...850k was said to surely not be enough to purchase a house. In pretty much the same breath as it's-going-to-be-much-cheaper-than-FC-housing was, though.

But yeah, it's only natural to expect things, especially when we are being given hints; the wrong thing here was the fact that they most probably knew this was how they would go on about it - when it's already given and implemented, they really should have just said so. Sure, fighting FCs and the prices and the inadequate number of plots would still have been valid things to argue, but at least we wouldn't feel mislead.

I know they said it wouldn't be enough, but that is still an ambiguous statement that gives us no real idea on what Personal Housing would have been. I mean, we have the same system we got in 2.1 for pricing, yet they only talked about 850k as not being enough, not "It'll nearly be enough for a small plot on some servers", which gives a much clearer idea of what's going to happen - multiple plots, server based pricing again. Clarifying it like that would have instantly set alarm bells off for some of us, since it becomes fairly obvious that it'll be Ward based and, given the current issues with Wards, quantity of plots could be an issue. Still wouldn't think it'd be exactly the same as Free Company Housing though.

Going "You'll need more than 850k" gives no real indication of what we're getting, if you take it as 851k+ to buy a house, then you can reasonably assume it'll be something similar to Private Rooms, since there is only one cost floating about. Assumptions like that were only further fueled when they said there might be some issues with Personal Housing getting Gardening, I don't know how that had worries about Gardening not being possible for Personal Housing right away, but that comment instantly made me thing "They're doing something different for Personal Housing".

No. Myself, and others, saw the ambiguity of this statement and asked, repeatably, for clarification. No such clarification was ever given.

I always assumed the worst (though somehow the reality trumps that), but that doesn't mean I'm blind to other possibilities or trains of thought. Plenty of us asked for clarification on personal housing, because SE had given us next to zero tangible information, and SE responded with silence. People may be at fault for making assumptions, but SE is at fault for not providing any information or clarity, more so when whole threads were devoted to requests for such.

To say people are at fault for having expectations of content, when the developers have not only given no information on it for a very long time, but even gone back on that information, is ludicrous. A lack of communication is at fault here; we have been asking, they're the ones who haven't been talking.

The situation was more like;

OK, if that actually happened I'd assume I'm not invited; but personal housing was on a time table, we knew it was coming. What we didn't know was everything else, because the developers chose silence over clarity.

Hells, they delayed personal housing, several times if I remember correctly... Why was it delayed is a question I'm still asking, considering what we got could have been in 2.15; delays usually happen because something took longer than they thought, implying they were actually working on something, which plainly wasn't the case.

Again, we asked these questions, and they decided not to respond. They had plenty of time to clear up any misunderstandings, but decided to let the update hit first; fault lies squarely on their shoulders. Christ, the days before the update we were even wondering if personal housing had even made it into 2.38; it had been delayed before, which only lead people to believe they were working on something... Instead we get not clarification and something which could easily have been in 2.15...

Blame people for having expectations if you like, but it's the developers silence that lead to people having groundless expectations in the first place. We had literally nothing to ground our expectations on because they chose not to provide updates on what they were doing with personal housing.

That may be the case but most servers still had available plots before the patch, including the smallest plots available. So there was plenty of time to get priorities straightened out before this happened.
