Oh, part of it was certainly sarcastic.

Actually, that's not quite true - in the original Dissidia each FF game from FFI through to X featured the main protagonist and antagonist from each, with only one character from FFXI and XII as secret characters (Shantotto from FFXI was on Cosmos's side, with Gabranth representing FFXII on Chaos's side). Dissida Duodecium on the other hand, shook things up a little, by adding extra characters, and it wasn't clear cut either. Some games got an extra character (FFIV, V, VII, VIII, X, XI, XII), and some games got an extra stage (II, III, VI, IX), and FFXI and XII also finally got proper stages. And poor old FFXIII, only gained one character (Lightning of course). So it remains to be seen if more characters besides Y'shtola will also be added in this third installment.
Is there actually any conclusive proof that this is truly an arcade game? It just seems a bit odd to me to make what would be a highly popular fanservice title an arcade game, especially in this day and age when arcades are struggling to remain relevant in a world where everything is online. I'm wondering if the idea that it's an 'arcade game' is actually a mistranslation of Dissidia's 'Arcade Mode' (which is a feature where the computer selects five opponents randomly with random stats and gear, each one getting progressively more difficult).
If this was the case, then it wouldn't be the first time that fan translations of early information in Japanese has proven to be at the very least, inaccurate, or at worst, completely wrong (remember how the player in FFXIV was supposedly meant to be called 'the hollow one' instead of the Warrior of Light for instance?). Of course, it's entirely possible that this is indeed an arcade game. But, until SE specifically states otherwise, I'm going to assume this is a case of mistranslation of an online article and that this is probably a console game. But I guess we'll find out soon enough.
Nothing will ever be as dumb as having Shantotto represent XI. At least they fixed it in 012 by adding Prishe too.
Well, technically, with 012 there was no game that got more than 1 new character (so XIII only getting one isn't that poor). It was worse when the original Dissidia only gave XI and XII 1 character.
If you include stages, XIII also got a stage.
Although I personally never cared about Shantotto (I certainly liked other Windurst characters more) and was pretty happy when Prishe was added, it's obvious that Shantotto is among the more popular FFXI characters when she got her own add-on.
They are still very popular in Japan as far as I know.Quote:

I definitely think Gaius will be playable as FFXIV's antagonist. There's no real doubt about it unless they decide to omit him for some reason. He definitely has the moveset for it, between his gunblade to X-shaped air slashes to the use of persistent Blue Fire AoEs, etc. Best of all, they wouldn't even have to update his model all that much.
I mean, Gaius already has a look for EX Mode in his respective game that isn't an eldritch horror (coughExdeathcough) (when his armor turns gold, maybe incorporating some of the Ultima Weapon into his gear design), and his EX Burst "Black Wolf", which he borrows power from Ifrit, Titan, and Garuda, respectively (with timed presses as normal), then finishes with an Ultima blast.
But besides that, I do hope this makes it to PS4. Oh my god, do I hope this comes to PS4. Maybe even allow for reading Dissidia/012 Save Data for special unlocks and bonuses?
Also, for those who don't know what Dissidia is, here's a couple videos of gameplay:
Cloud (VII) vs Sephiroth (VII): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hAjuaWJpKPs
Shantotto (XI) vs. Feral Chaos (Final Boss, Dissidia's Story Mode): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UwRnZ_dUn48
Bartz (V) vs. Gilgamesh (V): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_abe6bex-_E
No Rowena? Shes probably the most amazing side-character in the whole game!
they probably wanted a scion b/c they spend the most time telling you what to do aaand when we look at scions
y'da and papalymo were probably out because of prishe/shantootles.
Thancred kind of bumbles for 50 levels and has an ill defined fighting style up till late in the storyline.
generic hyur from the trailers is supposed to be a stand in for -you- and while they could do a neat thing with a character that switches classes with him this is kind of bartz's gimmick already. If they were going to go with this htey probably would have done that for XI
Y'shtola is kind of a robot but she....kind of fits i guess..idk..there's better -probably- better choices.
now they do tend to pick a hero and a villain from each game so lets hope gaius is there because that would be SICK
Should have been Hildebrand...
It should have been Godbert!! because God :U!!!
well, Y'shtola can Wack some sence on the Warrior of Light there too...
First point: From what I understand, FFXII was still late in development when the first Dissidia hit, so they didn't have time to add heroes. FFXII heroes also kinda suffered from a "genericness" factor due to the way leveling worked. It does have the reputation for the most bland protagonist in the entire series, after all.
FFXI has a similar issue, except that most of the villains aren't really all that iconic to the game itself, and due to expansions there's always a new set of villains. XIV was able to sidestep this issue and many others by building a core ensemble cast from the beginning and having the two major (non-beast tribe) villain factions actually look like huge insurmountable threats at the time. The fact that there actually IS debate as to who should get into the game says a lot about how many different characters there are of significance to the story.
Shantotto was a natural choice for XI's representative since she's there from the beginning AND has a content update built around her. Plus she's got a gimmick that translates well to crossovers.
Second point: The trailer has the word "Arcade" pop up in pretty much every single one of the on-screen plugs.
As for why an arcade, well, Arcade games are still very popular and profitable in Japan. Arcade fighting games are actually very similar to those old Neo Geo games: One arcade unit can have half a dozen or more games on it for players to choose from. Thus, they're basically designed for a console that costs about ¥100 a try, has a high chance of the player losing and trying again, doesn't have the extra feature requirements of console games, and doesn't have as many arcade units and thus they don't have to spend as much money producing units for the arcades.
It was a mentality America never really grasped, instead insisting on a one-game-per-box mentality for every game except neo geo ones.
And you'll note that the arcades that ARE still around usually consist of at least one neo geo machine :P
He'd be too overpowered
This is one bad choice.
Why? ONLY because she's a WHM and they only have 3 skills. Original as it may be it's just we lack skills in this game for her
to be Dissidia tier.
As seen on video, she used Aero and Holy and barely had any screen time expect getting wrecked.
The Limit Break ... I don't even know what they'll do.
There are no good representatives in this game otherwise.
Yda and Papalymo are Tifa and Terra in the game.
Can't add Uriagner - Yuna?
Minifilia - I have no idea what her job is...I guess boobs.
Thancred - They said he was a bard...with a paladin knife, with NIN like reflexes so I dunno. He's generic.
Edit: She casts Blizzard and Fluid Aura too. I never saw her as a mascot of this game either.
Other options would give us a small character customization of the adventurers since we're the main shabang here.
Y'shtola is rather boring but so are most of the good guys in FF14. The scions in particular are just incredibly dull. The gc leaders are decent I guess.. Actually I do agree Godbert would have been awesome. I guess maybe that was a bit too stupid and silly for the ff14 rep, but I'd have enjoyed that a lot more than Y'shtola.
In the video she uses at least one instance of an ice attack that resembles Blizzard III. She'll probably be pulling skills from all 3 DoMs.
Plus unlike a lot of the other character's in XIV, she actually has a flashy signature attack (well, defense, but i can be used offensively). The only other characters with signature attacks that aren't villains are from the hildibrand storyline.
In the video we see her use Blizzard III, in game her signature is a variation of sacred soil+Protect (that she apparently learned from Louisoix), and she's used CNJ abilities on more than one occasion.
Conjurer's only having a limited number of attack spells is a non-issue. There's no rule that she can only use abilities that are in FFXIV, otherwise, a lot of Dissidia characters would be pretty much screwed.
Y'shtola is cool, but I'm really looking forward to using an ADS summonstone so I can High Voltage the shit out of my opponent's bravery.
I must've missed this then because she has not done anything that I remember that was any thing special.
Feels like she had more of a role in 1.0 because here....the Scion's are very boring, sepct' Papalymo and Yda...Boobillia is the worst.
I never played 1.0 so I wouldn't know much of anything that was done there.
Edit: Page 3 - Felis post: I don't remember her using Succor...hmm...cool lol.
I dunno, she just doesn't feel like she fits in the game.
I agree with Hilderbrand for the lulz.
All the Scions would have been the best (non-comic relief, to which: they added Bartz and ExDeath before Gilgamesh) option. Not as separate characters mind, as a tag-team style character thing. Can't actually recall Dissidea doing that, Onion Kid could switch Jobs I think?
Gaius as the villain would then work exceptionally well as we'd be able to recreate this. 1.0s Gaius >>>>>>>>>>>>>> that utter moron we got in Praetorium...
Y'shtola seems to be the official FFXIV mascot (she's listed as No.054 (Super Rare) in a Lord of Vermillion II artbook, and as far as I know, no other character from FFXIV is there, while IV has at least Kain, Rydia and Edge, for example). Probably because she's a Miqo'te (Tarutaru seems to have been FFXI's mascot race, making Lalas too similar, meanwhile Miqo'te are all over the XIV crossovers/promos) and a scion.
It would be nice if they could also include Gaius AND Lahabrea/- er, wait-Spoilerguy, yes, Spoilerguy (if you played all of 2.0 storyline you know who). And have the latter genuinely be on both sides. With Gaius and Y'shtola being fixed.
I wonder if they'll have a Y'shtola centric story in the future to make her pop out more for non-Limsa Lominsans.
Yeah, what even is Y'shtolla? She carries a WHM wand yet uses SCH barriers?
I love Dissidia. Just hope that this does eventually get a console port, because arcades are all but dead outside of Japan. There are a lot of people who would love to play this and will ultimately be disappointed if SE doesn't port the game eventually.
I think I remember seeing Kan E Senna use a large barrier (probably protect)somewhat similar to Y'shtola's. Otherwise she's probably an advanced CNJ
fireworks u mean? :P

I'm surprised no one remembers that one moment in 2.2 where Y'shtola pretty much tells Merlwyb to get her 'act' together (she also shows impatience during the Titan quest). Y'shtola is also capable of casually stopping the blade of an axe with the palm of her hand (in 1.0).
She's still a far better choice than Hildibrand, though. While yes, he has more 'character', he is incapable of fighting. His mum and dad are better fighters, but even then they'd still be a terrible choice (personally, I find it would be a bad idea to make characters used only for comedy/anime purposes to represent a game that has a serious plot).
Looks like she knows Blizzard III, Aero II and Holy. From the looks of it, she will be a burst AOE style mage considering there is 3v3 battles.
And bullets as well, as shown in the fight with Gaius. She is basically Neo, only prettier, smarterm and better at magic.
As for the villain, if we get one, I vote for Darnus. G-man may have been cool in 1.0, but Nael has the most memorable boss battle in the game (both games), is the most impactfull person in Eorzean history since Emperor Xande(go on, name a single zone, dungeon or questline that wasn't affected by the calamity) and could shrug off the effects of getting tempered by a primal the size of Limsa Lominsa.
Honestly, if it wasn't for events in Coil, I'd say that Louisoix would be the ideal candidate for representative. But as the situation stands... >_>
Ah, thanks for that then. Still, as someone else mentioned earlier, it's highly likely, if not guaranteed, this will eventually find it's way to a console/handheld - the last time SE had an arcade fighter (Erhgeiz), it got a console release a year or two later.
Anyway, thanks for the clarification. :)
As for other alternative characters instead of Y'shtola to represent FFXIV, as much as I would love to see Gaius or Nael on Chaos's side, neither qualify sadly, simply because there is already an equivalent character in Dissidia with their appearance and temperament (Gabranth from FFXII). Nael especially looks almost the same as Gabranth, and given the fact that Tetsuya Nomura stated ages ago during the original Dissidia's development that they wanted to have each character unique with their own unique style of fighting, appearance and abilities (this is why Vivi from FFIX never appeared in it either, despite constant fan requests for him to be in a Dissidia title - they already had a BLM (Shantotto), which would just make Nael and Gaius surplus.
Hildibrand wouldn't work either - simply because he is not a fighter (the player was the one who had to always do the fighting for him). And besides, Dissidia already has Gilgamesh as a 'comic relief' character, so again he'd just be superfluous. Like it or not, as much as I would still like to see Derplander given a name and appear as FFXIV's representative, I really think Y'shtola is probably the best choice to represent FFXIV in the Dissidia universe. :)
First, she is a CNJ
Second, it is not a Scholar skill. She used it already before Scholar skills were in the heads of the developers. It is her personal special skill, that create a zone around her (no ground target AoE) that nothing can enter (no dmg get reduced).

Ya it is a type of magnetic field ability unique to Y'shtola only which can serve to deflect bullets, fire balls, or any type of objects and spells.
1.0 even showed the skill off when she is in combat even though it was only a few times. She can even reduce the size of the magnetic field to allow her to deflect attacks with her hands.

I really hope they port this to all consoles... or PC... or add it in to the golden saucer as a mini-game... SOMETHING OTHER THAN ARCADE!
I can see why they picked Y'shtola. She is one of the characters from the main story, and she is unique in that she is a Miqo'te. Basically, she's a beautiful, cool, magical catgirl, which makes her a total shoo-in. xD
Personally, she's not one of my favorites though . . . I find Yda to be more fun and charming. But Yda is a plain ol' Hyur, and for full effect she needs her trusty Lalafellin partner, Papalymo, so I can see why they picked Y'shtola.
Having given it some thought...I'm not too surprised they picked Y'shtola in favor of the other characters (Theatrhythm notwithstanding) given what's already been done in Dissidia. I'd have loved to see Derplander in there, but utilizing multiple jobs may seem too similar to Vaan, and the memory required would probably be ridiculous for all those AF sets. Wonder what her EX Burst will be though.
I can definitely see either Gaius or Nael taking the side of Chaos, though - both have several moves that they can use, and both have EX Mode/Burst setups already (Nael's SCoB form, Gaius's Praetorium gold armor + Ultima Weapon).
She needs new attires. why do all the scions wear 1.0 gears except for Minfilia?
