I don't mind the cash shop as such, because none of the items there offer any tangible advantage. I just find the selection of glamour items a bit puzzling.
Why put in recurring, seasonal items that you could reasonably offer every time the respective event comes around, which is once a year, but not stuff from events of which you never know if nor when they come around?
That seems the wrong way around to me and I am kinda glad the rising did not introduce anything spectacular, because the items are not going to the cash shop. As it is, anyone but the most diehard Yugiri/Iceheart fans should be able to cope, minions don't tend to be ragingly popular vanity assets (Unlike haircuts, see the bazillion "does lightning return?" threads). But it just doesn't sit right in general.
Perhaps it's just me, though.
The main worry I have about cash shops is that they'll devolve into Warlords of Draenor types (World of Warcraft expansion) where all the cool mounts (that honestly should have been obtained in-game) are in the shop and you get sad, generic, recolored wolves everywhere, even in zones where there are no wolves (look up Laughing Skull if you're interested).
Not to mention they lost about half of their total subs since that expansion dropped, but are able to cushion that loss because of the 'value-added services' (cash shop).
That was one of the reasons I dropped Warcraft and picked up FF14.
I'd appreciate if it just sold unique stuff (like Sleipnir) or unsellable things that are difficult to come-by in-game (like the rare dyes). I bought Sleipnir because after over a year I still haven't won lot on any Primal pony, for example.
Things like seasonal items though should be kept to the NPC vendors during seasonal events. I mean, sure, do put them in the Mog Station for those who MISS the event (you never know during what time of the year you'd feel like wearing a Reindeer suit). But during the events, I feel the items should be up for sale in-game, every year, without fail. Gear, minions, furniture, you name it. If I had the chance to get something for free, I don't see why someone who subbed a year later shouldn't.
I hope you didn't understand it as if I want stuff like Savage gear in the cash shop...
That's not my point.
My point is that there is stuff that many people can't get everywhere, a ton of stuff is gated, hidden, etc. why care about some vanity being gated by money, when other stuff is gated by time? It's pretty much the same, and it all has a place in this game.
