I would agree it harder to make friends when everything is instanced, like if you look at XI that was very player dependent as if you didn't know other people you weren't going to get stuff done. There people I made friends with that I still talked to years after I left XI but XIV just doesn't seem like that. If I quit XIV there probably no one that I would still talk to, there no one I talk to outside the game as it is currently playing XIV. Cause I do believe there different levels of friends.
This is the first MMO I've ever seen without a general chat or tiered-level chat. I think that's the heart of the "community" issue in this game.
TBH work is pretty circumstantial too. At mine, I'm about the only 20s person in an IT department full of people in their 30, 40, 50s with few common interests/hobbies. I'm not the most social person but I did OK in university; haven't done well (socially) at work.
I don't know the OP's specific situation but at least they're trying.
I'm going to second this. I'm on Balmung, and I don't even ever RP. Very vibrant community, some awesome FCs, etc.
I'm on Coeurl, one of the smaller pop servers, but many people know each other, aside from a few who have marked themselves as "server trolls", the whole server itself seems pretty close knit. Small, not some heavy duty hardcore raiding die hard server for sure, but the community is willing to help out, and a whole lot of the folks around are on my friend list, if not in my FC itself. Even mine is about 130 people, but we are like a crazy family locked in an insane asylum most days.
But Kira, you're in my friends circle linkshell and we talk a lot in it every day and I invited you there personally because I consider you my friend... no one is treated badly or ignored there. You just gotta jump in and talk to us! Plus you know I offer training in T9 and FCoB you could always ask to jump into those with me and Xonius and others. The opportunity has always been here for you to get closer to us. I actually feel like you've distanced yourself from everyone after that certain incident with you-know-who... Just gotta open up more and be more actively willing to do stuff with us. I got at least 23 people good at T9 and cleared it without being carried so don't think you can't do it either! Running content together is really how we all make friends with each other :3
On an unrelated note: I feel that duty finder cross server boundaries does make it harder to make friends sorta... I started doing more party finder several months ago and actually found it pretty easy to make friends you just gotta sift through lots of drama seekers or people with bad attitudes but with enough dedication and socializing via party finder, you will make friends no problem. Being overly shy also isn't a good way to make friends I mean if you join party finder groups, say nothing for an hour then leave after it's finished... well yeah no one is going to notice you. That's just human nature. You gotta open up and be proactive in conversations. You won't always have things in common with everyone you meet but you will find at least a few, trust me!
KIRA!!!!!!!!!! Hi. You have friends...well you have a friend in me. I personally was giving you space after your "situation" and the FC disbanding, but I didn't know you felt as though you had no friends.. DUDE, I will help and do stuff with you anytime that I'm not already, or even just chat like we used to. BRO, don't feel that way...we got good people in the LS Waffles and you are ALWAYS more than welcome to talk bro. I'll try to stop being such a "stranger" since I have had a lot going on lately... I literally JUST made this forum account to respond to this lol... Any case, hope to see you in game again and HIT ME UP since I am likely on at any time and we can continue this conversation personally.... XD
Well if we're playing the blame game I blame the grind and having to run the same instance so many times that people just want to stay in the dungeon as little as possible. If we didn't have to run them so many times we wouldn't mind spending 10 minutes more inside, take things slow and chat. I've had a lot of pleasant, non silent runs back when I started and people weren't spamming low level dungones for the relic/cards.
OP, join a social linkshell and throw yourself at whatever people are talking about, something will stick. If you don't make the initial effort you'll never meet people, there are just too many to notice if you don't put yourself out there to be noticed. When I left my first FC I was pretty much alone, but I joined a couple of LS. Not all of them worked but I did meet some people I have been playing with for months now. Joining a static helps too, although that depends on what you wanna do in game.
I met my girlfriend playing this game, join a good FC and anything could happen.
That's so adorable.
To OP: Jamillion reminds me of something.
Back in Phase3/4 forums people had a realtionship forum and one couple met in FFXI and ACTUALLY met in rl, and one couple had like 3 kids and got married in rl one day.
Very sweet story. :o But yeah...take the first step to chat also!
I agree that RMT spams are a motivation in setting status to busy, but it's SE's downright crappy UI that makes people weigh the options and resort to that.
Even without RMT, you can't receive tells in duty, check friends list, check linkshells... You pretty much can't do ANYTHING social while in duty finder. I don't understand why such a limitation exists but the mindset I get from it is.. If I'm in duty, I already miss out on all the /tells and invites etc, so people have found ways to circumvent the problem (unfortunately, ls/fc chat is about the only way) and rarely even use /tells.
That's why people don't mind setting status to busy.
I don't even have whispered messages on my chat log since nobody I know would send me a /tell anyway. Or if they had to, they'll find another way to contact me etc.
UI in this game needs a rehaul badly.
Why can't I invite people to a linkshell because I'm kneeling down and crafting?
Why can't I accept a freaking party invite because I'm crafting?
So many stupid restrictions it's not even funny.
Also, the 1000 character limit on this forum... Come on, why's that necessary? We can already circumvent it with reposting... tsk tsk
We could just do away with linkshells and simply make free to open chat channels that people can join at will. With moderators of course. That way we can have a channel such as /hunts and use that as a consolidated source of hunt callouts instead of having to join 3-4 different hunting ls. I don't understand why SE is trying to save so much damn resource on chat.. Does it really put that much strain on their servers? I don't think so.
Want to make friends learn a new language. A whole new world will open up to you:)
