I look nothing like my character. lol
I'm not short, I don't have pink hair, I'm not female, I don't have horns/scales, and my eyes are not blue.
I do not resemble my character in any way, shape, or form. I am only about 5'10", am female, and have brown hair and eyes. There's also the lack of scales, horns, tail, and gratuitously spiky anime hair to take into account. So no. Nothing like him. :3
The only time I try to make another version of myself in a game is when I'm playing The Sims. Then I marry myself off to a hot dude, and have lots of cute alien babies. Actually... I do play as "myself" in Terraria? Would that count? Lol!
I've got OCs that I write about, draw, and have customized ball jointed dolls of. I use those OCs when I create characters here, or in games like this, and try to make them as similar as possible. So it's quite common that I play both male, and female characters (I'm a guy btw), none of which looks like me. I guess my summoner here looks a bit like me though? But the only similarity between me and Krys, my dragoon, is that we're both really pale.
The most important thing is that you're having fun. :3
I have absolutely nothing in common with my character. I have never tried making myself in any game; getting to be someone else is part of the fun.
The only game where I create "myself" is The Sims.
I also prefer playing as female in every RPG that allows the choice of gender, while being a guy.
So my character and me have nothing in common. Except for the fact that I have a slight central heterochromia, while Elyza has Full heterochromia.
I started my character with similarities to myself and my WoW character, she has slowly changed to have more similarities to myself :p. I'm not super pretty so I don't ever like playing super, OMG, pretty characters and that is how I base my character creation on ^^.
Complete 180 have to look at this mug everyday don't need to see it in my escape from reality.
Sadly I'm not a purple-haired catboy in real life. :c I happen to be missing the purple, the cat, and the boy.
I usually play female characters, but when I play a male, I create them as tall as I am, so 7ft... So I play only roes, Au Ra and Elezens =(
It's not something I do for them to look like me, it's Just... I'm more used to being taller. It feels weird when I play a male, to whom I identify more, but who is as small as everybody else... It's for my comfort rather than appearance x)
In every MMO before this I use to make characters that look like me. Human male with dirty blond hair and blue eyes. This time around I decided to be a bit more interesting with green eyes and orange hair. The reason I went female is because the male clothing in this game is mostly meh and my healer partner forced me...:P
Hrm. Being a female, I always make females. I could play a guy but it would feel weird. So I make my retainers males and call them my Harem.
I do feel like my character is an extension of myself, but an idealised extension. There are many similarities, and some variances.
Similarities include: Gender, Skin colour, height, hair length/style is one I would wear IRL when possible, and always play a human race.
There isn't a large amount of control over face shape in FF14, but I try to stay to something closest to 'normal' for me but that looks appealing and mature - ie No exaggerated thick lips, no almond or bedroom style eyes, no giant noses, looks like a mature women in her late 20's.
The main differences on where I deviate are eye colour and hair colour.
IRL is brown/brown but I always go green eyes, chestnut red hair in game - this is what I wished I had IRL, and although I did dye my hair for a while have you ever tried to keep reds in your hair? It's difficult!
I have considered and wanted to switch to Au Ra, or a tall Elezen and have played in the fantasia screen several times playing around ready to make the switch - but I can't bring myself to do it. I love the way my hyur looks and she feels like 'me' in Eorzea - anything else wouldn't feel like 'me' and would ruin my immersion.
I usually play female characters in games that give me the choice, but when I realized this was a game where I could 1) make a male character that I actually found hot and 2) dress him in sexy gear on par with some of the female stuff, I had to take that opportunity so I created a male Duskwight who looks absolutely nothing like me.
And yes, I am currently a female Lala. Wanted to try it out and I adore her adorableness, but I'll be going back soon enough. I've never actually tried making a character that looks like me though, might try that out someday.
I never made a character to look like me! I usually adapt it into the world's lore. Like my Lalafell! At 1.0 he had "blind-like" eyes, and at 2.0 I changed them to look even more blind (because I was stuck on Aether for 5 years), and I don't know why, but I always end up making characters with white hair on every single MMORPG I play!
Quoted for Truth.
I play male though I have tried to play female but my Ego doesn't allow me to play them long, even if the female model is pleasing to see.
My toon is an exaggeration of myself image, so it does look like a part of myself. Dark skin, beard, black hair, medium build.
My character:
- 6'10'' elf guy
- The hair and beard of Jesus
- Scars & muscle tone set to maximum for optimum manliness
- Has a habit of donning a Moogle costume + Leopard print speedos and dancing in crowded areas
So yeah, pretty close to real life!
I am blessed because my blonde hair holds any color like a sponge, but when it fades, it fades all at once, and I look like a carrot. QwQ
The worst part, imo, is the actual coloring process. Any stray hairs that fall off you head while you're coloring? LOL. YOUR FLOOR LOOKS LIKE IT GOT ATTACKED BY A CAT.
I started putting newspaper on the heat vent before that first wash, because it was starting to look like some kind of hell demon was trying to claw its way out to eat the towels.
For awhile I use to dye my hair a natural red. I did it for so long that people at the job I had thought it was my natural color.
One of the girls was so sad when she found out I was actually blond. Kind of depressing. lol. Now I don't dye my hair.
That may be true for guys, but pretty much every female player except for very rare exceptions does play as a female ingame, too. I've been playing MMOs for 10+ years and I never once thought of my character's butt o-O
I think the latent homophobia present in many males make them overly concious about the lovely behinds of their male characters..;)
Like "I'm not gay! I don't like to stare at a catboy's butt!" xD
I like you :D We are the same, just different in that you are tall and I am short xD
No, but seriously, height is a huge part of how we experience everyday life. So it totally makes sense to be uncomfortable with having to look up to everyone or have trouble reaching something when you are used to be taller than everyone else in RL.
The only similarity is skin colour and gender. Irl I'm not a purple haired cat, and I have blue eyes instead of green.
The ony thing I've got in common with my character is the height, 2m00. Apart from that, I'm a guy, she's a FemRoe, I'm white, she's black, I've got brown hair/brown eyes, she's got golden hair/golden eyes.
So not really :p
And I play as a muscular busty femroe because I can barely stand being a guy in real life, so might as well.
No visual/physical similarities at all. I'm not female for one. My character is only a representation of my tastes. Classy mature woman. :)
She's based on me: body (hight and bust), face (Miqos have the most round faces 2nd only to Lalas), hair / skin / eye colour (including shape), ofc as close as possible.
Was tweaking the hair colour around for hours before finding something that looks most similar.
The cat features are nice too because I ♥ cats. :D
The way I see it, my character is an extension of myself into the game, if I can make her look similar, I'll feel more involved.
At first I also did experiment, to the point of going Lala but even then I tried to make her similar to myself. Sometimes I miss my Lala days. :c
Andevom and I have the same eye color, but that's about it.
I also probably dance about as poorly as he does.
I don't believe anyone will think something like that is wrong(one of my ex's was thin/petite and I've been with big women too). We all have preferences and it doesn't necessarily mean the person has to fit that preference either in order to be attractive.
Btw nobody better not dare derail this thread from my post >_> just keep on trucking.
My character is an extension of myself as well. I took a LOT of time tweaking it. From the best skin color, height to the voice and expression of the eyes/eyebrows, even the roundish nose. Was so happy when they added the freckles too XD. I cut/change his hair when I change mine IRL as well. LOL
I don't do this in every game but I feel very happy about thinking to my character as something like the recipient of my self in this virtual world and this is one of the reason I think I really "connected" to him and get a deep kind of immersion, especially during the main scenario.
The features that aren't possible in the real world, like being a catboy, the jobs and roles I use and prefers are by the way expression of myself as well like I love cats and I'm a very feline person.. so yeah, I feel completely one thing with my character, in and out, and I love it.
While Im not quite as toned as my Avatar, I am 6'1' and work out all week, facial features are as close as I could get them, I do wish I could rock the Blood red Warrior's Quirk, but my hair is pretty tame in RL XD
My character and I share the same gender and hair color/length, but other than that she was never intended to be a self-insert or similar to me.
My first character was very much like me, freckles, red hair, glasses, small but I got bored and made a whole plethora of alts that I switch between
My mmo characters used to resemble me, (same hair, skin, eye colour) and Dijana as she was in FFXI did kinda resemble me...character creation was limited in that game I guess. But she's gone through so many changes since then she's...kinda my opposite. Dark/tan skin instead of white, blonde instead of black, red eyes instead of green...yeah
Yeah, no, i'd hate to be staring at the back of my own head all day. If anything, my characters sometimes resemble what i would like to look like.
Realistically, i'd be closer to highlander male build with blue eyes and short brown hair, and way less muscle.
Now why would I do that?
Well, same gender, same hair color, same eye color and same skin tone, that's it. Wasn't even intended, I just thought it looked cool when I created her...
I've never though of characters in games as avatars of myself. I generally think of them as dolls for me to play dress up with. Or as actors with me being their director.
When I was a mi'quote (au ru now) I looked alot like myself ^_^ short cute redheaded female woot..but changed to au ru because well.....its elegant...
I took inspiration from Sword art online ans log horizon to come up with a character design i had many character looks ranging from fierce to goth loli, when i was forced to drop my old psn ID and rebought ff14/hw I made this lalafell. It pretty much a mix of what i look like irl, to a look i sported when i was 22. I picked lalafell because they are cute and I'm used to playing small characters (Link from Zelda games, and they look younger. Irl I'm 5ft tall 30 years old and people ask if I'm 17, and what high school i go to.
