So because they decided that an idea they had wasn't so great (let's face it, we already have a tank, melee, and caster egi; what more do we need?) and decided to alter it in order to accomplish what people are actually after (different looking egi's, or even carbuncles if you wish; most people just want variety in the way the look), they're untrustworthy? The PS3 version is little more than a PR gesture; it exists for no other reason than to fulfill the promises made in the 1.0 era. Without this context, it would have been ludicrous to release an essentially new MMO on a platform whose successor hit store shelves literally weeks later.

Sadly, we all have to suffer this goodwill for a few years more. I would guess when the PS3 reaches age 10 in 2016, SE will not drop support for PS3, but like FFXI on PS2, no longer release content or features with PS2 in mind.

By this estimate, PS3 limitations will exist at least through 4.0. ('A`)

Obviously they'll continue to support it through the 3.0 life cycle, but I can see it being dropped by the time 4.0 arrives. I started off on PS3 during the 2.0 beta and it was fine, because it was all I had at the time. But I mean, come on, the console is almost 9 years old now and its limitations are starting to have an impact on the rest of the players as well as the overall potential quality of the game.

I remember reading a interview last year where someone from SE said that majority of the Japanese players are playing on the PS3 and not PS4. If this was a NA/EU game, the PS3 would probaly be dropped, but since its not, I reckon aslong as there are alot of Japanese players on the PS3, we will not see it dropped. My friend used to play FFXIV on her PS3 and she always had long loading, mobs going *Poof* in a middle of a FATE and many more issues. She has a PS4 now and its a new world for her.

For those that can not afford a PS4, you dont need to buy it within a month or two. Just save a dollar or a euro a day (like a previous poster said) and you will be able to buy the PS4 in a year, if you are lucky, the PS4 will become cheaper in a year and you will get it earler. My friend did that aswell, she has alot of bills and instead of buy lunch at a store, she made her own and saved the money every month untill she could afford a PS4.

Yoshida already said in a interview that 4.0 is already being developed and it will come on the PS3. So Maybe we will see the PS3 dropped after 4 years when 5.0 gets released, but right now I guess we are stuck with the limitations.

Could you go look for any of these interviews, the latter one if you can only manage one? I remember Yoshida stating that PS3 support will be dropped at 4.0 at the earliest, and there was no guarantee that PS3 would continue to work then. There was nothing about 4.0 coming to PS3, that was for 3.0.

Aside from that, HW was obviously built with the current crop of low end PCs and the PS3 in mind as the lower end of the hardware spectrum. That's not going to change during the 3.X cycle, no amount of PC Master-race whining will change that. Come back in 2 years when 4.0 arrives, I doubt Ps3 will make that version's launch party.

No, because they said one thing and did something different. The reasoning behind it means little to me. I'm not saying they're bad people and horrible this and that, I am saying I take what they say with a grain of salt now, because for the very reason you said, things can change and they have every right to do so, it is their game after all.

From there on out, whatever they say is pointless to me..because they can and perhaps will change it anyway.
I stopped following stuff the devs say back when they changed the whole Egi thing...there is no point for me to bother anymore. Stuff comes out, I play it..either like or not, that's that lol.

Because the consoles are bringing a large player base to the game.... And no the PS4 will be able to handle this mmo for several years to come and when the PS4 becomes outdated the PS5 will be ready to take its place.

In case it wasn't clear enough, he was making no comparison or connection of FFXV and XIV. What he was going for is that if people were to buy a Ps4/XV Bundle they would now own a PS4. Around the same time they could offer a Free PS4 Upgrade to those people who now own said PS4 if they were playing XIV on PS3 Prior.

Woosh... the sound of the point flying past yours. The target audiences are not the same. marketing a FFXV PS4 bundle might ship some consoles, but it's not going to make dropping PS3 support hapoen. FFXV and FFXIV are very different games with different audiences. Sure there is some overlap, but not enough to make even a dent in PS3 usage for FFXIV.

I see them dropping ps3 support in NA for sure once the Hardware is no longer being sold new @ retail. I see the units available in my area dwindling but they are still being sold brand new. Like they did with ffxi and the new expansion, once the ps2 was no longer sold in NA they dropped support for it. I see the same thing happening with FFXIV by that time.

Yeah, not everyone can afford a top of the line PC either. And nobody will spend over 1k just to play one game.

The PS4 runs the game the same if not better than the average user's PC. ( i think PS4 settings are somewhere between desktop high and maximum settings)

So if you're saying that the PS4 is also holding the game back, then you're basically throwing away the average user's PC as well.'

Also, 1.0 style graphics, while nice, were just too much, and even the highest end PCs struggled to run it. A potted plant having as many shaders and polygons as a player character was way too much. Once the PS3 gets dropped, we might see higher texture quality, our full character animations again, more character customization options, among other things. But we'll never get full 1.0 graphics ever again, because they were an absolute mess.

DX11 support was released simultaneously with Heavensward. SE clearly has an interest in advancing the tech behind their game--as well they should, being one of the few, successful subscription-based MMOs on the market--and the PS3 is a significant hurdle in that pursuit.

If you really think they will improve the graphics just by dropping a console then you should really stop holding your breath else you'll faint. People had been demanding this with XI for literal years and Square never did and probably never will. WoW is doing a graphical upgrade but that's more to catch up with games like XIV and it's only on PC. Sure, PS3 players had a chance (it ended in May) to upgrade but you talk like everyone has a PS4 now, a pretty gross assumption there.

WoW's improved its engine significantly over the years (includings the visuals of course) to compete with MMOs as they came and died out. Do you honestly believe the game would have survived if it still looked like what it did back in Vanilla, and things like animations and model quality didn't improve quite a bit? The reason they couldn't improve FFXI significantly was due to the PS2, but back when FFXI was released the PS2 was still in its prime, this isn't, and was never the case with the PS3.

As Yoshida stated, they want to compete with things like Everquest Next and all future MMOs, I don't know if you've ever seen that but the physics and visuals are very nice, and that was back in 2013. WoW is no longer the competitor it used to be, and I can see it dying down if Legion is flop like WoD. The PS3 was dead on the release of FFXIV (or rather, very outdated). The parts it's holding the game is quite clear, raids like CT and ST have to be separated with loading screens, areas are separated and isn't just one seamless world, and as the interview stated earlier, they can't have incredibly large scale FATEs (this would also limit their boss design in raids, dungeons and trials).

Yoshida has said he wants the game to last 10 years, and keeping PS3 around isn't the way to achieve that. By the time 4.0 rolls around it'll probably be 2017, and the PS3 will be 10 years old. No one should expect 10 year old hardware to keep being supported then, nor should they demand stifling the game because they can't move past decade old technology.

I keep laughing when I see people assuming that every facet of the game will get a drastic improvement when PS3 is finally dropped, notably that graphics will go back to 1.0 quality.

Yoshi himself has stated that 1.0 graphics were just too over the top and has no intention of ever going back to them, he prefers performance over visual quality, and rightly so.

All we're likely to see improve when PS3 support is dropped, are more UI options, larger scale encounters, and maybe some more character options, such as saving glamours to client side.

Most MMOs on the market don't do a complete overhaul on graphics, unless their game is severely out dated, of which, FFXIV is not.

Not really unless they started redoing everything. This game was created with PS3 in mind. Alot of people blame PS3 for the shortcomings, but honestly this game falls short because of the structure. They have hard times even dealing with simple things like cool down resets and this isn't because of PS3 limitations. When they drop PS3 that won't change how badly structured the game is. Short of a complete restructuring it's not going to change much. DX11 is your graphic increase. Don't expect anything more when they drop support for PS3.

The graphics of PS4 and PC have nothing to do with PS3. What is with the FFXI/FFXIV community and thinking graphics on one system have anything to do with graphics on another? If they chose to every character on ps3 could be changed to big cubes and it would have no effect on the other systems.

The only limits the ps3 has on the other systems is things like UI changes that would offer an advantage to people not on ps3.. thats it.

I honestly wouldn't be surprised if we got a response to this like, "We are sorry, but we are currently unable to drop support for the PS3 due to PS3 limitations." Actually, I'd probably laugh my butt off...

It was almost 10 years before WoWs races got graphic and animation updates. All of the old wow content looks exactly the way it did before... they have added things like new lighting effects and water/lava effects.

FFXIV can't be around for 10 years but FFXI managed to do exactly that with the PS2.

WoW's visuals improved with every expansion starting from Cataclysm (well before then, but that was when the most major graphic improvements were made, if you compare WoD's visuals to something from Vanilla to WoD you'll notice a major difference. I'm not just talking about their races, but monsters, environments, raids, dungeons, the entire picture. Races are but a small part in that overall. There's a hugely apparent difference in graphics when traveling from old content to new content, which can be slightly jarring but it works due to its cartoony visuals.

FFXI lasted 10 years sure (losing a lot of its player base as it aged as things go) but by the time the PS3 was released and actually sold a decent amount (it had a very rough start if you can't remember) FFXI was 5-6 years old. This isn't the case with FFXIV as I stated in my posted, but you seemed to ignore that so I expect you to do the same again here.

Here is the catch that I think people don't understand: Most Japanese players do not own what would conventionally be called a "gaming" PC. The PC market in Japan isn't really a thing at all. It's kind of there but it is vanishingly small compared to the handheld/console market.

The PS3 launch of FF14 was instrumental in getting the Japanese players on board with ARR. It may seem like a very questionable decision now, but no small part of the game's success in Japan is owed to it being available for console players. Because like it or not, that is their market in Japan. One of the primary reasons 1.0 failed in Japan was lack of a console version; it was PC version or nothing

They would need to offer PS3 players a very big incentive to move to PS4 or PC; it's not OK from a business perspective to just suddenly turn to a chunk of your playerbase and say "sorry, you need to buy a $399 hardware upgrade now to keep playing the game."

They are likely to continue PS3 support in Japan longer than they do in other regions just for this reason. PS2 support for FFXI continued in Japan for longer there than it did in North America/Europe. I wouldn't be surprised if the next expansion has PS3 support in Japan but not for other regions, with it being phased out entirely by 5.0 (or at the latest, 6.0, but I think that's pushing it even considering FFXI's example--it didn't completely drop PS2 support until 2013).

Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't most Japanese people tend to stray away from consoles nowadays? Mobile seems to be the larger focus (the reason why you see more and more Japanese developers focusing on mobile) and the PC gaming market is still quite small, but it is growing exponentially when compared to the minuscule numbers it was at a few years ago. Regardless of all that, we don't know how man actually play on PS3 or PS4, but I'd imagine PS3 is quite a small number making less than 5-10% of the population, at least half of which would move towards PS4 or PC when forced to. Why? Because if they made up anywhere near 20%+ Yoshida would never suggest dropping PS3 support, at least until it the numbers dropped enough for them to consider the sacrifice the worth in sub numbers (or if they PS3 was a really major block in them developing something they haven't announced yet).

I believe the majority of Japanese players have moved towards PS4 or PC at this point, I can't speak from my experience as I only know two Japanese players but that's two out of 300,000+ (they use PC though), but if they're able to afford it there's absolutely no reason not to go for the vastly better experience. Finally, they're not going to just suddenly turn and tell them to spend $400 or quit playing, it would need to be told several months in advanced, at least 4-6 months before the 4.0 if they plan to drop it then.

It should be at least written as an official announcement on the FFXIV launcher or lodestone; PS3 support will be dropped on dd/mm/yyyy.

Which is still incorrect, Adoulin was released for the PS2 in Japan, you can see this in the supported consoles of the official Adoulin page for Japanese audiences. Click the Japanese flag at the top if it loads as another language. This isn't to say they aren't dropping consoles, but it certainly wasn't in 2013. To expand on why bother with consoles at all... it's a matter of cost. 1.0 needed, at the time, the absolute best PCs to run it at it's almost-best (needed a Crysis-rated gaming PC for the best performance). Average people usually save up to buy such a system a piece at a time or just buy a piece here and there to upgrade an existing system. Consoles, though, don't have the same overhead as a PC. They are designed to work with the average TV and don't tax an electric bill quite as bad. Honestly, the only people who think getting a gaming PC is just a matter of... getting a gaming PC are also people with disposable incomes of 'dubious source'.

I could have sworn that's when they dropped it, but I'm probably misattributing that to the end of official support in NA. I know they're in the process of phasing it out completely at least, but I haven't kept up with the news all that well so I probably just got my memory muddled.

It will not see drop in support pre 4.x This is why. everyone on PS3 paid for HW... would get screwed.

They would need to get off there high house. and give everyone a free PS4 again and even PC version.

A free what? I think you mean transfer, a free console would be a bit expensive. And, really, it wasn't free. You were surrendering your PS3 registration for a PS4 registration. Those that took advantage of the transfer can't play the PS3 version unless they go out and buy it all over again. They don't really have a reason to relaunch the promotion, it ran for far longer than originally intended before they finally stopped the service in May of this year. What really needs to happen is for people to stop bashing on PS3 players like they're some kind of red-headed step child. Those players are paying customers just like you, and fully chose the console they are playing on over all other alternatives. Maybe there's a reason for that, a very good reason at that.
