Well wtf is deeps? Is it dps? If so that's just as atrocious/cancerous/disemboweling/mashpotatos/toxic/vomit-inducing as the people who type ohemgee instead of omg.

The point is that the game itself calls that class role "DPS", not "DD".
----
I understand where "lot" comes from, but most times I've seen it being used referring to "loot" instead of "casting lots".
(example, "he got got all the lot" or "no lot dropped for me")
EDIT: not saying every single person misuses it, just that it's widely misused.
Funny enough I'm more used to "aggro" than "hate" when it comes to threat/enmity.
This thread reminds me of people arguing between WTS and S> and all other similar terms.
Aggro isn't the correct term, it's one of the acceptable terms. One of the nice things about language is its flexible, and as long as the word is understood, the one used for the most part doesn't matter.
Hate, Enmity and Aggro are all acceptable terms.
Being fickle or persnickety over terms is a bit silly. "BUT I USE THIS TERM! YOU MUST ALL BE WRONG!"

One of the many things 1.0's developers tried to do to separate it from the rest of the MMO genre.
Which in the overall picture looked good on paper, but the execution and implementation was terrible.
If you ever played 1.23 and started off in Limsa Lominsa, you'd have found that it was borderline unreadable, they were almost obsessed on attention to detail, even in the story-line which had to be as realistic to their pre-renaissance fantasy world as possible. So the words, quest-text, gear, area design were all very strict, which is one of the reasons they used words like 'enmity'.
Don't know what part of "'Murica" you live in, but here in the northeast if you order Fish and Chips you get fries the same as Europe. I have honestly never seen a place that gives you chips when you order "Fish and Chips".
Even one of the biggest seafood chains in the Northeast (prior to filing bankruptcy) was called "Arthur Treacher's Fish and Chips" and there were only fries on their menu.

So no in 'Murica its not necessarily a different thing.
In my book:
Loot is the items that come from a mob
Lot is the process of obtaining the mob (Lotting, Lot, free lot ect)
DD is a person who does dmg
DPS is how much damage that person does per second
Character: you in game character
Toon: Google loony toons
Then again people interchange the words in the genre. If you came to XIV from XI it will be characters, Lot, and DD.... if you came from WoW/Other mainstream mmo it will be toon, Loot, and dps.
I personally still find it is funny people say "looking for 3 damage per second and good to go" instead of "looking for 3 Damage Dealers and good to go". >.> Or when I tried wow at the start how I got very pissed when someone called my character a toon.
In XI it ment Damage Dealer. Anything that had a primary purpose of killing the mob was considered a DD.
In XI:
Spike Dmg: Large Damage Burst but not sustainable over time (Drk, Drg, Blm, Rng, Sam)... on a graph these players would cause large spikes in dmg sometimes 2-3times higher then the sustained dmg. Aka like a sustained dps of 100 but they can spike it to say 300-400 for 20 secs every 3-4mins.
DoT (Damage Over Time): Mnk, Duel Wield War, Pup... on a graph it would be almost flatline with constant dmg. Aka say a constant 150dps that varies little.
Yea when folks say lot they aren't trying to cleverly shorten the word loot. It's like everyone says it means to roll, or need, or greed or whatever on the actual loot, casting lots.
Welcome to Final Fantasy, we raise not rez, we lot on loot, DPS are DD, and toons are characters.
What's with all the dumbarse threads? If you don't know what the word lot means, buy a dictionary. No need to make a thread about it.
Since you ignored the previous posts, DPS is the term officially adopted for FFXIV, it's not just people randomly picking terms (like lotting).
You're looking for class roles, a "DPS class" is a class role and the NA localization team chose to use that term. With this I'm not saying that DD is incorrect, but it's not any more correct than DPS and it's probably more used than DD in most MMOs.
I'm wondering if there's any other game (other than XI) where people use "casting lots".
SE disagrees with you XD
Since when did you que for a DD role in DF? it's listed as DPS. and wheres the DD subforum, tis called DPS roles :)
Tanks hit things to generate enmity, so they can be called Damage dealers too, as they deal damage to generate enmity ^_^
It's just like those who call Miqot'e Mithra, lalafells Taru etc.
An a slightly similar note, can everyone, and I do literally mean everyone, please stop shortening 'potions' to 'pots'. Please understand.
I always thought of aggro being the moment when the monster notices you running about and decides to attack you, and hate being the hate list, where the tank (hopefully) has top hate. /shrug
But then again I've always hated people being too upset over grammar or spelling.. If you understand what the person means, why would it matter? Reminds me of a Youtube video from danisnotonfire where he was explaining that if he figured out the mathematical formual for curing cancer and revealed it on the internet, everyone would just be like "LOL U SAID FORMUAL."
You lot a lot to get loot. Or not?
Like most MMOs, this game is...
/sunglasses
..rolling in the deeps.
