I've probably come across many, but not bothered to take note. As far as copying names from pre-existing media, I don't for my mains or any character I play seriously, but I may either do it on alts to see if I can cosplay them as such, or just mess around with character creator. I managed to make Rose Quartz from Steven Universe, and Milia Fallyna from Macross (which worked better on GW2) on the character creator, and I have an alt named Id from Xenogears for shits and giggles. With Id, I want to see if I can dress up appropriately, and on a related note, I have seen an Elhaym Van'houten running around.
I always get annoyed by anyone that names their character after popular media of any kind. Come up with your own names!
Nope, but my first name Sango always gets 'Inuyasha?' remarks. I actually got it from the African god of thunder, but I guess that's a lil more obscure than Inuyasha lol.
I've got no problem with anime names, but I prefer it when people are being clever or funny with those names and actually bother to spell them correctly (unless that conflicts with being clever/funny). My character's name is technically also an anime/videogame name ("Yadon" is the Japanese name for Slowpoke, the Pokemon, from which I take my nickname), but it adheres to in-universe naming conventions for female Dunesfolk.
Names like XxCloudsbuttplugxX, BiSepiroth, or TgirlTifa are common on Balmung.
I once had a DF where each one (except me) was named "Sasuke Uchiha" but each had different spelling variation on the name and were in different servers, so it was random/not planned with friends
Mine's a very obscure reference to another game series (to the point where it could qualify as a spoiler, but it'd also require knowing about localization differences too).
Although I also brought it over from a different MMO, and my reasons for naming my character exactly the same in FF14 is because I happen to be an official volunteer staff member for that other MMO, and it'd be very nasty if someone tried to fool my friends in this game that also came over from that MMO by impersonating me on this side. The original reason for naming him as such over in that game was that he was meant to be a cosplay character, even using the class with mechanics that best fit the combat style in the original game series.
I'm the great Mad Cientist Hououin Kyouma!
No one can beat that
Well my server have so many Japanese name because... You can figure it.
There's a Killua Zoldyck on my server which I think it's pretty cool, but i'm not fond of seeing lots of Kiritos or Asunas around. SAO is seriously overhyped and not even that good
Still, they're all better than things like 'Master Baitor' 'Insertyour Namehere' or whatever funny names people do. In my opinion a name should actually be a name - pretentious anime character or otherwise - not some kind of pun or phrase or title ('Princess', 'Sir' etc should not be used as a first name. ever.).
Oh man, that reminds me of my first experience as a healer in 8 person content when Myth tomes were the thing. I DFed Titan HM and got another WHM named Kirito as my healing partner. The guy had no idea what they were doing and was knocked out of the arena by the beginning of phase 2. I had to solo heal the rest of the fight with my newbie Darklight gear and ilv 55 staff that my FC mate made for me (that talking plant thing), realizing just how much more AoE heals 8 person content needs compared to doing the 4 person dungeons I was used to. As luck would have it, the cane dropped and Kirito outrolled me on it. I don't trust anyone with the name Kirito.
Also, remember the huge influx of horribly mispelled A Song of Ice and Fire/Game of Thrones names that were rampant when ARR first released? I really don't see that anymore.
As another person on a Japanese server I'm used to seeing Japanese names, and while a few are clearly anime-based the majority are just normal everyday names the player thought sounded cool. Actually, Lalafell named after edible treats are probably the most common issue here :D
Please don't be too harsh on all of the Kiritos, though. My friend is a Kiri and he's used that name for many years; it would be a shame to see him suddenly viewed as a SAO clone when it's actually from a different language in this case.
Anime names are okay. There are so many animes and mangas out there that it's easy to accidentally create a name which matches a known cartoon character.
It's the 'joke' names which turn me off. Any name which is racist or inappropriately sexual gets immediately reported.
As far as Kacho's name, it may seem a joke but it's not. Not knowing Plainsfolk Lalafell naming conventions, I relied on the random name generator. It was the first name the popped up and I loved it! A perfect name for the neighborhood nice guy of a lalafell I wanted to roleplay and very memorable too.
Not too happy with all the anime names, tbh °-°
Especially since the introduction of Raen lore gave people an excuse to freely throw any anime character name at their lizard lady/man, even though it was specifially stated that their names are based on olden-times Japanese names, not modern pop culture.
*sigh*
Not like I'm gonna bother anyone about it. But some of these mash-ups just make me cringe a bit ._. (looking at you, Mr. Akainu Zoldyck!:()
I know there are probably a few unfortunate souls who picked a lore-fitting name completely unrelated who get thrown in with the fanboy crowd, but usually it's easy to notice :p
(And lore-fitting names CAN be a bother..my alt is named Yayani Yani and I find her name very adorable, but once I wanted to race-change to Elezen....and I went back within a few hours, because being an Elezen lady with such an obvious lala name was not pleasant xD)
I'm not judging someone because his character is named Sakura, but most of the time, the origin of the name is pretty clear, either because of the name combinations (yes, you, dear 49 Ms. "Sakura Uchiha"s! ;)) or the fact that some things aren't ACTUAL names byond some famous anime character or are read in a way no normal human would read the name except for this ONE character from anime X or Y
It's totally okay to not have a lore-fitting name and/or to get a bit of inspiration from that show/game/etc. you love so much! But at least make it somewhat fit the fantasy world you are in instead of becoming the umpteenth Kirito/Sasuke/Alucard...or Sephiroth/Rinoa/Zelda for that matter
My name is from an anime and you have no clue how many people keep asking me if my name is from final fantasy! My name is Magnificent Steiner from MONSTER! >.<
I'm not really a fan of it, but I don't mind if other people take their character names from other media. Every once in a while, I'll see someone with a name from something I love (anime or not) and it'll bring a smile to my face, but most of the time I don't really pay a whole lot of attention.
There's at least 3 people on my server named "Kenshin Himura" (with various spellings) and at least 1 retainer.
I'm one of those people who eye roll a little when they notice it. I'm okay with funny names and such but I can't help but wonder why when I see "Daenerys Targaryen" - or any butchered alternative - roaming about. Albeit, what bothers me most are NPCs, especially if it's one I actually like and that person is treating it as though they are their own OC.
I like Y'shtola. You are not Y'shtola.
My FC is actually full of people who do this. A lot of people in my FC just created alts and started naming them after the Scions and other important characters.
We have a:
Haurchefant Senpai
Ser Aymeric
Scion Y'shtola
Antecedent Minfilia
Inspector Hildibrand
I think it's great.
My main's name I got it from slavic mythology and then after I saw various characters with that name I remembered ................................ that that name was used in Trinity blood. My Alt has an Xaela lore name but she isn't an au ra anymore <o<;
Tho on my server there is Princess Serenity, I saw also Prince Enymion; as somewhere before there are tons of Kiritos....
Edit: forgot in DF I saw Kaede Rukawa, Derek Hale, Nick Fury.....
My main (Millerna Astor) has a name from an anime (I did change 1 letter in her last name, just because I thought it sounded better than the original), although apparently the anime is too old for a lot of players to have seen it, so not that many actually know about it ;)
My alt's name (Jennet Mucklehoney) is a name I've used since Dark Age of Camelot many years ago. It's a real life first name and a last name I took from 1 of my guild members in DAoC.
Nothing makes me cringe more than characters named after pop culture figures. Or any figure for that matter. If I got a penny for every Stark, Highwind or Naruto I've seen I'd be rich.
On the other hand, my last name came from this cutie:

OH WELL
I occasionally get asked if my name is supposed to be a spin on Kakashi from Naruto, which I kindly decline. I've been using Akashi since I was 10ish, since my grandma showed me a bridge from Tokyo with the same name. Since then I used it for my female characters in PSO, FFXI, my tag for Smash tournaments, and now for 14 as well. It's a bit awkward that my character's gender is male, and Akashi is a girl's name, but eh, I still find it endearing. On the lore side of things, his last name is Mousai (goddess of fortune/music) and he's a Bard. :s
I'm guilty of doing the same thing on rare occasions but I do have a full name I always use in other games. My current name, I'm surprised many on my server, don't know where it's from. If I do use an anime name, it will always be from a very minor character or a highly unknown character because I hate having the same name as everyone else.
Ooooh I remember seeing a Yugi Muto running around, that was kind of cute.
I'm not a huge fan of blatant references so I don't use them myself but I did once have an awkward experience with some anime nerd. I was grinding fates in N.Than (this was around ARR launch) and this guy basically gives me this angry rant because I had apparently misspelled his favorite cartoon character's name or some such and that I should "respect the anime". I felt a little embarrassed for the guy especially after I pointed out that Arkwright is a random hyuran surname and that I just happened to think Astrid was a pretty name.
I hate this.
But I mean, it's allowed so I'm like not going to say anything. I'll probably just roll my eyes and judge you and you'll never know. :3
In all seriousness, if I'm creating a character for me, my rule of thumb is that if the name is taken the way it was written by the original source, I should probably avoid it. For example: If "Ichigo Kurasaki" was taken, I should probably refrain from naming my character some variant like "Ichigo xHOLLOW" or something. It's a pretty good indication that that character is a popular one that is beat to death in character creation.
Also, lore names = win. My personal opinion, obviously.
This thread is so funny to me XD.
Do people really care this much about what other people wanted to name their characters? I don't even pay too much attention to them anyways, unless they're hilarious. I would rather see anime names then one I came across last night in a dungeon with something along the lines of burp n fart -___-
Since I wanted to be a bard, I named mine after Tauriel from The Hobbit (cause she's awesome), and then Kyudo because its the japanese martial art of archery :D
I, honestly, couldn't care less what people want to name their characters. Sure, it's not original, but far be it from me to worry over their fun. It only becomes an issue on Balmung if they try to roleplay as those characters. That is when I silently judge them. :D
In my experience I've found all the UchihaMadara666x420 to be solid players who knew their jobs well.
I guess I just focus on my own stuff most of the time :P No one really gets my attention unless they are my actual friends. Also most of my close friends got either all or parts of the their names from characters. Doesn't bother me, we all enjoy anime, so it just makes it more fun.
..and you never once thought that combining an obviously Tolkien-Elvish name with Japanese would sound...weird?
The same way it would be weird to name a child born to an US-family with German origins "Kyoko Mueller" or something like that?
Don't misunderstand, of course you are free to name your character whatever you want and I'm sure lots of people have all kinds of weird thoughts about my name as well (gave up counting just how many times I got asked if it's some variation of "meow" - it's not ). I just tried to explain why stuff like that bothers me :x
And the thoughts continue: "Couldn't she at least make an Elezen if she wants to call herself Tauriel? Why go with an Elvish name for a catgirl?" and so on.
Of course, I could just turn names off and only show initials if it bothered me that much. But it doesn't bother me much.
It's more like a minor annoyance, just like seeing characters which I consider ugly, or characters in slutty outfits with slutty make-up on.
It would be a lot worse to not know someone's names when I talk to them for the first time. And I wouldn't see funny or cute names either. But that doesn't stop me from thinking "Oh god, this again" when I befriend the next Benjamin Uzumaki.
