No - its utterly irrelevant because lore changes game per game. 11 had it - so 14 could have it too. 9 quasi had it so it could be in 14 too. If none of them had it it could still be in 14. There is no imperative formula either way.

Agreed, it's pretty ridiculous. It also kind of clues you in on how much FF history they know. Just because XI did it doesn't mean every other FF game must. Dragoons are generally distinguished by the Jump ability and wielding spears of some sort, not by having a wyvern pet.

Lore changes but the distinguishing features of certain classes stay mostly similar. As stated above Dragoons are characterized by spears and the Jump ability. True they could have wyvern pets but it does not distinguish one as a Dragoon. FFTA Dragoons had AoE cone breath abilities but that doesn't make it a distinguishing characteristic of Dragoon.

And people are asking for the "distinguishing features" to be dismissed because they want a wyvern? Dragoon are characterized by spears and jump ability? I'm pretty sure we had those in 11 as well. Seems it meets your criteria there. Your arguments against are meaningless. Fact of the matter is someone could just as easily say wyvern are a part of the overall lore now because 11 had them.

Like it or not they are part of the over all lore so could either fit into the game or not. Stating however, there is no place for them because other games didn't have them is a misnomer. 1 did - 1 in the same venue we are playing now. An MMO.

well as of right now, it is imposible, they havent implemented a way of dealing with pets

but in the end, traditionaly, dragoons have NOT had wyverns as pets, they are dragon slayers of sorts instead(hence the name dragon knight which was turned into dragoon)

saying that they arent real dragoons(as per the OP) without a wyvern is just down right inacurate

i agree with you that the dragoon needs a lance and jump to be a dragoon, not a wyvern. but just to point out a little FF history the most famous dragoon. (in my opinion) kain highwind didn't have a lance he had swords (if he had lances he wasn't restricted to them) but every dragoon after him had a lance and jump that is what defines dragoons. anyway to them that want the wyvern, stop being greedy i seen the pic's your getting some wicked armour :P

Misnomer. Its not even close to impossible from the fact they're adding pet classes and said they're doing re-writes to the story to help recreate the jumbled world. If enough people asked for it they certainly could fit in wyvern.

Here's the thing: Lore wise, Dragoons have always had ties to Dragons in some way -- FFXI manifestated that tie and gave us a Wyvern pet because it's the wyvern we saved. They're not called Dragon Knights simply because it sounded cool, they're called Dragon Knights because they're linked to Dragons in some way. Some FFs show this better than others.

Please, please, please for the love of all things holy graduate from your infatuation with FFXI. I agree that dragoons need some relationship with dragons, and I'm sure the writers in this game will give them that. Dragons already have an important role in the lore in this game, so it's not like the potential isn't there.

What does this have to do with anything? It's a reference point because it's Square Enix's other ONLINE FINAL FANTASY GAME -- it's not hard understand. Unless you mean to tell me WoW or Rift has a better Dragoon implementation in their MMO than Square did in their last MMO? Not to mention, if you've read a lot of the recent interviews, Yoshida himself even references "kind of like FFXI" or "Like seen in FFXI" because it's their last MMO. they have lore with dragoons and dragons in FF14. dragoons come from ishgard. ishgard don't seem to like dragons much. it seems to me dragoons will be dragon hunters in FF14 lore

no thanks on that wimpy ass looking wyvern, that they would probably nerf us to use it. I wouldnt mind some kind of attack that involves a wyvern swooping in from the sky but I dont want that thing following me around. Lancer is going to be a much more darker looking character in XIV, a cute baby wyvern makes no sense. And like others said almost every FF title has Dragoon like class, but only FFXI had the pet.

To clear something up from what I have been reading...
It has been stated in several interviews that the pet system is not possible to implement with the way FFXIV is NOW, but they are possible and will be made available in FFXIV 2.0.

That being said...
Jobs armor and abilities are going to be Quest driven, meaning that at some point after its implementation there will be a possibility that a quest gets added for Dragoon to aquire a pet once the pet system is implemented.

I would like to see Dragoon as a sort of party buffer class, able to grant things like Scaleskin (Similar to Stoneskin), Bar- spells, ACC+, ATK+, CRIT+, MAG RESIS+, EVA+, etc.

Jump abilities I feel are a must.

I think there is a 25% chance they will get pets at this point.

Wyvern would be the best first pet class to add because its a lot easier to add, since all it would do really is a few breath attacks maybe. Unlike summoner/beastmaster which would need all new classes/tons of abilities (every summon has so many) on top of the animations for all the summons/primal not added.

So with this i still see a chance that we will get our first pet class, this would certainly make a large group happy.

FFXI is the only FF game with dragoons that have pets. I was fine in IV, V, VII, IX, X, and XII without them.

Freya didn't have a dragon pet, period. An embodied dragon never once came out. It is only the name of her attacks. Summoning the essence of a dragon does not equate to having a dragon pet. Do I have a cat pet if I summon my essence of a cat? FFXI was the only time FF had dragoon with a literal pet. Stop trying to bring poor Freya into this argument.

I really loved wyverns as pets in XI and would love to see them again in XIV... but ONLY if the lore supported it somehow.
I have a feeling we'll get wyverns eventually.. but not for a long time.. XD I can just see SE surprising us with it one day.
I won't be disappointed if they don't though.

Dragoons seems to be originate in Ishgardians, and they do not like dragonkin, they hate dragons, wyvern and the such. Their jobs seems to get rid of dragonkins and the like.

Yeah they were like the spirits of the dragons she'd killed manifesting into magic is how i always saw it, the most powerful one of all dealt more damage the more dragons you kill. I have to say as Dragoon i want to be more than just a melee dd with elemental breaths. I want some magic that i actually want to consider for when i'm gearing i'll be dissapointed if Dragoon goes solely physical dd like any other dd job.

The only thing I want from Dragoon is the ability to jump off the screen and then come back down for an attack like in the old days :D

I'd love to have my little blue Wyvern back!!! I won't get upset if I don't get one, but it sure would be nice.

the pet wyvern in ffxi is weak, and it is still weak even till this day. Healing breath is probably the only useful skill they have.

I much prefer Dragoons abilities like Kain Highwind. Like the Kain Highwind in Dissidia 012, keep it classy and real

Not everything has to function like it did in XI.

Quite frankly, for as much as I played DRG in FFXI, I only played it because of one thing: the dragon pet; I do NOT want a dragon-esque pet tied to a class wielding a polearm, rather no dragon pet be allowed at all than that again.

I'd hate it if that annoying, ugly, little Wyvern from ffxi made a guest appearance in FFXIV. At least give people a dragon like the one from the opening cinematic that you can fly and ride on and that spews fire at anyone that tries to take it away from you.

While I'd prefer that dragoons not have a pet, I'm not nearly as adamant as some here about it. We already have at least two pet classes, and for met that's more than enough since I've always found having an army of pets on my screen to be distracting in MMORPGs. As others have said, Jump + Spears have been the defining feature of dragoons throughout the series.

As said before Dragoon's in other Final Fantasies didn't have pets and to be honest I though the Dragoons pet in 11 was kind of crap.

Yoshi please leave Lancer/Dragoon a pure DD class thank you, we don't want no frilly dragons.

K I for one would looooooove a wyvern pet. Just let us customize them this time!!

I loved my blue dragon in FFXI. I would love to have one now. I would also like it to be a little more mean looking with a nice fire attack. It would be great if it was like you were in battle riding it and it flew at people rather then jump. You would have to have a lancer to reach people to hit them. It would be like you were a Calvary rider except instead of a horse you have a dragon.

I would love for my faithful, taru-eating companion Kagero to rejoin my side in the lands of Eorzea. Only he better not be cute, better not be blue and better not have w beaver tail.

A new spin on the FFXI style dragoon with some throwbacks to the other dragoons of the past all with a FFXIV spin would be ideal.

To those of you who couldn't care less about a pet dragon and only want Dragoon to be a better lancer... I have this to say to you: Why are you sooooo boring?
