You know the reason why males are so long :) I bet "it" is enjoying,,, a lot!
Their resting face does seem scowl-y. I mostly like Au Ra but I predict I will be going back to Duskwight fairly soon.
Mine looks pretty sad compared to angry >.<

When the lore pans out, it would be hilarious if the Au Ra are from a matriarchal society. Remember Mithra from FFXI? The females were the fighters that went out hunting while the men stayed at home and took care of the family and land (basically like a lioness and a lion of the pride do in the wild). So even though the men are huge, maybe it's just like the lion's mane/peacock's plumes and is more for show to get the females attention (Like, hey look at me!).
I'm not saying that's how it is. Just saying it would be a bit reversed how people see it and because of that it would be funny. But come to think of it.... Yugiri was the first one we met...and is a fighter.... :P
What!?, you talking to me!?

The smiles don't look bad at least, if you can catch one smiling
Kathryn, its fine and dandy if you think other people are being silly, as it is your OPINION, and you are allowed to have that, just as the people who don't like the way the au ra look, is their opinion too. But to come on to here and post as you did in such a manner, is kind of rude, and almost has a "higher than thou" tinge to it. If you dont' like reading, then by all means, don't look at the forums anymore, but did it really warrant a full blown announcement while also trying to demean people for not being happy?
Actually some tribes of Xaela are in fact matriarchal ;) http://ffxiv.consolegameswiki.com/wiki/Xaela
Tribes of note specifically:
Quote:
Bayaqud:A tribe of the steppe’s western edges. Women from the Bayaqud tribe will traditionally take several husbands, as did the tribe's founding matron 2000 years ago.
Borlaaq: A tribe of all women. While breeding with men from other tribes is allowed, if a male is born into the tribe, he is given up within a year of birth.
Dazkar: Household duties such as cooking, cleaning, and childrearing are handled by the males of the Dazkar who, other than when on the move, rarely ever leave their family's yurts. Female Dazkar are tasked with hunting, and are known across the steppe as being some of the most accurate archers in the realm.

Yes, looking at exactly what you thought.
Im switching from Male to Female.. The Angry face and the Running animation realy anoys me. It looks like he is running full speed but being hold back. ... bugs me to the point that i will change.. :(
This is exactly why I ended up keeping my femroe, despite how awesome it would be to be a demoness. I don't know why SE insists on these cute little monster girls, but this whole xpac in general is so male-centric as it is I don't think we can ever hope for equal representation at all, much less in our avatars.
Simply put, they made it that way because that's what people want to play. If you look at the distribution before Au Ra, female Roegadyn were one of the least played character race/gender combinations and female Miqo'te (and female Hyur for that matter) was one of the most common. SE came to the conclusion that large buff women aren't what the playerbase in general wants and tiny cute waifu material is. It has nothing to do with being "male-centric". There are plenty of females that like having a small cute female avatar. I have to admit I was a little disappointed in the "cute monster girl" Au Ra, but that doesn't mean that I'm going to go all tumblr social justice on the place.
Man, those male Au ra look so cute and small right? Not like this is a thread started because someone thought they look so grumpy and mean all the time. You don't solve the problem or "no one plays the one with big and tough girl race" with adding more cute and small girls, if anything is just makes the problem worse. Besides by "male centric" I think they meant that the men of the new race are far more unique than the girls. The men have more scales (absolutely 0 scales on the girls back iirc), larger horns, a more unique height range (bridging the gap between Elezen and roegadyn men as opposed to the girls 1 inch shorter than the Miqo'te), more unique body shape (the massive shoulders with the thin waist and thicker hips and thighs), the scales help shape the face more on the men (looking specifically at the chin crests) while on the girls most facial scales are removable, et cetera.
Legit! This is my biggest gripe wih my Au Ra.
Running animation is herp derp ert berst.
I didn' care fo the hair selections. I would kill for my Roegadn's fohawk but it's simply not an option.
I don't like the standing still default pose, feet together, like a NIN. my roe War didn't stand like that. /changepose is good though, which I would be using anyway so not a big deal.
I actually don't mind the running animation for males, I quite like it. I also like their sprint. >.> To each their own of course. ^_^ Not too big on their default standing pose though, but we are lucky to be able to change that.
It's why I hide my face....ain't nobody got time to see my scowl.
I'm predicting male Au Ra population being below the female Roe in the long run.
That's what Roes and Highlanders are around for and what makes them unique! ;)
Yet the two aren't played as much as other races, I wonder why.
I love the races when someone makes one that isn't a carbon copy well though. :p
In all seriousness though in reply to the female Au Ra height, we're short but not that short.
This is me between two miqo'te of two different heights, the one to the left is in a different pose stance however we're both around the same height and I am max Au Ra female height. :)
Though our height vs the male height is differed greatly, I think the majority of females we have around looks freakishly small in comparison unless they are Highlander/Roe.
The why on earth would SE dare dilute the unique-ness of the Miqo'te and midlander! That's what makes them unique you know ; P
I don't know, apparently men Au Ra kneel down to hug the girls, at that point it's way to tall. If it weren't for the fact that Miqo'te (second most popular race) weren't only an inch taller than the Auri girls, then I'm sure you'd feel a lot shorter.
They should've made the massive height split between the Xaela and Raen imho, not the sexes.
You know, my first instinct when I started his game was to create a femroe. And then I realized that I could, with the Elezen, create a male character that is actually handsome, for once, instead of being limited to "badass" which usually just means 47 variants of angry square faces with buzzcuts. So then for a while I was seriously torn - do I "represent" as a woman, or do I make a character that I just love to look at? And then I discovered that you could dress the men as skimpily as the women, and the rest is history... XD
That being said, if the Au Ra women had been tall and fierce like the men instead of small and dainty I would have been one now.
@Samcaesar; I had a longer reply for you but... this thread isn't about that it's about male Au Ra's! :p Though I will say that I was formerly a female lalafell at the shortest height so I do know a thing or two about height difference and it's not that big of one compared to every other female for girl Au Ra trust me on this and I think SE made the better choice in making Au Ra unique but not too unique by adding a bunch of exclusive options/features vs every other race, but opinions, opinions.
Anyways, to the topic thread... they don't all really seem angry to me unless they are created towards that look with upset eyebrows and stuff, some just seem capable or really confident. Either way, I wouldn't mind a capable looking guy around me ready to kick some butt in a world with monsters and the like! :o
It does seem like about 90% of the combinations do make a permanently angry Male Au Ra but it is possible to make one without the resting bitch face.
Also I noticed something interesting in the lore of the Raen Au Ra
"Families of the warrior class (and generally the ruling class) are the only people “allowed” surnames in Doma..." From here
which seems to suggest that the Raen are actually matriarchal, and that the idea behind the gender differences between the Au Ra is that the women are the brains while the men are the brawn.
As for the complaints about the womens stature and look then I say the same thing as other posters have, SE is just conforming to what people like prefer. Just look at how common Lalas and Fem Miqo'te are compared to how rare Highlanders and Roe are in general. The fan base favors the small "cutesy" look over the rough "cool" look.
How'd you get that the Raen are possibly matriarchal from the naming conventions? As far as I understood it, surnames used by the worker class aren't strictly forbidden, though they're also not recognized as actual surnames by the nobility. There's nothing about women somehow being more suited for positions of power in there. :o
And assuming that the inspiration for the naming conventions (the Edo period) extend to Doman culture as well, Auri women would be the brains behind a family only in unusual circumstances. Of course, that's a huge assumption on my part. :p Wtb more Doman culture!
