Seeing that the latency to NA servers are the same as to EU "recommended" servers, what prevented you from joining an EU "recommended" server from the start? What were the reasons and would be those reasons null if the EU servers are in europe?

It doesn't take much brain power to think that if things were going to change and physical servers were to be created in the EU, they'd more likely move the "server(s) for EU people" in this new datacenter.
Knowing that, better be safe than sorry and move to said server when given the chance, even if the actual physical server is not in EU yet.
And, please, don't make it sounds like nobody ever expected that kind of things to change... with a MMO.
well when i started playing XIV there was no such recommendations, as i started in the beta of FFXIV, i made relations with ppl there from all over the world.
And if you played FFXIV at its launch you would know that the datacenter back in 1.0 was in japan, and that upon the failure of said launch. A while after those worlds got merged. And with the announcement of ARR coming out with regional servers there was excitment until it was disclosed just before launch that there would be no EU server/datacenter. So since both NA and EU would be on the same datacenter in NA. PPL choose to play with ppl they had allready made relations with.
In every MMO that have dedicated servers in both NA and EU, you choice the area that you live in, or are closest to. If you buy FFXIV, and don't really bother with what world you play on... Why on earth would an EU player not choose the ones clearly stating "EU recommended"? and why would a NA player go to a server that is mainly meant for EU?
Everyone keep saying it's EU recommended because of the time zone... and yes, that's part of it, but anyone should be able to figure out that if there ever came a dedicated EU server, it would be for those EU recommended worlds.
You can make that decision if you like, but you can't then later complain about it.
It takes alot of mental gymnastics to think as such, considering just before the launch of ARR it was disclosed that EU/NA would be the same datacenter in NA. And after the release and the EU community complained about the latency issues, the response was that there was no problem by all the whiteknights and etc.
But SE has acknowledged that there is an issue and they are working on getting and EU datacenter "please look forward too it", until such time is near that they will acctually provide any information as too when we will get this long awaited datacenter. There is no practical reason to abandon the relations you have only to idle on another world located in NA.
Lets talk when there is acctually an EU SERVER located inside EUROPE with a date and specifics, rather then a lofty promise that was broken only to be ignored then promised again.
Yes lets compare it to MMO's that provide regional servers when the games are launched that is just like FFXIV ARR. Oh wait i forgot, its not the same.
Dedicated regional servers where promised back in FFXIV when they where talking about the relaunch, on launch we didnt get an EU one and it was said we wherent getting one ever!. And ive been on a server since 1.0, not everyone started in 2.0, if you have any concept of what friends are thats who most ppl remained with on an all around NA datacenter where latency on any world was just as bad for EU.
And an NA player would go to a EU timezone recommended world, because they themselves are active during that hour and possibly they have european friends. Just because you personaly would never consider it doesnt mean others wouldnt. Its called a broader perspective then that of your own.
Since v1 was a complete disaster and they had to rush like crazy to get 2.0 on the rails, it's very easy to think of why they only had two datacenters, one in Japan, one in Canada.
They had absolutly no idea if whether or not 2.0 was going to be successful.
So yes, I'll still say that from a player perspective it was very easy to anticipate how the situation could evolve from there. The chance of getting EU servers later on was high enough to consider a free transfer.
People just saw more value in the relations they had with NA people. That's their choice. Some people choose the other option and took the free transfer because playing on a same timezone was better for them and the chance of getting EU servers was appealing.
... But now the people who took the first option are regretting it and want another free "FC transfer" with no restriction just to get a better ping? Screw all these "relations" you made, right?
Come on...
Besides, there's actually a chance to see a new free transfer campaign. But asking for the "hey, can we transfer our 800+ FC with all the benefits plz?" is just absurd.
Just because a group claims a server doesnt make it so. Sargatanas was not EU server, and what about the massive amount of NA players from the merge? They are screwed because a couple ppl claimed it as EU.. sure. It being an unofficial Eu server is news to me anyway. Its like assuming every person on balmung is there by choice and loves ERP.
You're implying that they wouldnt move to the EU datacenter aswell. In case you're unaware there are several NA players that has a horrendous ping to Canada, and with the release of an EU datacenter some might even experience better ping or equal. So for now im not leaving anything behind, i would bring it with me.
And considering that the info was Regional datacenter for jp, na and eu on release of ARR, and that it went to JP and NA/EU just before release. Into there will not be an EU datacenter, and there is no issue. Moving further it is there is an issue we will work on an EU Datacenter. In all of this time lots of bagage has been created within the game by SE creation of FC etc, so if its a problem for them to move it. Its still a problem they have created.
But honestly it would have been better if the datacenter was in EU from the start, the NA dont mind latency its a non issue.
And considering everyone got free no restrictions move from FFXIV to ARR, wonder what the response would have been if the center had been in EU first. And then put restrictions on the NA moving from EU to NA.
You see the issue is that EU never got their fresh start with ARR within their region, only JP and NA. And when EU do get their own region, it should be the same deal as it was going from FFXIV to ARR. FC wasnt a thing back then, but thats an issue created by SE and solved by SE.

This is a French article that contains a Yoshi-P interview.
Put this topic to bed.Quote:
The first question concerns the servers in Europe and Yoshi-P reply that the data will be copied from Chaos to the European data center. Even though it will take 2-3 days everyone can play afterwards.

It would be great if we could get a community rep to tell us, the EU players currently playing on NA datacenters, how the server transfers will work when the current EU datacenters are moved to Europe, when this will happen, and is there a plan to implement a FC transfer system.
I hope that EU servers will have players that know how to communicate in English. I've had bad experience on Lich because everyone was talking/writing in French, German, Spanish and refused to speak in English. Even when I went into Duty Finder, it was horrible. This is why I am on a NA server instead of a EU server, if it may one day change -> I would consider transferring. The level of skilled EU players were not on par with NA servers either.
Pretty sure the reason that the EU data center was set up in Montreal with no plans to give them a home in Europe was because, at the time, SE was daring to hope they might get half a million players world wide. They already needed to cover the equipment and hosting fees for two locations, planning for each one to hold between 200K-300K players.
When the game exploded in popularity, they finally had the justification - and the money - to open an EU data center actually located in Europe.
We now know that the servers will be moved to Europe mid-October, which is under 2 months away from now. It would be great if the community reps could give us some info about if there will be server transfer campaign, or any new server transfer options available at the time. I'm sure many EU Free Companies and individual players on NA servers would like to hear more about this so they can plan their transfers.
If there happens to be an EU FC on Midgardsormr hit me up so if this thing does come about in time Id like to tag along XD
