Yoshi-P Interview Translation Project (4Gamer, GAME Watch)

And the 4Gamer Interview translation is done.

I was going to do the GAME Watch translation next, but as I had noticed Reinheart starting working on translations for the other two interviews I will post the complete translation of the 4Gamer interview in the OP and provide links to Reinheart's translation in my second post instead.

Postscript: Oh, and pease be aware that this is by no means a complete, 100% accurate translation. I had written out all of this in (mostly) one sitting and thus had not gone back over the script that much to do extensive edits, so there's bound to be errors, typos and mistakes all over the translation. I would go fix them, but my motivation is completely drained after finishing this behemoth piece of work (aka: I'm lazy. =P). I hope I have everyone's understanding over this matter.

Stanislaw, thank you so much. I was a wee bit unsure if I could afford to do a pay for right now but was 90% sure I would find a way; no question now I'm staying!

I believed in the Devs and Yoshi anyway but this is just amazing. Personally, if they had of revamped the letter they sent out to mention this dual undertaking as these interviews did, I would bet there would be less QQing on the forums.

These interviews strengthen my faith in Square-Enix and the future of FFXIV and most importantly that I don't have to worry about paying fees over the next year as they will be a good investment because I will be having a lot of fun with the game as I currently am.

Flash is absolutely unsecure and it would a folly to use it for add-ons. Over the course of this year, there have been several serious vulnerabilities (including 0-day exploits) in Flash, I seriously hope they reconsider this idea.

XML isn't anymore secure. There's also a verification process when you submit flash based material to certain media -- In terms of games clearly they're going to have checks for when you try to utilize addons, so it's not like someone can write a flash exploit, then upload it to FFXIV servers lol, people would have to download it and obviously you wouldn't download something from 8829.notgoingtohackyou.com, but you would from a site named ffxivpro.com or yellow grimlin, i.e legit sites that are officially recognized by Square.

Flash is a binary blob. Hence it's more prone to security attacks. A 0-day exploit doesn't need to be "coded" inside a fake app. I'm just saying using Flash may pave the way to a XI-style hack season.

As it stands, it would be as broken as the CA system for web services, but I digress. I would rather welcome add-ons with sandboxed scripting (such as JS) or just some kind of programming interface exposed by the program (the advantage is that being SE in control of that, it would prevent "uncompetitive" add-ons).

I have to admit, this one made me laugh and grin at the same time. So we will get to time travel too i assume? :p

Now, that being said i have some critiques.

First off, about the part were yoshi said they were going to eliminate "the climb to the top of the mountain". This I greatly have an issue with. Allow me to explain why with an example:

When beta first rolled around, all of us in it were running around and exploring for the first time. Sure.. we had a map.. but that's besides the point. I knew where uldah was, and i was running for it, but still couldnt see it because it was around the bend, then i turned that bend... and what i saw mad me finger slip off the forward key and gape in awe for a solid 5 mins (maybe more). I took the time to turn the camera angle to see every angle of the shiny domed city which was Ul'dah.

And yes.. that dome was shining... there were no zone walls to block my view.. nor hinder my immersion with "now loading"... i could actually walk there and it felt as if i was actually doing that.. not just.. zoning in. Ever since that day I always enjoy the scenery no matter how many times ive ran a path (or traveled via chocobo). Because a lot of it is, in short, beautiful. Sure you had your repetitive mazes "ala kazham" like grid... but there were places in the game i didnt mind traveling to, or even explore, due to not having load screens and having unique landscapes.

That being said im a bit insulted as to think yoshi wouldn't think that some of us dont mind the journey. Or stop along that "climb to the mountain" and take screenshots to make wallpapers. Though, It insults me even more to insinuate you all, a multi million dollar corporation, do not have the "technology" to make a path to the top of that mountain look "natural" when you did so just fine in lots of places in XI. Please... don't kill the seemlessness. Just kill the repetition. Don't cut corners.

Now to my next issue. While its "really awesome" that you plan on having "housing" for the free companies... Im assuming from what ive read (since you never said "no" to zoned housing) is that there "will be" zoned instances that only your free company can see. If that is the case, what is the point of having us able to customize what the outside looks like as well as the insides if no one else can see said free company's glory or creativity in how they built their housing?

Other than those two points everything else in the interview is golden. And your right on the last part. Some of us are thinking.. "how can they do all of this.." But i digress.

Best of luck, forgive me for being a bit "reserved" as opposed to the others. I think I have every right to be.

I don't think he meant he was entirely eliminating the climb, but separating it between the field zone and the mountain itself. You will have to load into that path that's starting you mid-way up, but it also gives them more "room" (in memory) to enhance that climb.

That aside, amazing work Stanislaw. I really enjoy your translations, especially in how you arrange it in natural English. It makes for a very convincing read.

I had faith in Yoshida when he first started, though I couldn't bear the game during that period, but now I'm back and I'm quite impressed by the man's forethought, tact and execution. He knew what he had to do - both in the game and out of it - to get FFXIV back on its feet. He's got me hyped for the future!
