Hummingways - The best choice for the next playable race

Sorry OP, but in my opinion hummingways would be kind of lame. I would prefer a beast race which doesn't resemble a little girl's first pet (i.e. bunny, hamster, guinea pig, kitten or lapdog). Ach well, it's a Japanese game so expecting anything other than cute would be futile.

Unfortunately, you (and I) are in the minority. The numbers have spoken, and they want Miqo'te/Hyur/Au Ra analogues (though the Au Ra males are a very strange outlier considering the most popular males are Hyur Midlander and Miqo'te).

For whatever reason Square Enix wants to pander to what most people find appealing, and so pandering is what you're going to get. Sorry, dudes.

- Burmecians and Cleyrans from IX
- Garif from XII
- Hummingways
- Hypello from X
- Lilties from Crystal Chronicles
- Moogles from XII and Tactics series

Exactly. We will inevitably get something cute. At least with Hummingways we can get a race that looks less human than mi'qote and Au Ra. Sure, it is a compromise, but that makes is the best choice. Nobody is left completely unsatisfied.

Hummingway would please the players who love small cute things like lalafells and moogles, so I suppose it would add variety on that end of the spectrum. The other end (tall, muscular, not as doll-like females) only has roegadyn at the moment so there is room for variety on that end too. No matter what kind of race they bring out next, some people are definitely going to be left unsatisfied. However, if they keep catering to only one type of player over and over while ignoring the other, there is good reason for complaint.

Agreed, but big fierce and inhuman races would be too much like beast tribes. I would welcome a werewolf race, and I would welcome a vampire race even more, but that likely won'

Agreed, but big fierce and inhuman races would be too much like beast tribes. I would welcome a werewolf race, and I would welcome a vampire race even more, but that likely won't happen. FF XI survived for 10 years with only the original five races so I fear we won't get many new ones. We know that the japanese player base prefers cute races. Most of the criticism against Au Ra is that they aren't different enough from current races. That is why I decided on Hummingways as a compromise.

I could see maybe Dwarfes added as a very human looking, but tough race. The Cait Sith also exist in my head as a new race with the Ixali/Amalja skeleton, huge fangs and full body hair but I don't think players would accept them. Another idea of mine would be scaled humanoids with antlers, but NPCs wouldn't accept them.

I'd love to have the Hummingways as playable race! Even though I am an Au Ra right now, I love small races!

Well, I would argue female Highlanders are pretty far in that end of the spectrum as well.

I personally would have really liked something akin to the female Iksar from EQ2 (yes, specifically them and not the males) as I feel like they fit that 'cute' and 'bestial' yet also 'fierce' mold quite well, but we'll never, ever get anything that inhuman as playable in a Japanese-developed game. Ever. Not happening. Never ever. Seriously, if you can ever point to a single Japanese game where such a thing is even possible, I would be utterly shocked (and unfortunately it would likely be an exception that proves the rule).

The closest we'll ever get is something that is both cute and visibly not-human. Hence this thread. Personally, I'd really like to see a race that fills the niche lying somewhere in-between Lalafell and Miqo'te (and please give them actual anatomy and not popoto-anatomy like Lalafell).

I personally would like to see Viera, the concept art looks promising.

Supposedly, the reason they didn't continue with the Viera was that there were some fans were worried that they were a one-gender race (which they are not) or that the males and females didn't get along. :B

If you just look at the available races, it's apparent that they're clearly missing a "fiercer" or more "bestial" race. There are plenty of cute things already, it's proper to at least have one for those of us wanting it. The Roegadyn don't really address it, something more along the lines of Taurens, Trolls, Worgen or even the Undead from WoW. Just being a big red/blue human isn't interesting. After that I don't really care how many furry blobs they add into the game. Say what you want about WoW but Blizzard at least understands the concept of having something for everyone. At the moment there are some people left in the ditch.

But lets at least have something a bit more different than "a human with cat ears" or a "human with horns".

Why do you have such an impression? That's like saying normal women are "big and fierce". Their height ranges from 173cm to 187cm, well within the normal height ranges of a western woman. Regarding their physiques they're just in average fit shape. Um. I guess I have a different idea of what qualifies as 'big and fierce'.

For the record, they can be built like MMA fighters, and I would consider those women to be 'big and fierce'. Especially next to Hyur Midlanders, femMiqo'te, and femRa (and Lalafell, but I shouldn't need to mention them). They also have some of the sharpest facial features available to female characters, which is one of the reasons I never rolled one (the other being that I don't want my character to be... that tall, heh).

If my perspective seems skewed, consider that the grand majority of players will roll female characters in the 149-160cm range, with many never even approaching the realm of the 173cm+ range. See this chart from a survey of PSO2 characters for an illustrative example. Thus, by this standard female Highlanders are definitely in the realm of 'big and fierce' when compared to their counterparts in every race except Roegadyn.

Unfortunately, this chart is also a great example of why female Au Ra are so dissimilar to their male counterparts - they just wouldn't be anywhere near as often played. They'd be stuck in the realm of Roegadyn as far as popularity goes, and obviously, Square Enix has found that it is simply not worth the monetary investment.

All that being said, I would agree that a more bestial race would fill a niche that neither Roegadyn nor Highlanders currently occupy. It's just that none of the metrics available to SE indicate that such a race would be popular, and so here we are.

Also, I don't really understand this attitude of everything having to follow whats most popular. When adding races, traditionally MMO's or otherwise, rather than catering to the same group of people gaming companies have attempted to add in races for different types of audiences. It's not about popularity of the race itself it's about expanding the audience to increase the overall player base, rather than pumping out races that are similar to each other. The obvious example being WoW, where each added race has been an attempt to target a different niche.

The problem with that poll is that...Lets hear it! Viera didn't win, it was a race similar to Miqo'te and Viera. It was never supposed to mean Viera; however, everyone took it that way and completely screwed the poll due to the bias.

If you took the opportunity to notice, none of the other options has an already established race that we can visually know already. How would a wolfman, gnoll, lizardman look like? That we can only picture in our imaginations. However, we do know what a Viera looks like. That, in itself is an unfair advantage. Regardless, my opinion on this race is. I personally wouldn't want it. I've thought hard to see it as a form of compromise; however, this game is riddled with to many cute things already. I've never thought I'd even say this, but I personally don't want anymore cute races added in the game. I rather them focus on development if they aren't going to make a more beastmen race playable (which would be an interesting addition not only appearance but story-wise to the game.) Yes, I'm a bit crabby. In WoW I had a ton of variety to choose from, TERA the Amani, Wildstar the Draken, Archeage the Ferres, etc. Anyway, time for this ol' man to take his chill pills. lol

I think a better idea would be for SE to neither make a race based on popularity or on surveys. Just create something that isn't already available (we can already create a fake Viera as a female. Works best if you're a Hyur or Roegadyn, though).

At this point, if it's such an issue to develop a race with normal tough looking people, I wish they'd just make it so you could make some of the other cutesy demi-beast races tougher and scarier looking, like fur patches and maybe a "Mithra" nose option for the Miqo'te and a "more" scale options and the ability to make the girls just as large as the guys. It's not a perfect solution, but it's better than what we've got, it's less resource intensive than making an entire new race, and it shows that at least SE's would at least be trying a bit harder to please this other demographic who wants tougher, more beast-like (As it's inline with "fierce" fairly frequently). Like you're telling me there's not ONE Xaela tribe that developed thicker, more covering scales or managed to somehow find out a way to get their girls as tall and tough looking as men? The Xaela do some bizarre stuff and have done quite a few things to modify their regular biology either on purpose (Lung capacity, being able to sustain themselves on their own bodily fluids, and the height of men) or accidentally (Getting more rustic skin tone,

Hey, don't look at me. Yoshida's the one pushing the game in that direction. I personally would have greatly preferred the Au Ra be far more bestial - at the very least having full-body scales instead of these weird tacked-on cosplay patches. But that ain't what we got, and that ain't what we're getting anytime soon.

At this point I'd be happy just to see the halfbreeds become a playable option. Better than another Au Ra disappointment, anyway.

I'm not saying this to be mean, but, well, the polls speak for themselves. Big and powerful women are seen as 'manly' and 'unattractive' in the eyes of the many (and by 'the many' I really mean 'the 95%'; that's how small a minority you guys are). Feminine guys probably have a much easier time of it, which is weirdly sexist if you think about it, but I'd say it's more likely for you to get that than it is for you to get big, burly women.

Even in the instance you have a race designed to cater to that niche, the women end up more sexed up than 'fierce' and 'powerful'. That's just the way the cookie crumbles.

Eh, Roegadyn are already unpopular, I don't get why they have to bother sexing them up at all at that point, or at least if "Make them as big as the guys" do "Give us the option to make them as big as the guys". Let's be honest, more options isn't a bad thing, if they're not going to make a specific race to cater to the demographic, they should at least try to make the new (And maybe old) races to help work into that demographic.

I am 100% in agreement with you. The Au Ra guys in particular made me scratch my head as it utterly reeked of hypocrisy, though I changed my tune a little bit upon learning that they effectively look like Jojo's Bizarre Adventure characters and the reference became more clear (but I'm still not excusing them for being so bloody inconsistent).

I would love a more bestial race, but you know what else I'd love even more? ANOTHER FRICKING SHORT RACE. Why does everyone have to be so tall?! And they literally keep getting taller! Make something smaller! Small does NOT always equal 'cute'. I prefer shorter races in Final fantasy games, and while I do love lalafell, I'd drop it in a heartbeat for something a bit more unique that wasn't too much taller. Playing lalafell/tarutaru since day 1, and trying to play anything taller is like going from normal to playing with half a camera. It literally throws me off so badly, I cant stand it.

I will continue to tout that my favourite bestial playable race, in the games I have experienced, is Charr. In this game however, I don't see them going as far as the Charr do in terms of looks, presence and overall build (they run on all fours as well when weapons are sheathed) for both genders. I understand them wanting to stick with more humanoid builds for reasons previously stated, but perhaps they can stretch the limit of designs and create a truly intimidating and bestial race while keeping them roughly humanoid in stature in the future.

It's an uphill battle, but it's a responsibility sorta deal, as we can't fault SE until we let them know we're a demographic in the audience as well (One that they're at least willing to throw a bone too occasional, eg Roegadyn women). It's not fun, nor is it easy, but it's something you gotta do, heck we might actually get a few bones thrown in our direction if we keep it up. If you're not at least willing to talk about it frequently (Which is completely fine!), just showing up and going "I like this idea" and liking those posts that support it is fine enough.

I think the problem was that they pretty much had the Au Ra design decided at some point before 2.2 came out. Fan feedback wasn't a possible option :/

See, it was settled by 2.2 (There's an interview with Yoshi-P stating that), but that doesn't mean adjustments and additions weren't out of the question as well. Didn't SE state that one of the LAST things they were working on were the Au Ra models as well? I remember them saying something akin to like "We worked hard and managed to finish nearly all things for the Au Ra for the benchmark!" Then something about how it was one of the last things they were doing before launch. It just seems odd that they had everything finalized design wise by 2.2 (Something that happened over a year ago), and they didn't reveal the race right then (Even though, currently, they have very little to do with Ishgard or the story) and open themselves to consumer feedback.

Well, hopefully we don't go to the moon just yet, we've got plenty of problems in Eorzea (And Hydaelyn in general as well) to still address.

Interesting Idea, Basically the Precursor to Moogles in the original games.
I would be up for another small race for certain. Maybe a cross between the Hummingways (I think another name may be better) and the Moogles from the Ivalice based games like FFXII?

I'm all about viera. If this was only about rabbit ears, there's a pretty popular prize at The Golden Saucer that caters to this. The viera already have an established lore and that, may be the reason for the demand, not simply their looks or Fran ( though, she probably helps ).

Their ears might make you count them for ' cute ' but if you knew anything about them, you'd might rethink your assumptions. They're secluded warriors with a kinship with nature first and foremost. It's always so strange how people gloss this over. This has kind of been covered with Elezen ( Duskwights in particular ) , however.

Any and all nods to Ivalice are 110% alright with me. I really do hope they're implemented someday. The other Ivalice races can come too, no worries.

I don't understand how this could be considered a beast race... T_T

(Took me less than 5 minutes on MS Paint. That's how human they are. The removed parts, nails and ears, are already available as glamour accessories. All we need is shoes with claws for the full Viera look <_<)

Yes, I still disagree with you about Highlanders, but concerning how small a minority we're talking about here, where are you pulling these statistics from? In WoW, the Undead, Taurens, Orcs, Trolls, Worgen and Draenei collectively make up almost 50% of the playerbase.
An audience that is virtually untapped by the current race selection.
