OP, look at this image again. Yes. There is an equal amount for both healers and tanks. But there are only 38% of them total as opposed to 62% DPS. That means there is 24% MORE DPS classes playing/queuing than tanks and healers. Which means longer queue times for the majority while waiting for the minority, and more demand for the minority as well.

I don't see where all this hate on DF is coming from... All I ever do is group with randoms. I mostly tank since that gives the the bonus. Never have problems. Sometimes we may wipe a time or two on a boss, or from random stupidity. But we just pick up keep going and win. The people I usually see cause the problems are the ones that will bail because we are not playing "perfect" enough. Rage quitters, speed runners, people that think if you don't play their way then you automatically suck. Those are the issue. People that actually have patience and play for fun are the ones getting abused. Tank healer DPS, it don't matter the class.

Tank&Healer = big responsabilities (i'm not talking about gameplay difficulties)

All those tanks that you never see in DF, they come in as dps cause no one will say anything to them in particular. But as a tank, they are openly critizied : about stance, about pull size, about aggro loss, about his gear (HP, Str)
If there is 19% players that actively play tank in the game, half of them can't stand the possibility that they are going to be insulted or criticized.

Cause there is certainly as many bad tanks as bad dps/healer in %

All I know is the last time someone in my group wanted to kvetch at me about my tanking(I was still leveling), they got told by the healer to "STFU, you wanna bitch, you roll a tank and do it yourself".

I was proud of him. Lol.

Because if you have one bad experience and 99 good ones the bad one sticks with you and thus ruins everything.

Honesty you guys need to learn to read charts. Or at least put them in perspective. Fact: One of the most common Dps Jobs is the Dragoon. Fact; Every Dragoon has to have a level 15 Marauder leveled. They may never touch the class again but they are counted under the 19 percent of tanks. 19 percent of all characters aren't end game tanks. If you've hit end game iwth a tank there's very little reason to do leveling roulette.

If we had maybe more complete sets of data we could comment but we don't we have a broad list that doesn't even take into account the fact that a character could have everything unlocked and leave more of them at level 1.

I Qued up on my DRK for my daily, I got Fractal. This NIN.. Anyone know of Leroy Jenkins?, well if you haven't look it up.. I almost could of swore this NIN was him.. But anyway, he kept running ahead, pulling whatever he wanted and laying into it hard core. To a point I stopped and stared, but the WHM wouldn't stop healing him. I didn't want to cause a wipe so I protected the other DD and the WHM. I attempted a Vote kick, but the WHM said no. I just about left even though it was my daily, but instead I kept going but refused to do anything to take hate from the NIN, if the WHM wants him she/he can heal him so be it. In short, junk like this is why tanks don't want to Que in DF with randoms. So next time you see a DPS doing this, thank them ok!

Except the chart says between level 31-60, so unless every dragoon has marauder levelled to 31 (which I doubt) then those dragoons aren't counted in that 19%.

Actually the Chart accounts for this and only accounts for healers and tanks above lvl 31 - 60 :) You may need to read a little more!

My bad. It still has the issue of counting a large number of people who opened up dark knight leveled it for maybe for the intial class quest and stopped.. which looks like 3/4s did.

in a situation like this , i polite ask the nin to stop...sometimes even twice, doesnt stop?,i ask the party , kick the guy , or kick me , your choice.....if he is kicked we wait 1s for another dps , if they kick me , im out and free to queue again they have to wait for a tank , win-win.

anyway , i have been doing DF for weeks and outside some wipes in some trial, or some guy ragequiting :rolleyes: , i could say 95% of the partys have been sucessfull and nothing more than hello! , and ty , see you again!.

hell i remember 1 week ago , i was on my sch , first pull lots of mobs , i was speaking with the FC , all was under control , i have done this pull 50 times already, then while chatting tank died....i was O_O , apologised to the party because it was my fault , tank said NP , we completed it w/o issues , mistakes happen ^^;

Guessing I'm somewhere around 400 dungeon runs, not sure if you can actually tell how many, but I got the dungeon master title (300) a while ago. In all those runs it was mostly DF. I did do a couple PF but never had a full group. I can only recount 2 bad runs. The first was me having no idea what a tank was (first mmo) and just going all out hacking and slashing, though we finished the run. The other was Garuda ex, didn't finish but wasn't completely my fault.

Anyways I have never had people comment on my gear, play style, pull size, too fast, too slow etc.. Maybe I've been extremely lucky but I know I'm not that lucky. I'm guessing its only the bad runs that are talked about, possibly scaring some away from it and not actually experiencing it. Or one bad run they had and left tanking for good, I mean if quit after that first run I had no clue, and people were calling me out, where would I be now?

I can go on with some ole fashion cliche sayings like, "you have to break a few eggs to make an omelette", or "when life gives you lemons, make lemonade". It made me a better tank. I came here gathered up some info got advice learned what I was suppose to do. Now I'm the biggest baddest PUG DF tank walking around Malboro you'll ever meet. :cool:

I'm just joking of course. I got my humble pie and I'm eating it too.

I don't tank dungeons because most people that play this game are awful at it. Most healers don't DPS, half the DPS get beat by the tank. I'd rather spend 10 minutes tabbed out and 20 minutes in the dungeon instead of 30 minutes in the dungeon, so I queue as SCH/SMN since I can do more DPS.

You can check them under Achievements > Battle > Dungeon.

Currently I'm at 4,371 dungeon runs. I main heals and I can honestly say most dungeon runs are smooth. Some are slow because the DPS are bad, but it doesn't bother me because it's just a dungeon, not a raid. Plus my healer DPS can carry everyone to victory. lol. Truly bad ones are rare and mostly happen when new dungeons come out.

Sometimes when I tank I get yelled at. I do it casually. One time I forgot to turn on shield oath for the first mob pull of a pre-50 dungeon. I didn't lose aggro but the healer ended up calling me a retard, etc. People can be vicious to new tanks.

tl;dr I understand why some people stay away from tanking.

Playing with an entire group of strangers can be extremely stressful/awkward for some so having just one bad experience can easily be off-putting for a lot of people and change their view of the DF forever. So, I think when a lot of people say "DF sucks" or whatever, what they actually mean is "DF has the chance, however small, to be a really terrible experience and I would rather just not put up with it" and, honestly, I get why people would feel that way.

I too have had vastly more good and/or forgettable experiences compared to outright negative ones when using the DF, but every bad experience, however few and far between, brings me closer and closer to giving up the DF. My tolerance for bs, especially in a video game of all things, dwindles as I get older.

I always go DF as a tank, simply because I usually prefer to end my roulette as fast as I can and the bonus is always, well, a bonus. If I get peeps I go with them, but if that can't be done it's DF all the way.

Still I know a lot of players have issues with DF as a tank (or healer), but frankly as a tank I don't get that a lot. Sure I can think of a couple of times where I was bashed because I was slow or I overpulled - and always apologized for that, because good manners are still pretty useful to have - but I have enough experience and "I don't give a crap" factor to avoid that from stopping me

Besides, nothing beats the "Do you pay my subscription" reply!

As I said, "unconstructive criticism" doesn't work, so vote dismiss them which success most of the time work, plus usually those people are the DPS, healers are usually chill.

Simply if the tanks tank they are going to be spending a long time in the dungeon instead due to your every day DPS which is usually quite bad, so either we just queue up as DPS or run with friends for a run that takes a lot less time. As a WAR in i180 gear I am the top DPS about 90% of the time in DF.

DF for dungeons? Rarely a problem tanking them. All of the dungeon content is pretty much faceroll at this point, and the only complications I've experienced tanking them lately has been the occasional impatient, DPSing, gogogogo #pullemall healer.
DF for extreme primals? This is the only place I can say the "DF players are trash" narrative I've heard so much of lately holds water. Not only will I not tank these, I won't spend more than 30 minutes attempting them with any job if progress isn't being made. Read a guide, watch a video, or gtfo my DF.

So what if it does? Everyone has different levels of tolerance to abuse, and some people are quite sensitive. I've been turned off of tanking for a couple months after being persistently harassed by a healer to pull more in a leveling dungeon until I up and left. What gets under your skin today might have bounced off tomorrow, but when it does get under your skin it can be an experience that sticks with you.

Having a thick skin certainly helps when you're putting yourself in an anonymous environment like this, but saying you should toughen up because there are jerks in the world doesn't make it ok to be a jerk. People will still have crap days, get stressed out, or be dealing with a myriad of problems outside the game, and come to Eorzea to have fun and chill. Piling on unnecessary hate from your own party members doesn't service anyone, it just makes one person feel like trash. Don't pretend for a second abusive behavior from randoms is ok, because yes, even one or two snide remarks from a digital avatar can be hurtful when said at the wrong time and place.

The only times I have seen tanks get called out (which many of you apparently fear) is when they keep losing agro all the time. Like literally all the time. Or completely fail mechanics.

So it looks like the only tanks getting called out are the bad ones. That would mean bad tanks stay out of DF for the most part. I call winning! :X

For me, doesn't matter about the pressure. Honestly, never felt pressure with any of my jobs.

However, dealing with awful players is by far the worst for tank, if only because it slows the party down. If I go as DPS, I can ensure we are killing stuff at least an OK pace.

Fastest Neverreap with my SMN -> 14 minutes
Fastest Neverreap with my PLD -> closer to 35 minutes

Some people are saying that healing is just "Cure and go AFK", the same goes for tank "Flash/Overpower 3x and go AFK", if you want to be that bad, macro 5 overpower / flash and you can watch Netflix. The only time that I think tank is stressful is if its your FIRST time on that dungeon, then yeah, people will expect that you lead without having a clue.

You know what people pay more attention than your little tanker 3d model? Their HP bars, if anything goes wrong, no matter what, the healer will be blamed, because if someones HP bar reachs 0, obviously is the healers fault, right?

I'm sorry, but I feel that I have much more control of the fight as a healer. I can fix other players mistakes (Not talking about savage, but I'm sure most here arent aswell), I can cast shields on the newbie that I know will eat unnecessary damage, I can push DPS, I can keep the bad tank alive with good use of CDs most of the time. As a tank you will just feel impotent with a bad party, you will do DPS and move the mobs/boss where you please, after that you can just pray that your party is good enough.

(And if its a DPS, usually they have no idea what they are saying, and claim to play a tank, and know, while they dont know. And if it's a healer, its usually someone who wants the run to go differently, but the tank isnt actually doing bad.)

I'm sorry, but when DPS start trolling you, by purposely making sure to never attack your target (and I dont mean occasionally mistake which target u fight, I mean straight up try to, and you can trick them, by purposely switching targets, only to see them start switching off their target, once they realize you switched to their target)
They start using tactics that require purposeful intent, to drag out fights, or keep mobs alive. (Such as continuously stunning bombs as the bombs repeatedly use self destruct, and then complain the tank isnt the one stunning it, when I marked a completely different mob to be attacked, because I knew they would just self destruct, and its a waste of time fighting them.)
The typical NIN who will cut your threat in half, or the ranged DPS who will begin attacking before you're in range of a shield lob, tomahawk, w/e, if you even slightly slip up, and get behind on a single pull, despite being far enough ahead of the group 90% of the dungeon, to where the healer can barely get to you in time, before you start going down. (All the while complaining you are both too fast and too slow.)

These are the most common issues most competent tanks run into, and yet, these are all the BS things DPS love to complain about, as if it's solely the tank who needs to "git gud".
All the while standing in AoEs, and doing sub par DPS, blowing CDs at the start of a pull, but 10s later mobs stop taking dmg, and the fight seems to last forever.

Reasons to avoid Tanking the DF:
- Over eager DPS pulling more mobs.
- "bored" healers pulling more mobs.
- GOGOGO FASTER FASTER WHERES YOUR STR GEAR NOOB HURRY UP WHY ARENT YOU PULLING MORE.
- DPS ignoring marks and/or hitting any mob except that which the tank is focusing on.
- DPS and Healers going to town on mobs with every cooldown blown when I'm trying to gather up the pack into a neat little ball.
- People that frequently knockback the Tanks target.
- Healers that put their personal DPS above keeping the tank alive.
- Healers dropping Regens before a pull.

Reasons to avoid healing the DF:
-Tanks that pull more than they can reasonably handle.
-Tanks that never use Cooldowns.
-DPS standing in the fire. (Tanks too sometimes)

Reasons to avoid playing DPS in the DF:
-Tanks that struggle to hold enmity (usually only a problem when overgearing the Tank).

I can see why Tanks avoid the DF. Can you?

The OP asks why tanks are less likely to be found in the DF environment. When tanks don't perform up to snuff, they get called out, cussed out, harassed, kicked, and in some times very hostile ways. There's another thread on the front page about bad DPS, there's a thread in another sub-forum asking what's up with lazy healers that don't DPS. There are bad players in every role, but tanks are very visible and very openly criticized.

It's all well and good that you can chase all the bads out of the DF, but when you simultaneously kill those players' desire to learn and improve that class, it's no surprise that every single roulette calls for a tank at every step of the way. Bad players can eventually become good, it may not be immediately noticeable, and chances are it'll never happen by the end of the run you're in, but they might never get that chance if their mistakes are being picked apart by more experienced players and aggressively criticized at every turn. To some, wading through all the hostility to get better at your class isn't worth it when you just want to sit down in the afternoon and play a video game and actually enjoy it.

Well I sure am glad you super leet tanks avoid DF. With such inflated egos I couldn't see anything else on the screen.

At 180 ilvl, tanks should wear str in expert roulette, I understand vit when closer to 145 though.
Please don't mark as a tank, not useful since Brayflox normal (except raids)
If both DPS and heals are pulling more mobs, you're probably pulling too slowly (as a PLD SCH and SMN, I've only seen this happen once since expansion hit)
Haven't seen a knockback on the target since level like 15

For healers:
You could easily add more here, such as people yelling at you for not DPSing or for DPSing etc. However, again, that's not a very common occurence

DPS:
I'd like to add, tanks that pull 2 mobs at a time when you're a SMN

I tank full time in my fc for savage, primals, maps etc. I'm on war 24/7. When I do my roulettes I go on drg because it's the only chance I have to play it. I'll only go on war for roulettes if I go with a friend or 3 from my circles.

Also i can watch Netflix and dps in loldungeons. On tank 8 have to give it my full attention or risk killing everyone. Sometimes you just gotta relax and dps jobs you can function with a much lower level of concentration.

I'm guessing it's because a lot of tanks are Diva-Princesses that feel that going into DF will match them up with people that are beneath them. Or, they enter instances and drop immediately when it's not a dungeon of their liking (also a Diva-Princess mentality).

I´ll be straight I use DF almost everyday (heal). Most of my runs have been decent to smooth- not comparable to runs with my static or fc but good enough to get it done. I dont really expect more than that. If you´ve ever done any task with random people you dont expect things to go perfectly well either. Before i started on FFXIV i played LoL so nothing I´ve heard was as toxic as what I´m used to.
I´m fine with everything whether a tank wants to have vit or str acc - given they know how to use their cooldowns (and yes i do like to dps while i heal). Most of the time I just try to treat others as I´d like to be treated myself. We were all bad at some point - mostly because we didnt know better. If people want help it´s great (because for me at least it´s not a waste of time to help someone out). If they dont or if they are jerks - well that´s too bad but it wont ruin my day. Most duties can be finished anyway. Can´t really change people only how you react to it.

Ill wear my Warriors VIT set at i190 if i damn well please. With 25k HP, the Healer can safely DPS for much longer than if i was rolling about with 14k (A common occurrence for my AST who consequently gets 2 - 3 Gravity bombs per pack if Im lucky because every 2 seconds the Tank needs a Benefic II spam or he dies even with 3 Regen effects on him).
Gravity/Holy spam kills a trash pack faster than a STR Tank will.
I mark my primary target or targets with specific debuffs that are detrimental to me (Such as Vulnerabilties in Neverreap), if it has nothing threatening or I'm planning to AoE, I wont mark. Its that simple. To say its useless is quite ignorant. if i can take less damage as a Tank, why the hell shouldn't I? Especially if all it took was a split second to mark my target.
I'm sorry these 12 mobs were not enough for you, Go ahead and pull that whole other room while I drop every emergency cooldown I've got, including Elixirs, because clearly I'm not pulling enough.
Thats funny, Just had a Machinist in my Neverreap who hit his knockback every 30 seconds without fail. So grats on never running into anyone who does that for you.

Its that simple. To say its useless is quite ignorant. if i can take less damage as a Tank, why the hell shouldn't I? Especially if all it took was a split second to mark my target.
I'm sorry these 12 mobs were not enough for you, Go ahead and pull that whole other room while I drop every emergency cooldown I've got, including Elixirs, because clearly I'm not pulling enough.
Thats funny, Just had a Machinist in my Neverreap who hit his knockback every 30 seconds without fail. So grats on never running into anyone who does that for you.

Do as you like, but STR WAR does insane damage. Healer can still DPS even if you are wearing STR. The added damage from the extra hp is less.

Anyway, I don't really want to go over it all, but meh+


If you like, as a SMN i can run in and say I will only cast Ruin, because I want to play how I damn well please.

Usually the DPS are too busy tunnel visioning their abilities to dodge AoEs, or too busy tunnel visioning Netflix, to watch the game.
So it's quite surprising anyone was even able to notice our massive egos.
