It's really funny how jumping seems to be as hotly debated a topic on these boards as abortion is in other "forums".
I see a log/rock/obstacle in my path. I want to make my character jump over it. I feel like jumping down (or off) a hillside or even cliff, I want to take the plunge. It's freedom of mobility and it's a very simple concept to grasp. Why in the world do I care if my jumping has a context or not?
They said jumping will have an additional use that is cancelling spells, so I doubt they will restrict it, sorry. Also, I have played many mmos and have never once seen a group of afk bots spamming jump to stay online. All of these rediculous extremes people use to argue against jumping are hilarious, though. So thanks for the laughs.
Jumping would be a nice feature to have as it is extremely frustrating having to run a long distance simply due to a small ledge on the map.
Also, jumping has been implemented in MMO's far earlier than WoW, so the "WoW-clone" argument is pointless to make (i.e. Asheron's Call).
I think this is a good thread... and i see some people are ignoring something.... have you guys forget Imperials have airships?, havent you ever imagined maybe there will be instances or even whole maps that will require you to jump platforms, bridges or why not?, maybe even from airship to airship?, i know this not an action RPG game but hell, why SE cant introuce that? dont they keep tellin us they want make the best MORPG ? why not innovate and do something most MOrPGS dont have? and i know, Yoshi said the jump wont be battle related bah blah blah.... maybe we should complain instead we want a useful Jump instead just a "jump around nonsenseless and happily all girlish", i want to believe if we wanted that it would be an emotion not an actual action.
I like how people bicker about jumping in a game, when, in all likeliness, less than 10% of them have jumped in real life.
Some of you are in complete denial. It's entertaining.
Even when it is said that it is coming and it'll be a free roam jump. Also, the zones are being reworked. What makes you think that it won't be redesigned for free roam jump in mind?
I completely agree with the OP!
Did they not already confirm you will be able to use jump to cancel the casting of an ability? This implies to me it is something you will be able to do whenever you want and will not be context sensitive like FF XIII.
It will be a free roaming jump and you will have to learn to live with it. :o
If only it could be like http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fFgGBHH6Rr4 wouldn't need a chocobo then.
I Enjoyed The "Wrong Way" More..... itll still look like your character is doing the "right way" in this game but i dont have to be in an activation zone to do it....
People are saying that a lack of a jump feature ruins immersion?!?!? They have no idea what they are talking about. ADDING a jump feature DETRACTS from immersion.
Need an explanation? A person loaded down in full plate will not be making a 2 ft vertical leap. Period. If they do they will fatigue out so fast that they can't move in their armor.
The reason a jump feature is requested is to create difficulty in targetting your opponent in upcoming PvP. That's it...plain and simple.
There, I said it if nobody else would.
I understand that FFXIV wants AND NEEDS to pool players from WoW, but if the only way they can do that is by making this game WoW, then they have already lost. Those same PvP'ers are never happy with WoW PvP unless the parameters favor them. If any of you have ever played WoW, just check chat after any major patch and watch the whining "X" class is way OP!!!. They need to nerf "Y" class because I can't beat them using the same old straegy I have always used .
People don't learn to play WoW, WoW spoon feeds them.
Are you sure we can't stop it? Cuase you know what jump leads to... Half assed platforming.
Hopefully they use jump as a jumping platform to greater things, i.e., jumping platforms.
I want to have the freedom to jump anytime anywhere. The game is rigid as is and I welcome any change to make it feel more responsive!
I haven't read the entire thread, so forgive me if this was mentioned already but... Didn't a dev post say that jump would be used to interrupt casts as well? That would imply we could freely jump whenever we wanted, and not like how FFXIII was.
Personally, I don't care either way as long as the animation is smooth and looks nice. I think being worried about people making bots that jump 24/7 is a little silly.
Where are all these pro jumping people coming from? It's days like these where I actually don't feel like clawing my own face off in frustration/bewilderment at the state of FFXIV playerbase.
The only thing good about that Final Fantasy XIII video was the slick and responsive UI.
Free jumping is awesome. Retards jumping off bridges to their deaths is awesome. A girl auto jumping 30 feet into the air in the most unrealistic away possible is awful.
It's a fantasy game and many laws of our REAL WORLD DO NOT APPLY. It basically invalidates everything you've typed in that second paragraph. If you can't discern that there are certain things that have been removed, ignored, or included for creativity then you got an issue I reckon.
Yeah I don't get why people are using FFXIII as an example of good jumping. Lightning jumps around 20 feet into the air, while doing flips, easily landing on platforms and jumping the same height again within a second. Yeah... somehow that's more acceptable than free jumping.
Sorry to point this out so directly, but the "Wrong" version is actually more strategically involving than the "Right" version, and has infinitely more promise because of it. The reasoning for this boils down to the simple fact that, while both methods have a "contextual" use, the former's is defined dynamically by the player whereas the latter's is defined statically by the game. Not only does the former method fulfill the function of the latter (i.e. interacting with the world), but it can also help define the actual gameplay.
Quite honestly, the only reason that the "Wrong" version is being interpreted as a childish implementation is because there is no Fatigue (or dare I say 'Stamina') function in place to prevent the player from repetitively jumping. Of course with Stamina gone, I really don't have much hope for the feature altogether.
I'm all for free-jumping, even if it serves no tactical purpose (as in certain boss battles in WoW, overcoming environmental elements, etc.). If nothing else, it adds a little life to the game. I don't honestly care if someone else wants to jump around randomly when they're bored. Barring that, they'd be /emoting. Barring THAT, they'd be running around in circles wearing bathing suits and/or egg helmets. The list could go on. Would anyone really rather they removed all those things because there is potential for them to annoy people who won't simply look away and do their own thing? The last thing we need is a more lifeless game.
100% with the op. Free form jump kills the life like animations we have. Should completely be situational. Does anyone really want to see hundreds of lala's and miquote's bouncing around like tennis balls non stop just because they can?
If I remember correctly, Lightning and her friends jump off the highway at the beginning chapter and jump off the airship when they return to Cocoon
The reality is this is a fantasy game. Take your realism and shove it as far as I'm concerned. I wasn't aware in the real world people ride around on giant chickens(and let's be honest, they could have come up with something a bit more 'epic' in feel than big bird as a mount).
If they put jump in the game i need to be able jump all day all the time if they don't im cool with that too.
@OP You're nuts, that first video is amazing. Stuff like that is what's really exciting about computer games. Players organizing and being able to do something completely unusual.. that's part of what makes people enjoy the game in that video. We could use some of that around here. Don't be such an old scrooge.
