Favourite City/Faction and why?

I can't flat out choose one over the other as a whole. From favourite to least in various aspects:

Layout - Ul'dah, Limsa Lominsa, Gridania
Citezenry - Limsa Lominsa, Gridania, Ul'dah
Day music - Limsa Lominsa, Ul'dah, Gridania
Night music - Ul'dah, Gridania, Limsa Lominsa
Surrounding areas - Shroud, Thanalan, La Noscea

Truth be told, if they put in large city amenities there, I would never leave Camp Dragonhead.

Limonsa consists of pirates who may or may not have sworn off piracy and are honest people.

Ul'dah is corrupt with greed and power, to the that their goddamn motto is "For coin and country!" who really can't even be assed to help out refugees because "money is their greatest asset" ...Then there's 2.55.

Gridania has no power struggle, and at worse they are xenophobic to outsiders.


...My decision is clear. The Ishgardians definitely live a much better life off dragon slaying, laughing off people who ask them for aid, sending request for aid, and getting killed by dragons by standing in front of their breath attacks.

Theyre leaders of their own faction... getting involved in something like that, particularly attacking those in power (or those who could assume power in the near future) isnt something they need to get involved in. Could easily lead to war. I was more disappointed by the Scions and my own character for just kinda standing there with their mouth hanging open like "OMG" while things just fell apart.

Still the best of the very few actually entertaining parts of the story so far...

Gridania, because kan e senna, and the Dow guilds.

I've always been fairly partial to Gridania because of the foresty area. And I know it wasn't an option, but I love Coerthas. I <3 snowy areas. ^_^

Not that there was anything we or the Scions could do even anyway,

given the fact that we were actually unarmed during that scene - presumably the Lady-in-Waiting relieved us of our weapons when we entered the Sultana's chamber for 'security reasons', a big red flag that something was wrong (as there were plenty of times in the past where we met with Nanamo while still armed). They needed us unarmed in order for the conspiracy to work.

Hence once the deed was done the player's character could easily be arrested, meaning that they then spend the majority of time in that scene either laying on the floor powerless with their hands bound behind them, or faced with no choice but to flee. The Scions likewise are completely surrounded by Brass Blades and Crystal Braves - they're totally outnumbered (this probably also explains how Raubahn ends up losing against Ilberd, even with only one arm - Ilberd being the dirty coward he is probably had to zerg-rush him with his troops).

What struck me as odd was more how once the player reunites with Alphinaud and is introduced to Vice Marshal Tarupin, they're suddenly armed again. Where did my Curtana and Holy Shield come from? I like to think Tarupin recovered the player's weapon and returned it to them, but nothing is confirmed.

Ah well, despite the 'because' reasons, that still was one hell of a way to send the 2.X story off into Heavensward. But anyway, I've derailed the thread topic again so that's enough for me. :D

Gridania is still my choice of favourite city, although I admit I consider Enki to have little more than a token allegiance to the Order of the Twin Adder, as she is an adventurer at heart and not a soldier - but she is still fiercely supportive of Gridania and the protection of the forest and all who dwell within, spoken or elemental.

Gridania, Twin Adders, the Twelveswood...

I like Gridania because of A) my race; B) my class/job; and C) my leader, so precious, so huggable.

I like Twin Adders because, for one, that's a really badass name.

And lastly, just imagine a sunny, rolling meadow, and a forest in the distance... you're walking along, and suddenly, a Lalafell pops up over the hill. S/he is looking at you. *Blink* *Blink-Blink*

i like grid because its a relaxing atmosphere.

Gridania is my favorite for appearance reasons. Everything is just so pretty shrouded in forests
Limsa is my favorite for layout. The Main aethryte is steps away from a summoning bell and market boards. (Also a minor plus, Limsa's sunsets are GORGEOUS!)
Uldah is my favorite for main characters. I love Nanamo and Raubahn. (Nanamo's introduction in the main scenario if you started Ul'dahn really set the stage for 2.5's madness) But before that we had Neil, F'lahminn and a special little girl who lost her father (wont spoil it, go youtube the 1.X story). If you played 1.X you know why I love(d) these guys.

My favorite city state is easily Limsa. It's beautiful, has cheap easy access all across it's areas, (ships to everywhere for practically pennies), and as the OP said, has very welcoming and lively NPCs around. Every time you talk to a new one you're either going to enjoy a laugh, or feel like you're about to get into a good brawl that you could see yourself looking back on and laughing win or lose. In the other city states you don't get that from the NPCs as most either seem bored or simply have disdain for you because they can.....

As for the GC it also has to be the Malestrom. It's filled with said NPCs, so every quest related to it is enjoyable rather than bland as most of my interactions with the other GCs have been. When I got to the point in the story where you join a GC, I had honestly planned on joining the Twin Adder because that's what all the members of my FC were. Then you were tasked with going around and listening to all the speeches from the GC leaders. Kan-E-Senna's speech practically put me to sleep until Alphinaud spoke up, and Raubaun's was so generic and merchant oriented and money hungry, (which I now get plays well to Ul'dah), that at the time it actually made me somewhat hate the character. Then the Admiral's turn came up, and while not the most exciting, she was able to deliver a speech that could rouse all to action. After hearing her speech and realizing she was the only leader who could put fire into the hearts of even the most rugged of pirates, how could I not join the Maelstrom?

EDIT: In regards to my comment about "at the time it actually made me somewhat hate the character" I should clarify that that did of course change as I progressed the story and learned more about Raubaun. But as that was my first interaction with the character, my initial impressions of him are understandable......

For faction, I went with Maelstrom for my character because, well mostly because they started in Limsa so it seemed appropriate. But also I liked the red color scheme best. For region it'd have to be La Noscea > Thanalan > Shroud > Coerthas. I prefer coastal environs over landlocked ones, open landscapes over crowded ones, and warm climes over cold ones, so the latter two come across as kind of oppressive.

Back in 1.0 i chose to go to Gridania because of a few things. I wanted to start as an Archer, and the Archers Guild was located in Gridania. Next to that, it had the most appealing surroundings. So, that was a win-win situation for me.

What can i say… I like trees. I want to hug them…

Also, during the Main Story Quest, you had to select a Grand Company you wanted to join. And in order to decide which one would suit you best, you had to go to each city state and listen to the inspirational speeches of each Grand Company leader.

From each of the Leader, Kan-E-Senna was the only one i agreed with and wanted to follow her. She had the personality i could connect with.

For Shuu anyway. My legacy is all Gridanian though.
I just don't feel attachment to Ul'dah and the Flames tbh, and not because of 2.55 - it's always been so.

I Still have my certificate mounted on my wall that says I am Gridanian from 1.0! I shall be Gridanian and Gridanian I shall stay!

Ul'dah; the nation of lalafell, and the creation place of the most feared (and adorable) Primal in Eorzea's existence: Memenu Menu.

Limsa Lominsa. Because there's a Marketboard and a Summoning Bell right next to the spawn point.
With a glamour vendor directly across on the other side.

I prefer the Maelstrom faction too- I really don't see much difference between the 3 factions aside from their colors, but their Elite gear (from hunting) by far looks the best.

That and the daytime music kinda reminds me of How To Train Your Dragon.

When I first started playing I thought for sure it'd be Gridania. It's gorgeous, it has the archer's guild, and on the surface it has the fewest problems. But over time the layers get peeled back, and its problems bother me more than Limsa's or Ul'dah's partly because people acknowledge that they HAVE problems (in-universe, that is). But Gridania has a horrifyingly thorough culturally reinforced racism against anyone who isn't a wildwood or midlander, bows down to and fights to appease a power that doesn't care about them but is always framed as necessary for reasons that are never clarified (especially since La Noscea has no Elemental dictatorship and it's thriving naturally), and are subject to rule by a bunch of magical apparently immortal children. And then of course there's the insular cultural xenophobia that completely ignores how they desperately needed outside help to stay afloat after the calamity, particularly financially.

Limsa has its problems too, but that's mostly to do with freedom, and when freedom stretches into criminal activity and where the line gets drawn for which activities.

Ul'dah, though. The Syndicate, the Alacran, and the veritable army of skeezy merchants make for a place so full of corruption that a random civilian outright tells you that the brass blades are worse than the criminals in a lot of ways. But I still fell in love with Ul'Dah, despite actually not being that fond of desert levels in games generally. I really loved the good people that ARE there. People like Wymond, Momodi, Raubahn, or even Phillice. It became a place that I want to help, I want to make better BECAUSE it's so awful and corrupt in so many places. As someone else in this thread said, I love Ul'Dah like Batman loves Gotham.
