I'd add on Precision Hookset costing more than Powerful Hookset, but yeah I'm mostly fine with fishing outside of some qol stuff.

i don't have any real numbers but i am pretty shure if you mooch a fish the HQ chance is increased. feels like 50% HQ and back then when i was farming silver sharks (wich you can only catch with mooch) it was always very close to 50/50 NQ/HQ fish i have caught. and i caught hundreds :x
I don't have any data as I don't take notes as I fish (I should ! D: ), but the feeing is about 50% on the mooched fish yeah. What's annoying is the 15% on the first one when you have to get a second one behind, which may or may not be exclusive, and then may or may not be exclusive of your target. Especially annoying with fishes bitting at their own mooch, ou biting at every step of the mooch chain.
The rng for big fish is part of the fun for me. I find it really exciting to check the weathers in each area in hopes of an opportunity opening up, then travelling to the area and going through fish after fish until suddenly the rod goes still and the once regular intervals of catching seem to stall for a moment. Then, all at once, a huge tug comes in as your anticipation is high, and suddenly all of the patience has paid off.
Even if you fail (and trust me I have like 8 g.takitaros and not one namitaro yet), the excitment of wanting to catch the fish and overcome the challenge is enough for me at least.
And on fish not being worth much, I feel like there are plenty of money fish already. Pipira Pira, Hammerheads, Silver sharks, Sawfish, Ninja Betta. Take your pick and cast your line.
I feel the system is fine for now.
I agree with the OP except for the "make fish bite faster".
I think 5-10 seconds is okay. It enables you to actually watch something on a second monitor.
The RNG is ridiculous though. Esp that fish constantly escapes when you use patience, whether I use a hookset or not doesn't seem to make any difference at all lol.
I would love if the fishing log would indicate which bait to use once you have caught the fish. Then I wouldn't need to keep the Fishing Log on Gamerescape open all the time when I'm working on leves, leveling, or fishing quests.
And having spent 3 hours trying to get icepicks tonight so I can get the Cloudfishing skill and actually be able to do my GC daily without a single one to show for it, I can agree with many of your ideas about more focusing toward specific fish with bait and the woes of RNG.
I also agree that there should be more value to doing fishing. Right now it is the red-headed stepchild of the gathering classses. I enjoy it, but it is not held to the same status as miner and botanist and with a few tweaks it could be.
How about the fishing folklore books?,
I think they should make them a little more useful. Or better say make fish in general more useful.
Have you tried Cat Became Hungry ? It's a crowd-sourced compendium of everything related to fishing in FFXIV. My wife highly recommends it.
Oo You must have fished at the wrong place.
They don't bite well but they aren't THAT scarce, after all they are a direct catch if I am not mistaken.
I fished them up in half an hour with the Lv 51 insect lure you can buy in western coerthas at Western coerthas; unfrozen pond.
I can recommend the site Silverbane linked. It has virtually all the information you could possibly need.
I agree though that being dependent on such a site is ludicrous game design. FF tells you waaay to little about the fish you want even after you caught it.
I do think that integrating all of the tools that are included on CBH should be implemented into the fishing log in game. Things like weather cycles, lure, and time frame should be available perhaps by an npc in the village nearby the fishing hole. This could make small talk and investigating npcs more worthwhile rather than ignoring them all the time. Once caught, the data could then be added to the person's log.
I think we could get the effect with fewer changes.
New skill: Attract Use a fish on the line to attract more of its kind. Releases the hooked fish (giving up 1 now for more over time, best for longer sessions) to increase that species' catch weight (on the drop table) by 100% of its base value per stack. Doesn't change weights for other fish. Max 4 stacks.
Buff chum. Now lasts 1 minute instead of 1 catch.
Cordials can be used while fishing.
New ALC "Bottled Weather" recipes to create temporary localized weather overrides. (can be used while fishing along with the cordial change).
Yes tackle box please. This is insane.
Combine patience and inefficient hooking, or add a "cancel" skill so you can purge them both at once. After you get your HQ double mooch on the line, you normally want to wait for it to expire before attempting the triple mooch to get back your catch rate.
And yeah, could we get some more info on the hooksets? Nobody is 100% sure that people are using them the right way even.
Nope, Unfrozen Pond using Stonefly Nymph. I love that site as well and I was in almost that exact spot. They are a direct catch so it didn't make any sense to me, either. I was going to try S Banepool tonight.
And yeah, the fishing log is nearly useless except as flavor text, unlike the gathering log which actually helps you.
Did anything ever come of Big Fishing? Searching through the forums this post came up:
This didn't ever end up happening did it?
Achievements are... well, completely worthless in my opinion, was hoping there would be something to show for catching them other than a brief achievement pop up that only you see.
Grekumahs post is from october 2014
and we got fish furnishing after that, achievments wich gave you 2 titles to show how awesome you are ("of Dragon's Deep" for completing a quest where you have to catch the 6 legendary fish and "Master Caster" for catching 100 different big fish) and another achievment for cathing 106 (all) different big fish wich gave you the ironworks fishing rod - wich was the best fishing rod for a few months and still nice to glamour for the show effect.
I am haveing problems catching red and blue script since the new patch. Previously I could catch 3 to 5 thunderbolt eels with no problem now i get one if im lucky. Tiny axolotl I have been 3 times and got one. When fishing illuminati perch i had to fish for an hour befor i got one. I have a friend who has red script fishing rod and is having the same trouble. Is anyone else finding that the better gear they have the worse the fishing gets? I wondered of there was a bug or something I also just got through 2 bladed jigs in half an hour.
it's just all RNG. i am wearing full i180 set with i170 belt and don't have any problems. at least not more than usual xD the chance to lose the bait (only the crafted ones) is higher if you lose the fish. and you lose the fish more often if you use patience but not the right hookset... so yeah, to save baits be careful with patience ^^/ to save GP you should only try to catch the fish you really want. so watch the animations when the fish bites and only hook the fish if he has the animation you are looking for. otherwise let them eat the bait and don't hook it.
Was there ever a video guide made for the fishing animations/tugs? To this day i find it extremely difficult to actually tell the differences other than the bigfish tug which would make the character stand up and controller vibration would be at max setting.
