Oh boy...
Man you're funny. I don't even think you play this game.

Xi had underwater content :P At least...the entrance to Nyzul Isle was underwater. But I disagree with swimming. I would love to have underwater transportation/teleportation though...kind of like Nyzul Isle!! You just teleported down there in a room with a huge glass wall that allowed you to view under the sea. Some kind of underwater dungeon/ endgame like that would be amazing looking if they could bring the ocean view alive.
Nice idea, but thats expansion territory.
i loved swimming in WoW, Zelda, elder scrolls morrowind and oblivion. I'm loving it in two worlds 2. Also guys who said full plate gear is actuslly "heavy" There are styles that use light metals.
Those against it why? it makes sence for this game since it has an isle pirate theme. Plus there is a style of fishing that requires you to be under water.
If you guys want realism turn off names and walk every where. Simple fact that ffxiv night and day are about 6 hours long defeats that.'
I'm all for swimming in ffxiv they can open up Limsa Lominsa (sp?) by having sunken ships, under water spear fishing. They can also do what two worlds did by adding swimming but make heavy gear unable to swim and need special type of under water armor.
Amusingly, very few real pirates knew how to swim. In fact, REAL pirates REFUSED to learn to swim. Pirates were extremely superstitious people. Common belief was "Once the sea has tasted you, it will be back to claim you."
In other words, Pirates tried to avoid ever getting in water, and once they were in it, they just assume drown instead of live in fear of it happening again. Plus let's not forget that when ships sink, they drag you down, fueling superstition.
So yeah. Pirate theme actually argues AGAINST swimming factually.
to me one of those aesthetic things that means very little to the game. hey when they got everything else squared away, sure why not
Since my character based on FFX, I'm down!
You guys wanna know why theres swimming in WoW...?
It's totally a secret but I'll let you in on it!
You guys ready? This is gonna blow you away!!
....because theres stuff down there...
from what I saw in this thread, most ppl go against swimming because of some reason that is not related to swimming itself... If FFXIV gonna have swimming/underwater contents, that would be a FFXIV swimming/underwater content.
And I just dont understand the mentality to supress a discussion in a general discussion forum by posting a disscusion. Self defeating really. No one is focing the dev to do anything.
I think swimming is an appropriate thing to add to this MMO. In fact, all MMO's should have it, and yet I can't think of any mainstream ones that don't sides FFXI.
Yes, player's should be able to swim, down below and over and above. The problem is, SE didn't make the ocean big enough to swim from one island to another. It's all controlled by a fixed camera angle that moves the boat from one area to another. That's why there are loading screens when docking.
I think that if the player were to swim, it would add a third dimension to player involvement in the world of Eorzea, something I think this world is currently lacking.
Let's not forget that the ocean might actually be more vibrant than looking at the same tree over and over and over.....
Lus
wow... just wow. This is a fantasy game. When you think pirayes in a fantasy semce you think, under water caves filled with buried treasures. Sunken ships filled lost treasures.
Last I checked ffxiv wants called discovery channel 14 online
wasn't
(my keyboard is skrewy.)
sorry but taking a quote about pirates off of the discovery channel is stupid.
guys this is a fantasy game. It's in the flippin title.
Stop over dramatizing every aspect ppl want. These are video games.
Anyone using the immersion excuse better be role players who walk and not run, have names turned off. And "sleep" at night. Or i will scream you break immersion by not doing those.
some of the complaints ppl give for positive changes is getting really annoying. Alot of classes can benifit from swimming.
Bonecrafters, goldsmiths, fishers, botenists.
When I think of Pirates, I think of people with scurvy, that spend months at a time on a boat, and horde valuable items in their boat until they dock. Plus I think of the classic English ones who actually worked for the British government and robbed the Spanish. I also think of Paranoid pirates who are superstitious and don't like water. Which is most pirates, even a lot of non-romanticized pirates.
Anyway. Sure, maybe later on, but I know a lot of people here have said it sucks in WoW. I'm all for a lot of major over hauls in the game. But swimming? Jumping, sure. But Swimming? Ugh... I just do not wanna have to deal with diving to try and find some ??? Later at some time in the future, sure, but Only in special new zones designed for it for one. It's just not something I really care to have the Dev Team waste resources on for the next 6 months. As is though, this game is not made for 3D movement.
This feature would be so awesome! Imagine the possibilities. I dont understand why people would be against this and this would so go hand in hand with spear fishing. If people are not in favor then just dont participate, I mean seriously what harm could be done by adding more content. Yes it would mean they would have to expand but thats awesome. The more the merrier I say.
Ash the Destroyer-
7th Sun of the 4th Umbral Moon
This is a great idea.
I'm pretty sure that out of everyone that's posted in the entire English section of the forums, I'm the only one who has gone on record saying "I would like to see a playable aquatic race".
Yeah, it's Final Fantasy, and yeah, there have been subs, undersea trenches, facilities and even underwater sports in the FF series, so it isn't that big of a stretch to say it could be possible/awesome in FFXIV. I'd more than welcome it, but it has to make sense within the game. If they want to introduce undersea zones or content or stuff that fits, then do it.
I'm more afraid of having half-assed systems that feel awkward than having the systems themselves.
If we can have underwater content without actually swimming, then why bother with swimming? If say, an entire zone were underwater (like FFXI's Sea, technically speaking), maybe have a semblance of swimming, but not any substantive deviation in combat/animation to qualify it as swimming.
Either way, it shouldn't even be a drop of thought at this point... let's get some actual content, instead of what could very likely turn into a gimmick.
Wow this started just as a fun discussion but i'm really impressed by how many people are supportive of the idea of swimming and underwater content. Not only that but some great idea are being brought up.... keep it up guys!
To those against it.... all i see in your arguments is "ohh it's too cartoony", "it's copying WOW" (as if wow invented swimming...) or better yet... "it can't be done cuz its not already in the game" ... sure flying mounts were always in the game in WOW... Blizzard just wanted to keep it a secret for TBC expansion....
And yup we know this is expansion set stuff but it certainly is fun to talk about it and expansion take time to make so might as well start now! I even got a title for SE "leviathan's wrath" with swimming and loads of watery stuff :D
Underwater Content - Maybe if done right...
Swimming - No...
I'll just say... maybe.
I would not like to see anything like how Rift does it. It looks really cheesy and completely ruins any form of immersion I might even try to have.
The only reason I would support it is because I'm a Corsair at heart and wouldn't mind being able to go to an island area and swim from island to island. I would generally be against underwater combat... it's just too hard to do it well. Though if they got the physics right, then maybe.
But then again, I'm also against manual jumping. I would love to see an Auto-jump and even would enjoy seeing some well-done swimming though.
I think it would be really cool to have the option
I think so as well, whats the point of having a huge world to roam, only to be restricted from exploration. I wast to swim, and spearfish while I swim. I would love to see underwater quests.
They could easy add a underwater city which brigs swimming to the game and you can only swim there i would agree on it and love it.
Bump! who else is down for swimming and or underwater content in the future of course?
In FFXI you could get under the water in the dunes. It was a ps2 glitch. It was fun, you could even do it riding a chocobo. I would get so many /tell asking how the hell i got in the water. I liked pulling mobs from the beach down in the water and fighting them.
