And the reward for finishing the Beast Tribe quests was a scene where you stalk a male who walks around his house in only his panties.
I'm sure some people were quite appreciative of that scene and it made all the grinding worth it. Maybe.

I might point out that if the Grand Companies did treat us as employees we wouldn't get a fraction of the freedom we do get. Thing about a regular salary is all the conditions that come with it. Im just happy I can use them to get rid of useless junk and feed my coke addiction (for building Airships of course) :P
Indeed, that's an oft-forgotten point: We aren't actually part of the regular standing forces of the Grand Companies. Rather, adventurers and free companies are irregular units, and they're nominally enlisted by the Grand Companies to serve as an auxiliary or reserve force.
If I recall correctly, the city-states used to have larger standing armies, comprising not just enlisted/commissioned units, but also large numbers of mercenaries. But after the end of the Autumn War with Ala Mhigo, there was no further need for large standing armies. Many soldiers lost their jobs, and for a while, they were a nuisance until the Adventurers' Guild was set up to provide some form of employment.
I think this was explained in Ver1.0 lore. More experienced lore hounds may wish to correct or corroborate my information.
I think the duty finder can be considered echo induced PTSD and PF can be explained by a collective Echo-Ception of a group of adventurers.
I've RPed a little as being able to willingly control my Echo abilities to relive my greatest battles. But due to overuse I forget who was actually there if anyone.
