Amen to that... I was on Balmung back when it was Besaid in 1.0. I ended up leaving the server when they had the mass transfer dealio after witnessing /say ERP anal sex in Ul'dah. That kinda killed RP for me XD. Sadly, the open channel ERP wasn't an isolated thing. I knew I was starting on the unofficial RP server, and I thought that was cool, but having random folk try to start ERP with you wasn't fun at all. x_x


I remember a few months ago when WoD grinding was the thing~ I had one awesome run til we got to the last boss; the other healer in my party had been afk for most of the run, and when he was there he'd basically just sit in a corner and occasionally cast a heal on himself.
With my name being Fluffy Pancake, I'll occasionally get food-related jokes thrown my way, and I'll totally roll along with it and encourage gratuitous use of butter. It's highly satirical and no one in their right mind could actually be serious in thinking that I was RPing being a freaking Pancake... except one person.

A healer from another party got pretty butthurt when my PLD decided to go all suicide squad on the last boss; he took one too many hits, and it was at a time when half my party decided they wanted to eat ALL THE DAMAGE, so he died (sorry!), and the other healer was in the corner with a finger in his nose.
I raised the paladin, all is well for a few seconds until I realize that he provoked the boss off another tank who was doing far better than he was, and then BLAM! dead again.
PT is having a whale of a time, we're cracking jokes in pt chat and having a really good time.

I raise again... this time he's BoD'd and he runs in, vokes, and dies in a few hits while I'm still trying to get my party topped off because they wanted to eat all the damage (omnomnom).

At which point, Uptight Healermcdouche starts screaming at me, and I'm in disbelief, my party is in disbelief. "Dude, I think she seriously thinks you're RPing a pancake..."
Laffs were had. And no, I don't think I'm a pancake, or RP one. But if someone's going to offer me a tub of maple syrup, then it'd be really rude to say no!

To RP is to Role Play.

You create an in depth and unique story for where your character came from and where it's going and you pretend to really be a part of that story. You don't refer to yourself or your real life unless unless you're talking OOC (Out Of Character) and the way you play may be altered by something your character experiences. This. They were probably just trolls. Manny players that are not rol players do that. The rol playing comunity is usually quite respectful.


Anyway, as a rol player, I woud say that MMOs don't fit well for rol playing. The world is just not inmersive enought. Go and find Neverwinter Nights (1 or 2, both are still quite active even if they don't have official support), find a persistent world server with an ambientation that suits you, and you'll find out what rol playing can be. It's a totally diferent and awesome experience.

I don't mind rpers anyplace I just never encounter them for some reason, similar to rainbows lol [see thread]. I used to rp a lot in text in chatrooms on mirc so I kind of have a sentiment for it as it makes me nostalgic but I don't have any problems with it in a battle, too busy trying to figure out wtf is going on most of the time to notice.

I think I remember at least one instance of running into an RP'er in DF. I believe it was in Stone Vigil normal mode and they were the healer. They would spend so much time typing out RP things in chat, with excessive use of ellipses I might add, that they would leave people dead for excruciatingly long periods of time to type out their RP whatever in chat. Would sit there dps'ing stuff and would be thinking "Why is the other dps still dead? I know I saw the healer swiftcast+raise earlier and I haven't heard the sound effect for a while, so I know it's not on cd." On top of that there was a new person in the dungeon, and they gave extremely vague and odd explanations because of their RP. Decided to just keep my mouth shut the whole run and not say a word, didn't wanna start something that would result in an abandon. Feel bad for people when their first run of a dungeon results in an abandon.

Anyhow, I don't care if you RP, I don't have a problem with people who like it. Just please keep it out of DF and save your fellow players who don't RP some headaches.

That must be a very, Very, VERY, tiny playerbase who is like that. I have never seen such behaviour in a DF. I only was grouped once with people that roleplayed during the dungeon. But they did it in a way that it didn't hurt the dungeon run.

Might be a joke, but this has been the case with all the bards that I have met in DF. I guess they were all RPing.

I (used to) love Roleplaying, but with FFXIV, I cant seem to find a community on my server and after months of searching, I have decided to quit the idea of Roleplaying in FFXIV.

This happened to me before but the RP'r was the dark knight. Longest dungeon ever. Another time it was the black mage but we just left him behind. And I agree there is nothing wrong with it but they should pre form a party for that sort of thing. It is very inconsiderate of other people's time.

Heh first time I entered T9 helping some people as a pug. Had no clue what the fight was about, just got some scrambled info. As a bard took a rock straight to the face... and lived through it - and this was pre-echo days. People sure did get excited about it screaming in TS and I couldn't really understand them cause they were overdoing it hehe.

I've never seen this kind of behavior, and I'm on a big unofficial RP server so I get grouped with them a lot more than not. I think either you met trolls, or you're trolling yourself.

I really don't understand why people have this misconception about roleplayers.

We are people. We play the game. Most of us do a lot more than just roleplay. Our guild chats are hardly any different than any other, save for the added conversation topics of discussing each other's plots and characters and such. Stop basing your perceptions of us on trolls like the OP encountered, who aren't even actually roleplayers.

All I meant was I wouldn't know if I'd be able to tell if they were RP'ing or being serious while talking to them. I'm not basing my perceptions on the OP's, I'm basing it on the fact that I've never encountered one before and wouldn't know what to expect (just like I said in my previous post, I have never seen anyone RP before).

Sorry. It's just a very common and tired thing to hear from a lot of people who don't care for roleplayers. They pretend we're all ERPers, or we do things like what the OP encountered, or they think all we do is roleplay and are therefor awful at the game... >_< I had a bit of a knee-jerk defensive reaction, especially as a lot of people in this thread seem to be accepting at face-value that the OP's encounters were actual roleplayers.

Since most of us have encountered at least one in the dungeons, I would not be surprised if folks like the OP have encountered more than one, especially on Aether data center.

The worst is RP macros in every single battle action.

Very few actions in this game need a macro - Raise, Provoke, occasionally Virus or Eye for an Eye to avoid wasting them since they don't stack, Ballad or Foes to avoid wasting bard MP in multi-bard situations... that's about it. But I have seen screenshots of people, whether RPers or just inconsiderate jerks, with every action having its own line of text.

My point was that those players who do the things the OP described are usually just trolls. They aren't roleplayers. We don't do that. They're trolls who think roleplayers are dumb and who want to use "rp" as an excuse to troll someone's dungeon run.

The text macros aren't really something associated with roleplayers either. The people I've encountered who do that I actually know for a fact to not engage in roleplay. They just do it either because they genuinely think it's cool, or again they're doing it to get a rise out of others they play with.

Yes it does. It's extremely rare in my experience, but it does happen.
I've had a df party who were RPing, and would spend more time getting in position for screenshots rather than attacking enemies. When they got what they needed, they dropped.
Behavior like that isn't exclusive to RPers, of course, and this thread could be made about the myriad of rude people that can make a df run unpleasant.

This is called the "no true scotsman" fallacy. Your group of role players doesn't do that, because you're considerate and know it's rude, but not everyone out there is as thoughtful as you. Trolling in the guise of RPing, or RPing stupidly, has a very thin line.

You should have regaled that ice mage with a story of the legendary summoner Rydia, who overcame her fear and hatred of fire for the good of her traveling companions.

I like to go into dungeons naked and slow walk to each room.

I never attack, either. Gale is a pacifist.

Best (worst?) ever I had seen was in WoW before loot rules and such. Raid member ninja'd all the loot off Onyxia and said he was RPing a thief. Then hearthstone'd out and quit their guild. Was simultaneously funny and horrible at the same time (even ninja'd the items he couldn't use, his class: Rogue.)

Hence why I put "Super-RP'ers" in the title instead of just "RP'ers." I guess "trolling" would've been a better word to chose, but I was caught up with the fact with the response of "I'm RP'ing as..." or "But I'm RP'ing... and still doing x, y, and z" despite not actually caring about the time of the other members of the duty finder party. I completely understand that not all RP'ers do this, but those select few who I've encountered was less then pleasant.

It happened to a friend, then it happened to me twice within the same week. I'm not here to belittle or berate those select individuals who made poor choices which is why I left out names, but if people don't want to believe what they read then so be it. I will say it is very rare and this doesn't happen often, but it happened to me TWICE! I just decided to put a spin and be playful about it rather than be a complete jerk since I'm not here to complain but to share my experience and how I'm literally baffled by it. I guess you could say its a PSA, but essentially since this is a MMORPG, please be considerate of other people in your party. This game isn't a single player game. It's a Massive Multiplayer Online Roleplaying Game. A MMORPG.
