it suited the white/red WHM robes. The face I chose was just because I liked the stripe markings. Eyes etc are just what is attractive to me I guess. Character doesn't look like me at all except the fact I have green eyes (though not as nuclear green lol) and blonde highlights.
My character is really based off of weiss from rwby and how I would actually see myself if I was living in a fantasy world.
In every game I create an "avatar" of myself named Vayanne, whose looks are an idealized version of mine. I usually choose an elven race if available - that goes back to my first WoW character, hence the Night-elven sound of the name. I spent quite a few minutes pondering whether "Vayanne" was a suitable name for an Elezen or not, in fact I am still unsure about it. I also tend to create at least one more character, preferably a male if I can get a look that I like. I really want to play a male character in FFXIV but I don't have the heart to change my "main" and sadly the game isn't much alt-friendly, so...
random , i was a taru in FFXI
http://vignette2.wikia.nocookie.net/...ekSet-Male.png
but got tired of not enjoying weapons or armor so i started to avoid small races :P , now i usually play the race that i like the most ( for example : in wow tauren male for horde and human female for alliance, gw2 human male but my thief is Asura) ,battle animations are the more important thing ,if i like how it looks but dont like battle animations meh....
in FFXIV every1 has the same animations ...after being hyur for years wanted to change and Au Ra now :P , always white/grey hair if i can...for unknow reasons
I usually play female characters for vanity reasons. I'm a guy but one thing that I'm quite jealous of is female fashion. There is so many more outfit ideas and I'm stuck with pants and tshirts and thats it. So I play female characters for vanity sake. It's not really a desire to be it but eh, it's a game.
One thing that has always been a staple for me with games - I love my pigtails!
(Pictures hidden to avoid spam!)
Aside from my pigtail obsession, a lot of the time they will end up with blue eyes (which I have), be on the taller side for their particular races (which I am), and have a nice tan going on (which I want! ;; ). Outside of that, I just go for cute :)
She's a projection and a fantasy. I certainly wish I looked like her, and a lot of her appearance is influenced by Daenerys Targaryen's novel description from the show A Game of Thrones. Particularly the silver hair and purple eyes. Though my character's natural hair color is platinum blonde. I already knew how I wanted my character to look before even starting the game. From there it was all about playing with the options to get her as close as possible to that.
Though sometimes I think my character is more real than I am.
When I started FFXI, I intended to play a Thief or Ranger, so I went with Mithra for the Dexterity/Agility bonuses, and I settled on the white-haired Face 6A (just like, I would soon learn, almost everyone else).
Moving forward to FFXIV, I just did my best to recreate my FFXI character (to the point that I obsessed over the highlights for my white hair to make it more resemble the dark lines in the corresponding hairstyle in FFXI). The FFXIV Alahra is much paler (since we didn't get to choose skintone in FFXI and I thought it was more appropriate for a Keeper of the Moon), and her markings don't quite line up to the FFXI ones (since none of the faces have an exact match).
I've been told she looks a bit like me when I wear glasses in-game, but I don't see it myself.
I made myself a Lalafell because they're adorable and I like cute things and I like small things. Then I tweaked his face and hair to whatever I could find that would produce the most serene, adorable face I could. Then I went full tank, because watching a person shrug off hits from swords twice as wide as their entire body is funny.
I don't know if I succeeded, but he's a cool little dude in my eyes. I also like cloth classes a bit more than heavy armor classes, because again wearing jammies to a dungeon is adorable when you're the size and shape of a penguin.

xD Teehee~ Thankoo. <3
I made my seawolf roegadyn something between how I am and how I wish I'd be. She has green eyes like me, but obviously much more brighter coloured, she usually has pink/purple hair and I tend to keep my hair pink irl. She has the palest skin colour available, because I love white skin and have weakness to (pastel-)gothic aesthetics. She's the shortest roegadyn available as I'm slightly on the short side irl. At first I wore pretty much anything on her, not shying away from bikinis or other revealing clothing, but these days I dress her pretty much how I'd dress myself; no unnecessary skin shown (besides maybe a little bit of thigh, 'cause I have a weakness for my roe's legs, pfufu).
As for my male elezen... I just made what I found cute; freckles, puppy eyes and slender long ears. It's no secret that I crush hard on Ser Zephirin, so I gave Étoileaux the same hairstyle as him. It's pretty much the only hairstyle I really like on male elezen. As for his dark grey skin colour... I don't know. I guess I just wanted to make him look a bit more unique. Seen so many duskwight elezens that use lighter shades of grey skin, so I guess I wanted to go the opposite way. :) Étoileaux doesn't have as many glamours as Haprilona, being alt and all, but he generally wears black or other dark colours like dark blue or dark red. I guess I let my closet goth come forth in him. x')
I've got a blue Au Ra gal. She looks sort of like a mermaid.
I first started FFXIV as a female Roe, because I liked the taller, more adult look as opposed to the the teenage, skiny other females... I never play human race in games, since I can design a fantasy character :)
I tried to go for an "Avatar" style character, so seawolf with blue-grey skin, dark blue hair and golden eyes.
With Heavensward release I changed to Au'ra cause I liked the dragony themed look, but kept the same color scheme from my Roe.
In general I tend to create sort of an "enhanced myself", with general size and face shape close to myself.
My characters are based off different reasons, none are a reflection of the real me other than my tastes/appreciations. My characters vary a lot but I started this one as a male cat boy just because I wanted to play one in XI but they didn't exist. Then on a whim to surprise my FC one day, I changed to Fem Roe and it was absolutely a perfect match for me in this game!
I change hairstyles and colors and they all look FABULOUS! Yes I'm gushing about my character but my goodness. The combination of physical aesthetic, the way the armor and gear fits like it was designed for her spectacular frame. And the emotes/animations. Amazing!
I appreciate all the variety of races but I have to say, I have never felt such an affinity for a race in any MMO before.
I got the fake mustache and now I think I'm just some weird Victorian Catperson. Tho he is a reflection of myself in a weird mindset kinda way.
