Ah ok thx for the clarification.

I wouldn't take that, way too cheap on their part!...
Please do a good job with the character models Square Enix, if adjusting the height if required then do so, it would be worse seeing floating people around!...
I honestly dont think floating around, at a height equal to the width of the sole of the imposed sandal, would be at all noticeable. I mean, we already float above many surfaces anyway if you take the time to look (very easy with stairs), and a lot of running is sliding on the ground. :p
Were people not wearing shoes in the swimming preview?
What if... we just made you shorter by the amount the heel of sandals made? Lower your booty into the ground a tad, maybe just a very slight float to keep your toes from sinking into the cobblestone too much - sort of a comprise from full float and not.
Of course the slider bar height you picked at creation wouldn't be the height anymore if that's how they calculated things but when you don't wear shoes in real life you also shrink.. so.. its not that magical to expect you'd be smaller xD
Perhaps combining that with a naked foot model working as a "shoe" to probably define the bottom of the foot we don't have defined since they've never needed to show it before.
This was a theory someone suggested when speculating about possible reasons, and people have been repeating it ever since as though it were actually true. But the really wide variety of different heel heights already in the game clearly prove that it's not. SE is already adjusting for different shoes with different heel heights. This would simply be one more, with a height of 0.
(I'm pretty sure they take the shortcut of shortening/lengthening your calves to make up the difference rather than changing your overall height as would happen in real life, but that would work here, too. So what if our calves end up an eighth of an inch longer when barefoot than they are with flats, a half inch longer than with the default sandals, and a couple inches longer than they do with heeled shoes? All the rest of that variation is already there.)
So I used to think the "no bare feet" thing was because the character models were incapable of displaying flat feet (so a barefoot character would be walking around on the balls of their feet for some reason), but no.. there are several pieces of foot equipment that flatten out your feet. So it's really just a matter of taking that standing pose and lowering the character's z-position by a few pixels to put them on the floor. The sound effects for bare feet walking on things is definitely a wrinkle since it'd be strange to have a barefoot character clacking around on stone or something like that when none of the character races have hooves.
Still I think it'd be a worthwhile thing for them to work on, especially with Stormblood's emphasis on underwater activities. Wearing sandals while doing that is weird.
No need for floating, there's ideas aplenty to make it work. In the numerous threads about this subject there's been a plethora of solutions to this illusional issue of heel and character height being "reason" enough for this not to happen.
The real kicker is a bunch of pervy people have already done this, using... methods; it's obviously a quickly done job, ehich makes the fact we can't all have it as an option even more of a shame - especially when a dev team can make it look better than a rando guy's work... if only they did it.
Anyway -- +1 to freeing us of the grafted on skin-sandals.
I suggested this a while back and it got shot down hard by most people. Glad to see people are more open minded to it now.
I don't really... see the appeal of having barefoot characters. ^^; Is it one of those foot fetish type things? I dunno, I'd rather see bigger and more natural looking hips come first.
It's all aesthetics. I've never noticed anything wrong with the hips? is this one of those hip-fetish type things?
Facetiousness aside, I think more people would appreciate the option of being able to go barefoot, and not have to wear stupid sandals while swimming, than would notice a different hip shape, that different outfits change the outline of anyway.
I support this ^^ Would love to be barefoot for swimming at least ^_^
Gau in FFVI ran around barefoot all the time, and he was a "beast" on the veldt (har har)!
Wait... Gau was also basically a Blue Mage... Maybe they're reserving bare feet for Blue Mage AF...
BLUE MAGE CONFIRMED!
*foams at mouth*
It's an aesthetic appeal. Many people find it strange seeing their character wear sandals in situations you'd normally be barefoot. In fact, it's incredibly awkward to swim with them on. As for the character model, I've long thought feet need to redone entirely. They don't exactly look proper. If it meant some occasional floating, I doubt many would care. That all said, I doubt they bother.
I understand wanting bare feet for the sake of just wanting it and it's benign enough that you don't need much more reason than that, but the "muh immersion and realism" has always been a weak argument for this sort of thing.
It's weird how many people are against this solely because it could potentially benefit someone with a fetish.
We're getting swimming in the next expansion, and we can't even take off our shoes for that. It's kind of ridiculous. And there are numerous RP and glamour reasons as well. And it's not like the dev team can't make it possible, they developed shoes that give you horse legs, i'm sure they're capable of designing a foot.
So since the EU fan fest started anyone heard anything about SE doing anything about this since swimming is coming out?
barefoot could be that of a glamour item someday. However, I think before they either make an item or allow us to be barefoot, they need to edit the older character foot/toe graphics a little.
The mitten look is kind of destroyed w/o the sandals atm.
The Au'Ra were upgraded on design to have less issues such as that.
This could be a lot of work, or they could just do the glamour item and we would probably not like it much (imo) <3
