PSN is down

Booo been up all night from a 6.0 earth quake in CA and now i wanna relax and can't :P

And then yet there is suppose to be a maintenance tomorrow. I know it's not my cable provider because I was able to get on the internet from the PS4

i was awake for the earthquake too, oakland!

I just saw your message Mogi. How are you doing since the earthquake ? Heart goes out to all to in Calf. that had to deal with the quake.

Combatting a DDoS attack is effectively futile. The things which you can do on the receiving end are filter out illegal protocolos or packets, however most common DDoS attacks use legit protocols and packets (packets regular clients would also send over the regular protocol). So the second thing you can do on the receiving end is open up more bandwidth. But this can easily be countered by increasing the number of systems performing the DDoS attack. And additionally, bandwidth is finite.

So commonly the countermeasures have to rely on getting the sending end to stop. The source has to be traced, and e.g. the ISP has to be contacted to stop sending. With attacks such as these usually coming from botnets with infected systems spread out all across the globe, it's an uphill battle.

The receiving server is a postal box. In front of the postal box you have a person standing who's stuffing the postal box with empty sheets of paper. The postal box is filled up. A legit sender tries to enter their letter, but the box is full. Even after the postal box gets emptied, the person still keeps stuffing it with empty pages.

In a DDoS attack the situation is very much alike. Servers are flooded with meaningless requests. As the servers process this data, actual data doesn't get the opportunity to reach the server and get processed timely.

Oh I understand. So I guess the only way to stop these attacks is presumably suspend the accounts of those who are deliberately doing it?

Else the only thing you can do is play the waiting game. You can blame Sony all you want, but there is actually very little they could do to prevent these things from happening from time to time. It's their job to provide a service and they have to deal with attacks swiftly and with minimal customer annoyances - that's true… but it always depends on the scale of the attacks and the possible options they have to move against them. More security might also result in more inconveniences for customers when no attack is going on. It's complex and that makes it hard to put blame on anyone besides the initiators.

Not all of us are doing this either. I hope they compensate us for this.

After working my back side off the last 3 weeks pulling 6 day weeks I was looking forward to 3 days of doing nothing but leveling my smn and a bit of raiding. Really hope they catch these guys.

If they shut it down because of the attacks. And they claimed they fixed it and they didn't . We are getting this information second handed.

Ok I finally talked with them and they did say there is problem with the network. They don't have a time frame on t. They didn't say anything else.

Think I have to thank my kitten for waking me up early in the morning, managed to get online before the ddos happened so I can still play at least :/

On the east coast in US and still can't log in. :/

So I managed to log on about an hour ago. I spammed the log in until it let me in.

I was able to log in to my PS4 account, but when I try to get on FFXIV I still get the error "NP-36147-1" :mad:.

Seems the PSN store is still under maintenance.

I managed to get on FFXIV on ps4. Anyone else able to play now?

EU here. BF has managed to log in and play on the PS3 with full functionality but as of typing this PS4 connectivity hasn't been restored for me anyway.

I think there's a cure for people like that.

no-go for me still, it's shitty. I logged off for about 15 mins to watch something, and came back to this, ps4 here. Tells me PSN is undergoing maintenance.

Still down. I get an error message saying can't connect to the server and then if I hit log in again, it tries loading and stays there - I won't even get the error that says can't connect to the server in time. Been trying for hours now.

Just got in and my buddy list is up as well^^ so at least for me psn is up

just keep trying if your lucky , you might get through.

Still not letting me on. Even tried to download the pc client but it's taking ages.
