How do you feel about the FFXI News?

WHAT this hasn't been locked yet! lol every thread about FFXI was locked.


Hearing the news made me happy I stopped playing in 2013. I started on PS2 and moved to Xbox, if I still played, I would be pretty pissed. I played FFXI for almost 10 years, that's crazy. But I was really surprised that they are dropping xbox service, PS2 that is long over due. If they dropped PS2 years ago the game could have been even better. At least they are going out with a bang.

I hope SE assigns some of the FFXI crew to FFXIV. They did such a good job on FFXI and I would love to see that level of quality in FFXIV. Yoshi P. did mention at FFXIV Fan Fest Las Vegas that the FFXIV crew is very small and that they were looking for potential employees.

SquareEnix...dont bury the game after last expansion, re-release it as standalone game please, even if it means single player.
Dont let FFXI go lost like many other older games have for many years now.

Pretty sure that when 1.0 was being developed, most of XI's team(s) were moved to it and have stayed mostly on the XIV team, to this day.

XI is already running on a skeleton crew, there's not much to take anymore.

I'm not saying I sat 24/7 for 2 weeks. I couldn't do anything but wait in valkrum since trying to solo outside just led to losing exp. I started I think on monk and struggled to 18, switched to war and sold gear (then felt dumb I didn't wait until 20 and chocobo), then gave up after putting in a few hours each day of afking without invites as war/mnk. I was looking forward to playing DRG cause I thought the wyvern was super cute.. But quickly realized that would never happen. I wasn't about to pay to afk when I could go have fun on another mmo for free..

FFXI is only cancelling CONSOLE SUPPORT, why is everyone thinking that it's being shut down fully when the PC is still being supported?

End of an Era really. Final Fantasy XI still holds my fondest memories in an FF MMO.

With the final major update set to launch in November it's pretty much over unless you want to stay and do the same content.

People aren't saying it's being shut down, they're discussing the fact that it's going into maintenance mode, which means no new content will be developed for it.

Not that it's going to shutdown but it's the first steps to closure. The reason people are saying this is because they have fully admitted that this is the last expansion they are releasing for XI that will tie all the expansion into one finale. Hearing that is a bit, well then moment cause there is a final final feeling to the fact they seem to no longer be supporting content for the game.

Abyssea was one of the best parts of ffxi for me ..ohhh yes. ^^

Been there right from the very start of the NA release,and continually subscribed ever since. So so many good times in there. ;)

Im certainly not surprised of the news though. Population wise it has been quite sparse for a long long time now, and its design/coding limitations to grow and develop over the years was lacking compared to what any modern mmo even starts out at. It was bound to happen.

I still have a lot to do in there since I never "lived" the game, and I'm glad I played this way now especially. I have lots to finish off and things I have not even dabbled in yet, so I will continue on my journeys for a long time yet.

Will be there till the final torch is blown out....

(here as well though, and in WOW.........errr Rift dimensions of course too) lol

Nothing is certain tho. The consoles are being dropped because one is no longer supported and the other ceases support in 2016. Even tho it looks like the game is going into maintinence mode with the dropping of the consoles it means nothing is holding back the game from redevelopment. Its also a numbered FF to boot so its unlikely it will ever shutdown or dissapear completely. Could see the possibility of either a solo player version of the game down the road sometime so the lore and stiry is never lost to those that never played or even a possible ARR style relaunch which would be really epic expecially since they pulled it off once before with 14.

Since I don't like XI, even after giving it a try twice, I'm not phased by the news at all.

Sad, I played FFXI back when PS2 version launched in NA.
I think I ended up clocking close to 1000 days of play time over 10 years.
I really enjoyed the game up until Adoulin, but then the vertical gear progression sort of ruined the game for me as it had been pretty much horizontal gear progression. Even with the level cap raise, old lvl75 gear were still useful.

I had good times with ffxi even met my irl husband through that game kinda sad that it's ending. But hey it had a good 15 years and I'm playing Ff xiv now which to me is more fun. So I guess I don't feel to bad.

I am sad over the news but it was not wholy unexpected. I invested countless hours over the last decade and a bit into that game... I still have it installed on my PS2 including the latest expansion (japanese version) I will probably partake in its sunsetting events and stories but with them passing a mobile version off to a (rather dubious imo) 3rd party I am doubtful I will take part in that. It was a big part of my life that let me meet friends who are still an important part of my life and was my first real social outlet being that I deal with some social disorders irl that I wont get into here so that game really ment a lot to me.

I stopped playing when the level cap was 75, might just need to go back and see what's new before they shut it down. One thing that game captured fantastically was the sense of adventure when going in new zones and trying not to die/get lost.

I don't get where the whole "shut it down" is coming from. Seems like itll be similiar to Gw1

I'm hopeful it'll still live on for years but yeah, it felt like the beginning of the end and I was little sad at first. I have a lot of great memories from that game.

im a little sad about it. i was realllllyyy hoping the news would be that the player sub would drop from 12$+$1 per retainer to about 9$ so I could play both :( really thats the only thing holding me back from going back at the moment and playing both. Especially since in 1.0 XIV I could have a lower XI sub for paying for this one :(

Hmm. I think Final Fantasy Grand Masters is interesting idea and I'll check it out when it's releases. I understand the reason to drop ps2 and 360 support along with the mobile tablet support. I guess this is better news than just shutting down the servers.

This is sad news. Like many others, I always figured I might go back one day and visit my beloved XI Elvaan. That was the game that introduced me to mmo's and a lot of the friends I've kept over the past decade. While it's still on pc, I'd not likely visit it again while it has a separate subscription.

I don't think some read that correctly. FFXI is no longer getting any major expansions after this one, not stopping content all together. If the game is still supported after it, likely they will make small episodes or battle content to take on. I doubt they release a mobile version if they didn't want to continue in some fashion with the game. For now, I see it as their last attempt to pull some people in. Dropping PS2/360 was one of the best things they could of done. Now with only PC/mobile limitations, they can do more to the game like putting in that UI they have been talking about for years and the limitations of the PS2 HDD is no longer a thing, so may not have to result to back tracking to previous content all the time.

Even though I do not play FFXI anymore, I hope the ideas they have brought up could bring some life into it. While a mobile online FF game may not sound appealing to veterans and dedicated PC gamers, but it does look appealing to the average person and can generate some numbers back. I do hope SE succeeds and puts the effort into squeezing a few more years out of it. FFXIV may be the thing now, but I hope FFXI can stand side by side with it for at least a few more years.

I remember one day I had completely off, I was a Whm in Valkurm, and I started early in the day, got into a group, we'd start on the highlands side and as we leveled up we'd work our way across, and whenever someone had to go, we always had a replacement waiting right behind them, and if we had do we'd just move back a few areas until they leveled up. Best typewriter analogy ever. I played for 8 hours straight because usually I'd sit there waiting ages for a party.

Oddly enough I'd buy the expansions, but I never got much farther than... erm, whatever that place is where you can get your earliest airship pass. I got there and found myself waiting ages for a group again and gave up.

I'm not putting FFXI down, in the end I just quit because it required a level of dedication I just can't give to a game. But you never saw me going onto the FFXI forums going "Ermagerd too hard make easier", I just found other games to play that suited my personal tastes better.
